The key to long, healthy hair is getting it trimmed, regularly, every 6-12 weeks. And when I say “trim”, I literally mean take an 1/8” - 1/2” every time. It might sound silly to only take that much off, but in doing so you’re allowing your hair to grow from root to tip. Yes, letting your hair grow and not cutting it at all does grow hair as well, but what you’ll be experiencing is hair growing from the root and breaking before it grows fully to the tip. If you don’t like trimming your hair often and you experience breakage, I recommend using Garnier Fructis Fall Fight shampoo and conditioner (from the drug store), or Nexxus Dualiste Shampoo Color Protection and Anti-Breakage products (from beauty supply store).

Never wash your hair in hot water. Lukewarm water to wash and cool water to rinse. The cooler temperature of the water seals the cuticle of the hair to keep it healthy. Hot water opens up those cuticles allowing healthy enzymes to escape.

Cut down on brushing!!! I know you’ve heard of the girls in fairy tales brushing their hair 100 strokes for beauty, but this is false. Brushing pulls hair out before it’s ready to fall out, thinning your hair. I brush my hair once a day and always use detangler when I get out of the shower.

Use hair-friendly accessories. Hair bands with the metal connector piece are a no-no! They’ll snag onto hair and break hair off mercilessly. Also, using a plain rubber band as a substitute for a hair band is a bad choice for hair as well, for the same reason as the metal edges.
Non-metal bands and hair sticks are your best (and safest) bet.

Pitfalls for hair include heat and harsh chemicals. So everyday after you get out of the shower you’re blowing dry and straightening your hair, you’re taking away the lustre of your hair. Heating it too hot can cause it to dry out and break. Same goes for hot ironing tools. Chemicals such as perms, peroxide and bleach, and chemical straighteners also damage hair, so it’s best to stay away. But if you can’t, try my at-home Malibu treatment!!!
You’ll need: your favorite conditioner and at least 5 Kool-Aid Lemonade packets. Mix ingredients until you get a thick paste and apply to wet hair for 20-30 minutes. You’ll get a salon quality Malibu treatment for a fraction of the cost!

Eat foods high in zinc, iron, and vitamin C. Basically, a “healthy hair diet is a healthy body diet; what’s good for your body is good for your hair”. You can also try prenatal vitamins or Hair, Skin & Nail vitamins with biotin and/or collagen.
