Needless to say, I fell in love with this drama, just like everybody else who watched this series. With 5 episodes alone, this drama made me feel a lot of emotions. I love angst, so no wonder I really like this drama. So now I’m gonna share my favorites quotes from the drama. Enjoy!

Part 4: 秘诀

Today we are going to discuss some tips given by Teh in the drama. I would like to talk about this to see which tips are effective and also see if this drama was accurate or not, while providing tips for learning Mandarin effectively.

The tips given in the drama itself weren’t too many, and most of it are on episode 2.

Teh said to pass the exam, we only need HSK 4 which contains around 1.200 words. HSK is an abbreviation of Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (汉语水平考试). There are total of six level of HSK, the highest is HSK 6. HSK consists of listening, reading, and writing test, there’s no speaking until HSK 6. People said HSK 1-3 is the easiest, while HSK 4 starts to show different level of difficulty. HSK 4 is considered an intermediate level Chinese.

At first, Oh-aew was overwhelmed by the amount of words in Mandarin language. Most of the time, this is the problem for beginners. They get scared to start because the writing system is complicated. But Teh’s tip is really good to practice, “In Chinese, you have to memorize it as a picture, a story.” Chinese characters (汉字) were based on a picture, but not all of it is based off pictures. There are few classification:

1. Pictographs (象形): the characters is based on the meaning, so it’s like a picture, this is what Teh is talking about, but these characters only make up for less than 5% of Chinese characters. Example: 日 (rì, sun), 月 (yuè, moon), 目 (mù, eyes).

2. Simple ideographs (指事): ideographs show the meaning of a more abstract things that are harder to express as pictures. Example: 上 (shàng, above), 下 (xià, below).

3. Compound ideographs (会意): this type takes two or more ideographs or pictographs to form a new meaning. Example: 家 (jiā, home) consists of roof and pig, 好 (hǎo, good) consists of women and son, 安 (ān, peace) consists of roof and women. To understand why the characters are the way they are now, we have to understand Chinese history and culture. For example 好 means good because back in the days, it’s considered good if a woman conceive a son because son can carry family names.

4. Phonetic-semantic compound (形声): these characters have few components, some components represent the meaning and the other represent the pronunciation. Example: 想 (xiǎng, think) is formed with 相 (xiāng, each other) which represent the sound and 心 (xīn, heart) which represent the meaning. 爸 (bà, dad) is formed with 父 (fù, father) which represent the meaning and 巴 (ba) which represent the sound.

With the simplified version of Mandarin, it would be even more difficult to trace back the characters to the meaning because the simplified version focused on reducing the strokes rather than preserve the meaning. But of course we can always memorize words as pictures using our own imagination.

“How did you memorize it?”

“I practiced Chinese handwriting everyday.”

Very good tips for people who are diligent, of course. This helps build our muscle memory. If you practice writing, you can memorize it sooner or later even without knowing the words’ roots. This is called 死记硬背 which means to memorize by rote.

Use flashcards

Of course this would help memorizing the characters, and now with this day and age, we don’t even have to buy it, the internet has plenty of free flashcards available. After memorizing the words, don’t forget to write it by hands so you’ll remember how to write it. Being able to read and being able to write is two different things. After that, don’t forget to practice using it in a sentence because Mandarin has many vocabularies with similar meaning but different usage.

“You have to memorize the root of each word.”

Not really, since you can also use 死记硬背 technique and rely on your muscle memory, but memorizing the root of each word definitely help a lot in guessing the meaning of words.

Part 3: 书面语

This time we will be taking a look on Mandarin written in the drama from episode 1 all the way to episode 5. I know it can be overwhelming, but this is a good way to increase our vocabularies^^

今天 = today

免费 = free

谢谢 = thank you

庆祝 = celebrate

敌人 = rival, enemy

装修中 = under construction

福南老师 = Teacher Funan

补习学校 = cram school

曼谷 = Bangkok

普吉岛 = Phuket Island

下午我去商店，我想买一些水果 (This afternoon, I’ll go to the market to buy some fruits.)

问题：他下午去哪里？(Where did he go this afternoon?)

答案：A. 商店 (market)

B. 医院 (hospital)

C. 学校 (school)

I know this is insignificant, but I wrote this just because XD This is what they learned for admission exam, very simple. I don’t know if in real life Thai include Mandarin as one of the exam subject or not, but if they really include it, I doubt it would be as easy as this, maybe they would put up questions around HSK 4 or 5.

亲密 = close, intimate

放弃 = give up

重视 = take something seriously, value

想不到 = be unexpected

汉语说得很自然 = speak Mandarin naturally

注意 = attention

无可奈何 = be utterly helpless

只好 = have to, forced to

举世瞩目 = attract worldwide attention, become the focus of world attention

Can I just say, Teh and Oh-aew fought in such a complicated way XD What’s with those Chinese proverbs?! Episode 4 is just filled with so many proverbs, but I appreciate the team to integrate Mandarin to tell the characters’ stories because it makes me more immersed into their world.

I really like this particular scene. When Teh opened his book, he realized that he already gave so many part of it to Oh-aew. What’s left is the emptiness and broken heart because all his effort is wasted. At the last frame, the camera focused on the word ‘无奈‘ which means helpless / hopeless.

Spring festival celebration is really interesting, what impressed me the most is the word “fú”, “fú” is derived from xìngfú (happiness). During the Spring Festival, the word “ fú” is pasted everywhere in Beijing, pasting the word “fú” also has a particular way, you have to paste it upside down (倒 Dào), upside down represents that happiness comes (到 Dào) to your home, because “倒“ and “到” have the same pronunciation, all people wish in this new year their lives will be happier.

Recently someone conducted a survey in Guangzhou, Shanghai, and four other city, and discovered that there are many middle school students that skip breakfast. In 7% of 8-16 years old children, survey found out that every week the more frequent they eat, the lower their obesity ratio is. While those who eat breakfast once a week, their obesity ratio is 18.6%, those who eat breakfast 2-4 times a week have a 13.5% obesity ratio, but those who eat breakfast at least five times a week have only 11.8% obesity ratio.

Part 2.2: 对话

理想 = ideal

In this scene, Teh is explaining words that have the same roots.

心 = heart

放心 = rest assured

担心 = to worry

关心 = to care

信心 = to have faith

伤心 = to be sad, be broken-hearted

帮助 = to help

秘密 = secret

说话算数 = to keep one’s promise, walk the talk

男主角 = male protagonist

女主角 = female protagonist

帮倒忙 = to be more of a hindrance than a help

On episode 3, we got this iconic scene when Teh and Oh translate the lyrics of 如何 together. At first Teh sang,

“任往事去如烟遇见你已是永远。”(Past events are like smoke, disappearing eventually, but meeting you is forever.)

Teh actually translates it to “Past events vanishing very quickly like a smoke. You’re the one I’ve been looking for in a long time.” It works both ways.

And then Oh began to sing the chorus part, and Teh translates:

“山盟海誓你身如沙从指尖流去。”

“That means, promises are blown away like grains of sands.”

(Promises are like sands that’s slipping away from your hands.)

山盟海誓 alone means to swear by the mountains and seas. It also refer to a vow made by 2 people when they fall in love, expressing that their love will be eternal like mountains and seas. To say promise, simply use 约定 or 答应, both are okay.

“天若有义为何相遇却吝惜相聚。”

“If heaven destined us to meet, why would it divide us apart.”

(If heaven is righteous, why would let us meet but doesn’t let us to be together.)

“万里迢迢江水未曾能把我阻拦。”

“10.000-li-long river couldn’t stand in my way.”

“万里澎湃江山只需我转念一闪。”

“10.000-li-wide land is just a distance of a blink of an eye.”

“万里光阴我归心似箭，万里星河命运无我，不认输该如何。”

“Even separated by time, my heart’s still looking for you. But if separated by fate, if I don’t give up, what should I do?”

(Even separated by time, my heart still comes back to you. But if the universe’s destiny doesn’t have me in it, if I don’t give up, what should I do?)

According to Baidu, 归心似箭 means 想回家的心情像射出的箭一样快，形容回家心切, it describes your feeling when your heart wants to come back home so badly, so quickly, as quick as an arrow that were fired.

These lyrics are so poetic and they did a great job translating the gist instead of the literal meaning, because it contains some Chinese proverbs that needs intermediate knowledge about Chinese to understand it, and sometimes it can be lost in translation if one didn’t fully understand it.

Part 2.1: 对话

This time we will be looking at the dialogue spoken in Mandarin in I TOLD SUNSET ABOUT YOU. Bear with me ‘cause it’s gonna be pretty long.

In episode 1, after going on an exam, Teh called his mom and said, “不过，我觉得自己做得还可以哦。” (however, I think I did great.)

不过 means however

自己 means self (myself, yourself)

This dialogue of Yongjian and Yuexin is being repeated a couple times: on tv, written on script, and on Oh-aew Chinese new year performance.

“慢着！勇健！” (Yongjian, wait!)

“月欣！让开，我无法原谅你父亲所做之事。背叛者只有一个下场，那就是死！” (Yuexin, move. I can’t forgive what your father did. Traitor only deserve one end, which is death.)

“若你对我父亲下手，便如同你也杀了我一样。” (if you kill my father, it would means that you killed me too.)

On this scene here, Teh’s mom doesn’t speak Mandarin, but I just want to point out that she calls the customers as “ko, cik” which, I assume, is the Thai people’s way to say 哥哥 (older brother)and 姐姐 (older sister). This kind of pronunciation comes from the original Mandarin language, but the pronunciation evolve with the local language. As far as I know, ko and cik is also widely used in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore.

When Teh and Ko Hoon arrived home, mom said “妈妈的两个小英终于来了。” (Mama’s two little heroes finally come home.)

Ma called his two boys 两个小英 which means two little heroes ><

Student will call the teacher 老师 regardless of their gender. 老师 simply means teacher. On the first meeting, I heard laoshi said few sentences in Chinese, but I can’t catch it clearly since it’s smashed with the music. He said “做好”(sit down） and “今天是第一堂课高考补习班的。。” (Today is the first class of admission exam preparation class)

高考 means university admission examination

补习班 means class that you attend after school or cram school

Here there’s a little dialogue between Teh and his mom.

“怕考不上吗？不用着急。反正考都考完了。” (are you afraid you won’t get admitted? Don’t worry. The exam is over afterall)

”看也不顺眼，听也不顺耳。“

I have a hard time to translate this sentence. It literally means not pleasing to the eyes, not pleasing to the ear either. In this context, it is used to describe something that doesn’t sit right with your heart.

When Oh-aew came for tutoring, Ma said to Teh “教了朋友书。自己也要预习多。”(now you already teach your friend.(Don’t forget) You yourself (still) have to study.”

教书 means teach

预习 literally means preview. There are many ways to say study: 学习、读书、预习、复习. This particular word that Ma used means that she told Teh to study more, study to prepare for future classes.

放心 = rest assured

关心 = to care

伤心 = sad, be broken-hearted

What’s interesting about this scene is that they’re guessing flashcards for words that contain 心 (heart). We know that this scene is when Teh is feeling confused and sad because Oh-aew consider him the same as other friends. His heart felt so many emotions just like written on the flashcards, and lastly he feels ‘伤心’ sad right now.

The tips that he gave about memorizing this word is also interesting because it connects so much with the emotion that he’s feeling right at that moment. “Just think about these two character, their roots are from human (人). Plus 力 means force. And this word 心 which means heart. When these two combine, it’s like two people using force against each other’s hearts, which means ‘sad’.”

That’s such a beautiful way to remember 伤心 :）

Since I Told Sunset About You heavily revolve around Mandarin language, I think it would be nice to kind of recap the mandarin the used in the series while learning some new words. I will be discussing the Mandarin they used in every episode, starting from the characters’ names.

At the start, we are being introduced to the characters’ names in the drama. Besides Thai names, they also have Chinese names. All of their Chinese names are derived from their phonetic alphabet, so it doesn’t necessarily have super deep meaning.

Part 1: 名字

Teh：德 dé

meaning: virtue, moral

Ko Hoon：华哥 huá gē

哥 means older brother

华 means splendid, magnificent

Tarn：丹 dān

meaning: red

Oh-aew：欧儿 ōu‘er

meaning: I don’t think his name makes any sense in mandarin because they are just using phonetic translation from his Thai name. 欧 alone means Europe

The MoRaoYuLok gang!

Philip: 菲利普（Fēilìpǔ）

Kai: 凯（Kǎi）

Mod: 莫德（Mò dé）

Just like Oh-aew, the 3 members of the gang’s names doesn’t really have any meaning.

Bas：柏石（Bǎi shí）

Hands down the best drama I've ever watched.

It made me laughed and cried so many times. I'm so glad this drama doesn't take depression lightly and they really educate people about mental illness and how it's viewed by society

I think it's a good drama to learn about giving chance and understanding people
