My last piece for #CryptidInJuly is the Flatwoods monster! All good things come to an end. Thank you @marisashorror for this really fun challenge I learned so much and met someone really cool people!
Artist’s Depiction of the “Flatwoods Monster,” 1952
On September 19, 1952—exactly one week after the famous “Flatwoods monster” incident in Braxton County, West Virginia—one of the witnesses to the encounter, Kathleen May, talked about her experience on the nationally-broadcast TV show “We the People.” Before the show aired, May described to a staff artist the terrifying being that she and several other witnesses reported seeing in the woods near their home town of Flatwoods. The drawing produced by that artist (shown above) was later dismissed as inaccurate by some of the witnesses, but it has since become one of the most famous images in UFO lore.

I currently only have a couple of designs but I do have my cryptid series up if you like any of the following:

There isn’t much to Rachel, Nevada (population: 54), the town closest to the secretive Area 51 military base. Not even a gas station. And there’s very little else to see along the Extraterrestrial Highway until you arrive here, so the lights of the Little A’Le’Inn are all that illuminate this desolate stretch of Nevada outback.
Area 51 itself is difficult to find, as it’s not listed on maps, and the faint roads leading to its encircling barrier fences are rough and muddy. A traveler can only hope to spot something unexplained in the sky, but all we saw that day were thunderclouds carrying in a heavy rainstorm.
I want to go to here
Arkansas: The Boggy Creek Monster
The Boggy Creek Monster
The Boggy Creek Monster of Fouke is Arkansas’ version of Sasquatch. He’s commonly accepted to be around seven or eight feet tall and covered in hair. Legend says that he roams the creeks of rural Arkansas. He was first spotted in 1834, when people reported seeing a “wild man.”
People still claim to spot the Boggy Creek Monster today, and he has been subject of five feature length films including 1972’s “The Legend of Boggy Creek.
I love cryptids, and may or may not run a modern-ish campaign centered around them soooo… here are some of my favorites. I had to take a lot of creative liberties with them, given the lack of concrete knowledge about them, so they may not exactly line up with some accounts and sightings.
The mothman photo is from this news article, and the flatwoods monster art is from the West Virginia Department of Art, Culture, and History. I was unable to find the original source of the Fresno Nightcrawler photo, because the video its from has been reposted so many times.
