The storyteller

Proteus is an infinitely long aquatic salamander confined to a cavernous, underground lake in the otherworld. This lake is strange in that its opaque blue at the surface, but crystal clear at the bottom, making it easy to become lost. Proteus winds through the tunnel systems within the lake, and keeps its head mostly near the bottom, because it enjoys the company of the souls who fall into the lake and cannot find their way out. 

Because it lives isolated from the world, it has a childlike perspective and understands the world through stories, told to it by generations of people. Still, its oddly perceptive, and often understands things about people they aren't yet aware of, though it expresses its observations through archetypes, as if everyone is a character in a storybook.
