Portrayal Notes.

Alright everyone!~ I figured I should give a preface to some new followers as to how I portray the lovely Literature Club President. Unless specified, my Monika will always be post-game. Under the assumption that this is the true ending, Monika didn’t delete herself. She erased herself from everyone’s memories ( in a vain similar to the Good Place ) and goes to school as a transfer student, but she chose to keep her memories of everything she did as a punishment and keeps her distance from the club. More portrayal notes under the cut.

Although, I’ll try my best to stay true to the game if you want to write with a certain act. Although I did somewhat tweak her obsession and fall from grace slightly? I believe that she was never in love with the player but rather in love with the idea of them. To Monika, the player had the freedom of choice, whereas she has been cursed with the knowledge that everything is scripted, her friends are lines of code, she’s written out of the story without an ending. She just wanted to have that freedom to make her own decisions and acted impulsively after several instances/resets.

I had a difficult time trying to articulate the multiple resets/instances. Feel free to message me for clarification! But I like to think Monika basically lived through multiple lives/playthroughs and every time the game was reset, she retained her memories. It’s all deja vu to her, another comparison to this besides the Good Place would be Endless Eight from the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. In that series, the main cast were trapped in the last two weeks of Summer and had to live through it 15,498 times due to the fact that the unaware Goddess was bored and didn’t want Summer Break to end. Monika would’ve been in the same boat except she’d see the player go for Sayori, Yuri, or Natsuki over and over again.

Potentially seeing all the times their hearts were broken as well due to the player’s decisions. One thing remained a constant in these loops though: Monika never had an ending. She was written out of the story as early as the festival. The first couple of times, these resets would haunt her in the form of dreams, but then one day she was just pushed off the deep end.

Or, er… I know I announced a revival of this blog. That is still in the works, I assure you! I had a post for Halloween in the works as well. I just lost track of time. However, I may have something for you all to sink your teeth into this NaNoWriMo. Ahaha, I’ll share a link once I finalise the first chapter. However, I hope this synopsis is proof that I’m still around and kicking!

I am really adoring the short stories. They’re so wholesome, I love the dynamics of the girls we haven’t seen really interact before. Monika and Sayori first meeting Yuri made me laugh. I adore her intense energy and passion towards reading. Ah, reminds me of an old friend from a long time ago.

I just started the side story content, and seeing Monika so out of her element — not as confident and struggling to recruit members into her club is admittedly so cute. I started off with Sayori and Monika’s side story and I adore their dynamic.

Revisiting the game definitely reminded why I love the characters so much. Ah, I look forward to writing with people both old and new on here. 💚 This is definitely what I needed to get the gears turning again.

I still love you in every universe.

I sat through all her topics and noticed that two of them were removed before I had to do the inevitable to advance. Although, as I touched on a previous post, I dislike the idea that she was self-aware from the very start.

It does rob Monika of any agency she had as a character. It also downplays her actions throughout the game to some extent by making her emotions null and void pertaining to the club members. It ruins the Doylist vs Watsonian dichotomy for sure. I love Monika so much as a character, and the additional lore to DDLC in DDLC+ doesn’t really do her justice.

Still excited for the side content, however I’d like to unlock all of them first before playing through them. It was such a fun trip down memory lane and as to why I love my muse so much. She’s complex, there’s so many layers to her, so much depth. A real fall from grace with being cursed with the knowledge of her role via her epiphany.

Before I dive into the side story content, I think it’d be appropriate to spend some time with Monika this weekend. Hm, considering that the side stories occur before the start of the game, it’ll be interesting to see Monika prior to having her epiphany. I remember spending an inordinate amount of time reading all 57 of her topics when I first started this blog. I wanted to get every facet of her character down to a t.

Guess what I’m doing again? Ahaha!~

Expect some kind of revival on this blog as Munika does a deep dive into DDLC+!~ I will be implementing content from the side stories into my portrayal, however there are some… creative writing choices that I’m not exactly too fond of which I’m electing to ignore. Spoilers under the cut!

Such as Monika being a self-aware AI implemented from the get-go. I may twist that idea around for crossover roleplays for sure. However, to reduce her strictly to a self-aware AI that was implemented into DDLC… I don’t know, but that kind of leaves a nasty taste in my mouth. It just doesn’t sit well with me. It really kind of ruins the Watsonian vs Doylist dichotomy in regard to the justification of her actions. There just seemed to be a major disconnect there. Which is absolutely a shame because I really loved the side story content.
