hi! I hope you’re doing well :’) I’ve had this question for ages and it’s embarrassing but you seem like a good person to ask this to!!

what exactly is self-shipping? I’m autistic and I’m struggling to wrap my head around it bc it doesn’t seem to have a clear definition or rules.

Like I have multiple fictional characters I really love and feel attached to and write self inserts with- is that self-shipping?

To be clear I’m not judging at all, I think I fit this group but I want to understand it better! Do you like imagine being with them, or is it more than that? I’m sure it varies too, I’m just curious for your take.

at its basics self shipping just means shipping yourself or some sort of oc that is a stand in for yourself with a fictional character (or sometimes a celebrity or something too)

youre right theres not really any set rules to self shipping, some people take it very seriously and see their f/o’s as their real partners, some people just do it for fun because they think the character is neat. you could consider what youre doing self shipping if you want to but there are plenty of people who dont. self shipping is a relatively new (ish) term so lots of people have been created self inserts for characters and series for ever and never really put a name to it so its up to you!

for us personally its a mix of just liking characters and imagining us with them (+plus making art and writing about us) but we do take it a bit more seriously than just for fun self shipping, its complicated to explain.

id say its up to the individual if they want to consider it self shipping or something else (or nothing at all) and can also boil down to if you wanna interact with the self shipping community online at all too!

it'z fun to have basically a little world we're both in!! even when a lot of eventz are randomized,, in my impatience, i actually refreshed a bunch until my character was 'thinking about love' and we got together ^_^ i know everything about them yet i alwayz want to know more. it is a nice feeling

thats so cute! i love making your f/o’s in character creators or games and stuff like that! especially when you can make your f/o and s/i fall in love and interact! i think everyone should do it at least once so they can live out self ship fantasies

sometimes i do feel a little less than for self shipping with so many characters. like “clearly im not really in love with any of my f/o’s because theres just so many of them.” i do sometimes wish i could just pick one and be devoted to them and only them, then maybe id truly love them right. but i dont know theres so much of me to go around so why wouldn’t i have so much love to give so many f/o’s too. just because i love all of them doesnt mean i dont truly love them ans it doesn’t mean that people who only love them somehow love my f/o in a “better” or “right” way that i dont.
