MOTHERFUCKERS let me tell you about the AMAZON
aka the most AMAZING CITIES I’VE EVER BEEN IN MY ENTIRE LIFE
i went to Manaus last year and none of you can comprehend the sheer BEAUTY of that place. like this was my hotel room:
“Luisa is that the sea” NO BITCH THAT’S A FUCKING RIVER
AND IT ISN’T THE BIGGEST RIVER IN THE AMAZON EITHER
then we went to an opera house AND IT LOOKS LIKE THIS
it’s so RIDICULOUSLY huge, like, and the insides are fucking ornate and covered in gold, and it’s the most lavish thing i’ve ever seen and i’ve been to palaces in europe like, it’s WILD
and then we went sailing (which my landlocked ass wasn’t used to at all and the rivers are so large they look like the sea but the water is sweet) and manaus has a BIG ASS bridge in the middle of the Black River
THIS BRIDGE IS LONGER THAN THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE I WANT THIS INFORMATION TO SINK IN
and we visited a museum on the rubber extraction period that began in the late 19th century. they deadass imported literally everything from england and built this
there are SO many native tribes still living in the amazon, and still with a good grasp on their cultures, but also very closely connected to the cities. the culture in the amazon is profoundly different from the culture in, say, southern brazil, because native population and native culture still is such a huge part of their day to day life
and with that i mean the food
and with that i mean TUCUMÃ
you eat that with bread!! on a tapioca!!! pure!!! with your fish stew!!!! it’s SO FUCKING GOOD and it grows literally EVERYWHERE
then we went to see a Bumba meu Boi presentation
do you know what Bumba meu Boi is?
you won’t learn it from me because i have absolutely no clue how to explain this
all i know it is colorful, it is fun, and people from Manaus (called Manauaras) fucking LOVE this dancing bull
ALL THIS FOR A FOAM BULL AND IT WAS THE MOST DELIGHTFUL EXPERIENCE I’VE EVER HAD
and then to crown all of this off my friends took me to the most single-handedly bougie experience i’ve ever had
IN THE MIDDLE OF THE AMAZON
IT WAS SO BOUGIE AND DECADENT I LOVED IT SO FUCKING MUCH
anyways i could go on and on about how the Amazon (at least the Brazilian Amazon) is very much a part of Brazil, connected culturally, historically and economically, it has a huge impact of at least a fourth of the country, it is incredibly politically relevant (i’ve had both classmates and clients from Manaus and when i tell you these people have a negative tolerance for bullshit), but also how they have their own culture, their own cities and their own particular political struggles, how many beautiful initiatives the native amazonian tribes took to empower their people, how the universities (yes!!! and many!!!!) in the amazon are a hub of innovation and research but also atunned to the brazilian university spirit of giving back to the community, and how demeaning and degrading it is to see people talk about the amazon as if it’s this vast expanse of nothingness
i’ll let you know i swAM WITH FRESHWATER DOLPHINS
