There are many paranormal games which have been explained by one person or another. Take the Charlie Charlie Challenge for example. If you’ve been living under a rock for the past few years and are unfamiliar with this ritual, you take a piece of paper and two pencils and set them up like this-
-and say, “Charlie Charlie, can we play?” The pencil that’s on top of the other will move, pointing to either “yes” or “no”. You ask questions, and “Charlie” will answer them. When you finish, you have to say “Charlie Charlie, can we stop?” If it says “yes”, you can pick up the pencil and drop it on the floor to break contact with the spirit. If it says “no”, you have to keep asking questions and try to break contact later.
The explanation for this is very simple and has been figured out by almost everyone. The pencil is balanced on top of the other in such an awkward and delicate way that if the surface they’re on is even slightly tilted, it will cause the pencil to turn. The smallest movement- even a breath- would make the pencil move because of the awkward placement.
Another game I’d like to address is the Midnight Game. If you want to know how it works, click the link here. If the link doesn’t work, here’s the rundown: the beginning of the Midnight Game is done in front of a wooden door. You have to shut off all the lights in your home, write your full name on a piece of paper, and prick your finger to squeeze a drop of blood onto the paper. You light a candle and place it on top of the paper. You have to knock on the door 22 times, with the final knock occurring at midnight. You have to open the door, blow out the candle, close the door, and relight the candle. This invites an entity called “The Midnight Man” into your home. You then have to pick up your candle and start to move around your home. If your candle goes out, you have to relight it immediately, and if you fail to relight it, you have to surround yourself with a circle of salt and wait there until 3:33 a.m. If you still have your candle, you can’t stop moving around your house until that time. If you see a shadowy figure in your home, that’s the Midnight Man. You must avoid him at all costs. If the temperature drops or you hear any disembodied whispers, that means he’s near, and you must leave the area immediately.
There is a large amount of people who believe in the Midnight Game. However, there are some explanations for the things people have seen during this game. Then one that I personally think makes the most sense is paranoia. When you start the game, you think you’re inviting an evil spirit into your home, so you’re already on edge. It’s 12-3 in the morning, so you’re already tired. Mix together the fear of the ritual, the darkness in the house, and the sleep deprivation, and you’ve got the perfect terrifying atmosphere to completely freak out your brain. You might see anything and book it out of there as fast as you can because you think it’s the Midnight Man. And since you’re scared, your breathing will naturally be faster and heavier than normal, so it wouldn’t be that hard to accidentally blow out the candle, which makes everything pitch-black and bumps the fear factor up to a 10. The whispers you may hear could be from air vents in your home or a result of your now scared and over-active imagination. If you feel the temperature drop, there’s always a possibility that you left the air conditioner on or you’ve got chills because of the scary situation. In short, the occurrences during the Midnight Game are likely just a result of normal human psychology.
