Covet Drabble

There wasn’t much Ferris truly wanted. No, what she really wanted was to be back home. But that’s not possible, right? Not even with the box sitting in front of her. She did wonder what was in it, what could possibly require the box to be so long and thin.

Ferris unwrapped it and pulled off the lid to it, taking a moment to realize what it was. It was a sword, that was immediately obvious, but only after a couple seconds did Ferris realize that it was her sword. The one Crusch had entrusted to her as her knight. Ferris has been without it before and again now for a while, and she missed it.

She took it out of the box, holding it in her hand. She was never fond of using a sword. But this was hers. Given to her by her Crusch. It had special meaning to her, and she was glad to have it back, even if may only be a temporary reminder of home.

The world he lived in, was quite different. Isolated villages and long stretches of woods in between them. It was a good way to get lost, to never be found when the beasts cast themselves upon a found victim. It’s impact is an unsettling one, that makes him far more nervous than he previously thought he could be. 

“I had a servant, though, he was more hinderance than help at times.” The imp oftentimes, needed help when things got out of hand. 

“That may, be of some help.” 

“Even a hindrance can be helpful. After all, anyone you knyow would be better than nyo one at all, isn’t that right?”

Ferris wouldn’t expect Sesshomaru to keep a servant around that they didn’t trust. At least a little bit. Ferris had no real idea what Rin was like, or what she’d already been through, but she imagined that at her young age it would do a lot of good just to have someone around. If only Ferris were so lucky in her own youth.

“Regardless, I’ve been here once before. While definitely annoying, when I got back home, it was like I was never even gone. And Crusch-sama would nyever lie to me about that.”

He remembers the wolves, the thugs, how she seems scared of those things despite his protection. The poor girl. While powerful, while tough, he does worry. “She is unaccustomed to being without this one.” Jaken might not be enough, that’s a very real possibility. But, he keeps his mouth shut. At least Naraku is gone, gone and dead. 

Rin should not face the world alone again.

“There are strange, powerful things in those woods. It should not be her duty to fight them alone.”  

It occurred to Ferris now that the world this person comes from might not be as built up as his own. In Lugnica, at least, as long as you stayed to designated roads and towns, you would be more or less completely fine.

“Did you travel alone, before you found her? Surely there is someone that is back home with her, nyo?”

“At the very least, you can take maybe some comfort in knyowing that time seems to move much slower back home than it does here.”

Sesshomaru’s quick to pull a face, actively grimacing at the other’s remarks. He’s not thrilled about it, far from it. The idea that this place works against those within it, it’s a horrifying thing. “Vile.” That’s all he offers on the matter, expression falling back to its neutral state. 

“Her name is Rin, and she is, eleven years old– human. She has been with this one for three years now. An orphan.” That much, he says carefully, as if giving out the wrong information could be costly. It’s likely not, but he’s just not sure, just not certain that everything will be alright.

Ferris nodded along as he was told about Rin, his mouth curling down into a frown for once, rather than his usual neutral or smiling expression. “Eleven years old, huh...at least that’s of an age where she’s capable of doing things on her own.”

Not an ideal scenario, but old enough where it wouldn’t be a death sentence for a child.

“Nyou look like a capable person. It would nyot surprise me if you had taught her well enough to be able to take care of herself in your absence.”

Felix had never wielded a weapon like this wand of his–if you could even call it a proper weapon. All it did was fire a stream of water-coloured energy and bubbles which, while enough to hurt the shadowy creatures of hate that the city was filled with, would do nothing but make someone feel cheery and bubbly themselves if they were hit.

Hardly the damage one might want from a magic wand. But then again, Felix was a healer. He was perfectly content with the near useless in all but niche scenarios wand. However, it was still somewhat hard to control. For example, he’d just fired off a magic beam towards one of the aforementioned shadow creatures.

But, he’d forgotten that his beam was not instant, and by the time it reached where the creature once stood, it was already taken out. By the person standing on the other side of it, who was now in the direct path of Felix’s incoming beam.

“You look so cute!” The young hero couldn’t help but exclaim as she came across the other with cat ears and a cute dress. Her sense of style was too adorable to ignore. Not to mention how the cat ears seem to fit her perfectly. Their was a small urge in wanting to pet them for a while, but it would be rude if she were to do so to a stranger all of a sudden. Though exclaiming out of no where how cute someone appeared was probably strange in its own way.

“I apologize. I couldn’t help myself, I don’t remember seeing someone like you around and I couldn’t help myself. I hope that did not leave an odd impression of me… I am much more capable then what you see.”

If there was one really big upside to this place, it’s that he was fawned over a lot more here than he’d ever expect back in Lugnica. The closest he could expect would be Subaru– well, at first anyway.

“I happen to think that’s a very good first impression. If someone can think Ferris is cute, it tells me very good things about you.” A short, kitten-like ehehe escaped him as he flicked his ears and twirled his tail to make himself look even cuter. “I would nyever think someone odd for something like that.”

   Was that… a cat?

   No, they weren’t exactly a cat… they were more like a human cat! The auburn looked with curiosity at them. The more she stayed in this city, the more she saw more different things. She was used to weird things because of what happened in her world, but definitely there were more of them here, and none of them were something she saw sometime.

   “Hello!” They were greeted. “Are those real cat ears?! And a real cat tail?!” She paused for a moment. Hamuko thought she might be disturbing or they would think something bad because of what she asked. “Oh, I’m sorry! I’m not judging you or anything! Besides, I guess it’s not the first time someone asks you this, am I right?”

“Yes, they’re quite real.” Felix replied. To prove it, he even wiggled his ears a bit, and wrapped his tail around his legs and then straightened it back out behind him again. He got up close to the other, “Very cute, right?”

“I don’t think anyone has judged me for them yet here,” but they certainly did back home, before they knew who he was. His tail brushed up against the others side a moment. “and you’re certainly nyot the first to ask. But the positive attention is always nice!”

“Oh, wow! I don’t think I’ve ever seen that country on a map.” That didn’t mean much, though. Arendelle seemed quite behind compared to this city. She noticed his demeanor and smiled as she remembered the way the guards used to swear their loyalty to her father when he was the king. 

“Hm. That’s too bad. Well, if you won’t serve me, I hardly need it. I’m training to protect myself. It’s why I wanted the sword.” 

“That comes as nyo surprise to me. If your world is anything like this one, I’m sure there’s slim chance of Lugnica existing there.” He came from a world of fantasy, and this world was filled with such vastly superior technology, and everyone around seemed so used to it, that he just assumed that’s how most other worlds were, too.

“Are you royalty, or royalty-to-be, maybe?” he asked. That’s the only reason he could think someone might serve her. “Sword skills are invaluable to have, but it is nyawfully hard to teach yourself.”

“HAAAAAAAH!” Lip’s voice rang out as she pointed the palm of one of her claws into the air, a beam of light shooting forth and cleaving a beast that had been about to get the drop on a cat-eared girl. “A-Are you okay…?”

Fluffy ears twitched and then were pressed flat against Ferris’ head, blocking out the sudden noise. Ferris turned in time to see the remains of one of the shadow beasts wither and fade, and the one who’d killed it standing behind it.

“I’m quite alright, which I suppose is thanks to you. I didn’t knyow these things could move so quietly when they wanted to.”

   The hatchling, unheeding of its mother’s calls took flight suddenly. Leather spanned wings carrying his scaly body to soar in circles just above a nearby stranger’s crown, puffs of grey smoke bursting from a tiny maw.

   ❛ My dragon appears to have taken shine to you, please, come closer. ❜

The dragon was actually somewhat of a welcome sight to Felix, reminding him of the land dragons back home. Though this one didn’t look exactly the same, and it was much smaller than even baby land dragons tended to be, Felix found it cute. The smoke puffs hitting his ears made them twitch. He did as he asked, walking closer to who he assumed to be the dragon’s owner.

“Your little dragon is cute! Where did nyou get them? Are they from here?”

“It’s certainly not a familiar one.”  Sesshomaru offers that much through a set jaw, words tight.

There’s a cruelty in this place, one he has no way of appreciating. Frankly (and he’s quite frank about the matter), Sesshomaru despises it. Rin was tough, but still, human. “It’s an unusual, cursed place, that much is certain. Why though, this one cannot say for certain.”

Ferris shook his head, briefly closing his eyes to imagine his home world on the backs of his eyelids. “Worse than that, it actively tries to be as unfamiliar as possible...”

Though he’d learned a lot since coming here, so much still was entirely foreign to him. He longed for the comfort of the Karsten Manor again.. and for the comforting presence of Crusch Karsten herself. “We both miss someone. Your daughter, what is she like?”

Some of the little shadowy creatures packed quite a bit more of a punch than Felix expected. None of them had hurt him too bad, but he’s earned his fair share of bruises.

He spotted someone having just taken out one of the larger ones, too (and he would’ve helped, had he noticed sooner. Next time.) and they looked a bit worn out. If they were hurt, Felix could help them... to a degree, but it would still be better than nothing. He was a healer; he had to at least go up and ask.

“Excyuse me, are you alright? Any injuries anywhere?”

“I have a daughter,” Sesshomaru speaks abruptly, though, his voice is most definitely not a snap. It’s an explanation at the least, careful in its execution. Briefly, he wishes he had one of those things that Kagome had once described, photograph. Memory will have to do.

“It seems inappropriate to accuse this one of being completely apathetic to the world, hm?”

“Maybe nyot apathetic to every world, but just this one, would you say?”

“This place is very good at making that happen.” Ferris had someone they cared about, too. Not a daughter, but still family in his eyes. Though he was doing fine in this city, he was only pushing forward because he wouldn’t want to let Crusch down. He still felt lost without any possibility of seeing her.

She was usually quite nervous when receiving compliments that weren’t just formalities from other royals, but this time she was just amused.

“Why, thank you.” She took it and slid the sword inside. “So, I must ask… if you’re a knight, who do you serve?” 

“I serve my one and only Crusch-sama, vying for her spot as the forty-second King of Lugnica!” There was a lot of pride in his voice now, his demeanor cheering up noticeably at the chance to talk about Crusch. “And I would serve nyo other, even if my Crusch-sama isn’t here with me.”
