BUNGOU STRAY DOGS WAN ! CHAPTER 77
PRETTY FAST UPDATE EVERYONE !!! I kinda think this chapter would have any connection with christmas or new years and it turn out to be Dark Era chapter XD (itâs good things of course, itâs really a long time ago we have dark era trio)
first, Iâm reallllly sorry for anyone wait on my i7 translation, I try to gather my mood and turned out that I really have mood to translate bsd wan so for i7 it need to hold later~
second, seems next year (I mean day after tommorow) I gonna be busy so donât suprise if I canât update this manga (or other translation) as fast as now~
itâs not I busy with real life, itâs just that I need to focus on some games like i7 (I still wait for itâs part 4 story), some voltage game I abandon until MasKiss come out, fgo mobile (which I just finished itâs last chapter, and really touch my feels) and fgo arcade if it came to my country soon (I really plan to become whaler on that arcade game XD)
okay, to main part this time is about Dark Era Trio (so we have some previous chapter referance). I kinda sad reading this, like think that Ango really feels guilty for their friendship got broke
like always, english isnât my first language so donât hope for better translation than thisâŚ
I am told that Sept. 24 is a certain authorâs birthday.

Oh gosh, that body switch was amazing. I know you mentioned it in the tags, but would it be asking too much of you to write about Dazai and Atsushi running into Chuuya and Akutagawa while their bodies are switched?
the beginning of madness
(Akutagawa - and Chuuya - cannot compute)
Atsushi glances from the corner of his eye and wonders, for a while, why he is seeing a building and the street instead of Dazai. Then he reminds himself he has to look a little lower this time, instead of a little higher, and to brace himself to seeâŚhimself.Â
ââŚDazai-san?âÂ
Dazai kicks a little stone at his feet and says, with an audible pout, âI wanted to stay in the office longerâŚâÂ
At first opportunity, Kunikida, while not meeting any of their eyes, had chased them both out of the office with a case to solve - something about a missing cat that would require them to walk around the city to find. Dazai had been most displeased. Atsushi hadnât known how whiny his own voice could get, and how much he wished mind bleach existed.Â
âWell, you canât blame Kunikida-san,â Atsushi points out, âus being in the currentâŚsituation.â
âHeâs no fun,â Dazai says with a sigh - then he goes still.Â
Atsushi stops as well, wondering if this is what he looks like when the tiger spots prey.Â
ââŚlook, Atsushi-kun,â Dazai whispers, glee in his voice like a cat that has found an interesting toy.Â
Atsushi follows his gaze and sees, at the far end of the street, an all-too-familiar man with a black coat - even in the blazing sunlight - and a shorter man with his signature hat, both of them engrossed in discussingâŚwhatever mafia matters it is they need to discuss.Â
ââŚoh no,â Atsushi groans.Â
Dazai grins and says, âOh yes.âÂ
âDazai-san, you canât be - Dazai-san!âÂ
Atsushi nearly trips over himself - over Dazai-sanâs long legs, he complains internally - as he gives chase, for the first time cursing the tiger speed that Dazai is making full use of. Dazai bounds up to them and, to Atsushiâs absolute horror, greets them with, âI didnât know a slug would come out in broad daylight!âÂ
As though on instinct, Chuuya turns around and snarls, âWhat did you say, youâŚâ
And then Chuuya goes very, very still, the finger he had pointing at Dazai freezing. Dazai tucks his hands into the pockets of Atsushiâs pants and widens his eyes in unconvincing innocence.Â
âYouâŚwhat?â Chuuya says in a faint voice. Atsushi recognises it as the one Kunikida uses when heâs trying to maintain his grip on the situation.Â
Dazai shakes his head with a smirk. âEloquent as always, Chuuya. Youâre looking well, Akutagawa-kun!âÂ
Atsushi isnât sure which part of Akutagawa staring at them with a slackened mouth and wide eyes is him looking well. He scrubs a hand down his face - flicking Dazaiâs bangs out of his eyes as he does so - and says, âDazai-san, please. Sorry about this, Akutagawa, uhâŚNakahara-san.âÂ
If at all possible, Chuuya seems to freeze even more. He no longer seems to be breathing.Â
Atsushi isnât sure, once more, what he did or said wrong, and can only watch as Chuuya loses control of his ability and his hat slips on to the ground.Â
âChuuya, your actual self has fallen,â Dazai points out with a shit-eating grin. âAkutagawa-kun, help him, wonât you?âÂ
Thatâs when Akutagawaâs eyes take on a sudden intensity - and a certain sort of panic - as he says, âThis - this must be the doing of theâŚthe man-tiger.â Except he doesnât seem to know whether to glare at Dazai - in Atsushiâs body, the actual man-tiger - or Atsushi - in his former bossâs body. He settles for covering his face with a hand and making a vaguely threatening noise.Â
âHey, itâs not my fault weâre like this!â Atsushi says, crossing his arms and glaring at Akutagawa. Akutagawa makes a pained noise - which Atsushi decides to ignore - and Chuuya makes a choked sound, which Atsushi decides he should respond to, since itâs only Akutagawa he has a bone to pick with. âAre you alright, Nakahara-san?âÂ
âDonât - donât talk to me!â Chuuya says with the beginnings of hysteria. He stares at Atsushi like heâs a foreign entity he wants to both punch and toss as far away from him as possible. Atsushiâs concern grows, and Chuuya flinches back and yells, âAnd donât look at me either!âÂ
âNot that we want to talk to or look at you, but itâs only polite to greet old acquaintances,â Dazai says, seeming to take great pleasure in taking another step towards Chuuya. Chuuyaâs fingers clench into a fist and he nearly swings it at Dazaiâs face - my own face, really, Atsushi thinks with some anxiety - before he meets Dazaiâs eyes and makes another strangled sound. He takes a step back and nearly trips over his own hat.Â
âAh - Nakahara-san, your hat?â Atsushi says.Â
âI said donât talk to me!â Chuuya shouts, scrabbling for his hat and glaring from one to the other.Â
âAtsushi-kun is just being polite, Chuuya,â Dazai pipes up with unholy glee.Â
Akutagawa lifts his head from his hands, looking like he has a bad case of constipation. In a strained voice, he says, âDazai-sanâŚlike Chuuya-san said, please stop talking.â
âOh?â Dazai turns his grin on Akutagawa, and Atsushi is pretty sure Akutagawa has made a fist as well that he barely restrains from swinging in Dazaiâs face. âIs that any way to talk to your former boss?âÂ
The coat on Akutagawaâs shoulders begins to make unsteady ripples. Atsushi thinks he isnât imagining the shadows around him.Â
Atsushi grabs Dazaiâs elbow. âWe should leave, Dazai-san. Youâve had your fun.âÂ
âNot enough!â Dazai says, trying to peer at Chuuyaâs face. Chuuya makes a series of gestures that look like flailing attempts to get them further away without actually touching them.Â
âWe should leaveâŚnow!â Atsushi says, when Rashomon wavers between them like he isnât sure whom to attack. And keeping his grip on Dazaiâs elbow, he makes a break for it, ignoring his own voice whining âBut itâs more fun than looking for a cat!âÂ
For the next few days, Higuchi wonders why Chuuya and Akutagawa seem to jump every time there is even the slightest mention of the man-tiger or a certain previous mafia executive.Â

What do you think Dazai and Atsushi's relationship would be like if Dazai never left the mafia but still took Atsushi in? What would he think and do if he found himself developing feelings for Atsushi in that situation?
where do I begin~ âŞto tell the story of how pained complicated what even is this great a love can be~ âŤthe sweet (?) love story that is older than the sea~ âthe simple (???) truth about the love he brings to me~âŹwhere do I staaaaaaart~ âŠ
Okay so putting on my serious face now:Â
Assuming that this is Dazai after the events of the second light novel, he is likely a lot colder than the Dazai we have in current canon, because he still continues to find a lack of meaning to his life while in the mafia. If he still took Atsushi in, unlike ADA!Dazai who is both compassionate towards Atsushiâs circumstances and aware of the potential Atsushi has, mafia!Dazai likely only sees the potential Atsushiâs ability could have in the mafia.Â
However, he might also be personally interested because this boy jumped into the river to save a man who intended to commit suicide, and Atsushi, though he does not see his self-worth, is desperate above all else to live. Dazai, I believe, is drawn to people who exude life and who believe in supporting and protecting lives, so he will keep Atsushi as his subordinate, if nothing else than to continue observing and interacting with him.Â
Atsushi in the mafia would be somewhat different from ADA!Atsushi. The mafia is a place where deals and exchanges are respected, but that does not include concern for the lives they take as part of their business. I think Atsushi will struggle a lot with this, because he wants so much to prove his worth, but at the same time he is unwilling to take lives, and that sends him into a spiral of self-hatred. Dazai quietly observes the struggle, and his interest grows because this boy, even when his life is on the line, finds every way he can to do his job while keeping their enemies alive.Â
As his boss, Dazai has every right to demand that Atsushi kill if needed.Â
And as his boss, Dazai probably sits down with Atsushi one night, and while Atsushi is tensed and wondering what was going to happen (if heâd be thrown out, if heâd be eliminated, if, if, if), Dazai says, âYou donât have to kill if you donât want to.â After a long moment of silence, he continues, softly, âThere was once a guy in the mafia who refused to kill. And he was the best man Iâve ever known.âÂ
Things likely change for them from that point. I imagine that Dazai gives him jobs that do not require killing, and Atsushi begins to accept itâs okay to hold on to what he believes in and continue finding his place in the world from there, by Dazaiâs side. Atsushiâs personality is probably more jaded than ADA!Atsushi, from all that he has seen in the mafia, but I imagine that he still places the same value on life as in canon.Â
When Dazai begins to realise his feelings for Atsushi, I think he isâŚcareful about them. At first I thought he might suppress them, but itâs more likely that his thoughts and feelings go into the whirlpool of emotions in his chest for him to mull over. Like how he had no hesitation befriending Odasaku and Ango and spending time with them, indulging in his affection for them, with Atsushi I think he finds every opportunity to spend time with the boy, while not divulging what heâs feeling.Â
And as his feelings grow and he realises he is clinging to the life and affection and trust Atsushi means to him, thatâs when things mightâŚdovetail with canon! (Meaning: please leave the mafia and take Atsushi with you, Dazai.)
Iâm keeping my fingers crossed for a happy ending, even if it takes a more complicated path than how theyâd proceed from their canon selves! Hope this answers your question :)
if Dazai and Atsushi were switch personalities (or bodies) for the day, how do you think the agency would react?
(In general like this)
(This too)
(Certainly like this)
ââŚso yeah, by now you probably realise that due to reasons weâre not sure of, Atsushi-kun and I have - ah - switched bodies for the day. And we probably just have to wait until the effects wear off!âÂ
ââŚI donât think theyâre really listening to us, Dazai-sanâŚâ
âCan you twoâŚnot call each otherâs name?âÂ
At the sound of the pained words, like the person saying it was trying not to cringe, Atsushi and Dazai look in Kunikidaâs direction. He seems to be cradling his head in his hands and avoiding all eye contact with them. Now that Dazai thinks about it and looks around carefully, from a vantage point a little lower than what heâs used to, nobody is looking at them. Some have their hands pressed to their mouth or stomach - or both at the same time.Â
ââŚOh?â Dazai says with a growing grin.Â
Tanizaki makes the mistake of looking up, only to see Atsushiâs usually kind expression with a grin that says he - the person in him - is up to no good at all, with an unholy light in his eyes. He returns to burying his face against his arms, not sure whether he is about to break a rib from trying not to laugh.Â
âWe can still do our jobs though, Kunikida-san!â Atsushi says, interpreting Kunikidaâs posture for that of job-related stress.Â
A shudder runs through the entire office, and even Fukuzawa has his eyes closed after hearing those words said in Atsushiâs speech mannerism and using Dazaiâs voice. Dazai - Atsushi in Dazaiâs body - has an anxious, concerned expression that Ranpo makes a choked sound at. Kunikida remains rigid and unmoving.Â
Fidgeting with the sleeves of the coat - and wondering all the while how Dazai doesnât suffer from heat exhaustion - Atsushi whispers to Dazai, âDid I say something wrong?âÂ
In lieu of his coat, Dazai has his hands tucked into the pockets of Atsushiâs pants, and he seems entirely too cheerful. âYou just keep doing and saying what you usually do, Atsushi-kun. Right, Kunikida-kun?âÂ
âYou - !â Kunikida lifts his head from his hands and looks towards Dazaiâs body. Receiving the full force of Kunikidaâs glare, Atsushi flinches and makes a sound that seems suspiciously like âmeepâ.Â
The entire office freezes. Somewhere, a clerk drops a pen on to the ground.Â
Dazai snorts into a hand and says, âI think you broke them, Atsushi-kun.âÂ
âItâs not my fault for being stuck in this body,â Atsushi says, crossing his arms and pouting.Â
Another clerk crushes the papers in her hands, and her deskmate swoons at the sight of a pout on Dazaiâs features. Naomi makes a squeak and buries her face against Tanizakiâs trembling shoulder.Â
âOh, this is going to be fun,â Dazai says with the widest grin anybody has seen on him - on Atsushiâs body - yet.Â
Even months later, they will still remember this as the day the agency nearly fell apart.Â
Is this really worth it Atsushiâ
