Statesville couple busted in heroin trafficking investigation

A Statesville couple have been arrested by the Statesville Police Department and Iredell County Sheriff’s Office for transporting over 170 grams of Heroin into the Statesville area. The couple was suspected of selling heroin and had been the subject of an ongoing investigation being conducted by both agencies. 

Brandon Lamar Adams, 28, and Kayla Latrice Daye, 26, both of Statesville were arrested on multiple drug charges. Detectives found over 170 grams of heroin valued at over $60,000 in the couple’s residence.

Sex offender arrested after wandering playground

A February 12, 2014 report was filed with the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit in reference to a registered sex offender being at a restricted location in Statesville. 

John Paul Berry, 29, of Stony Point was at the restricted location according to multiple witnesses. Iredell County officials then contacted the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office and confirmed that Berry was a registered sex offender in Alexander County. 

Iredell County detectives were then able to obtain a felony warrant for one count of sex offender being on a child premises defined in G.s. 14-208.18. Berry was spotted at a local playground, where he is forbidden due to a court order. Berry was taken into custody at his residence in Alexander County on Friday March 14, 2014. He was then transported to the Iredell County Detention Center and placed under $20,000 bond. 

John Paul Berry was arrested in 2008 for indecent liberties with a minor and placed on the sex offender registry.

Fire in Wynwood Way Apartments engulfs multiple apartments

Charlotte Fire Department says two people were taken to the hospital following a fire at Wynwood Way Apartments. Four families were displaced by the flames, and eight units total were affected. The Red Cross is on the scene assisting all victims. 

Charlotte Fire Department officials say it took 55 firefighters to extinguish the flames that engulfed four apartments at approximately 4:00 AM on Sunday, March 23, 2014. Firefighters had to disable power to an additional four units that were not damaged by the fire. These families will be able to return to their apartment following Charlotte Fire Department’s action at the complex.

Texas drug trafficker busted in Gaston County

Gaston County Police made three arrests on March 19, 2014 after a routine traffic stop turned into a major drug bust. Juan Lopez was pulled over on Interstate 85, and the Gaston County K9 Unit was able to discover approximately 1.5 kilograms of methamphetamines located in a hidden compartment of the vehicle.  Lopez and both of his passengers, Gabriela Garcia and Benito Hernandez, both of Winston-Salem were arrested with numerous felony drug related charges.

FBI searching for missing teenager

The FBI Charlotte Division is now helping the Hope Mills Police Department in an ongoing search to find Danielle Locklear. The 15-year-old Locklear was last seen by a family member March 11, 2014. She left her Fox Meadow subdivision home in the early evening and has not returned. She is a student at Southview High School. 

Danielle is described as 15 years old, biracial with black hair, green eyes, is 5’1”, and weighs approx. 155 pounds. The FBI has created posters in English and Spanish to generate new leads and gather as much information as possible in the search for the missing teenager.  You can find them at http://www.fbi.gov/wanted/kidnap/danielle-locklear/view

BMW slams into school bus in Uptown Charlotte

  A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools bus was involved in an accident Tuesday in Charlotte.  Bus number 1305 was traveling from the Performance Learning Center when it was struck by an oncoming vehicle at the intersection of W. Summit Ave and South Mint Street.  

As of 3:20 P.M. on March 18, three of four students on the bus were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The bus driver was also transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Sharon Amity death now ruled homicide

There’s an update concerning the Sharon Amity death. The victim has now been identified as Alva Richard Brewer. Earlier Tuesday his family was alerted of his death, which has now been ruled a homicide. 

Homicide/ADW detectives continued their search of Brewer’s home this morning and found additional explosive devices.  CMPD bomb squad returned to the scene and declared all of the devices safe. 

Crime Scene Search and CMPD detectives are still searching the residence for more evidence Tuesday afternoon.

Update: Sharon Amity neighbor speaks on community death

Ralph Mello lives on Lyttleton Road. He was a neighbor to the man who was found dead in his home on Sharon Amity Road. Mello was asked if the police in his neighborhood frightened him. “This is not distressing because you see the police presence,” said Mello, but he continued “It’s like someone died and then they found explosive devices in the home that’s what all the commotion was, well, so it’s kind of like no time to be upset because it’s over.” 

Mello also told reporters that the man walked everywhere he went because he did not have a car. The man also appeared to have some sort of physical disability.

Update in Westover murder

UPDATE: At Tuesday, March, 18, 2014 the Westover homicide victim was identified. The victim has been identified as Isaac Ray Carelock of Charlotte. The thirty-four-year-old’s family has been notified of his death. CMPD detectives have also identified and interviewed the shooter in this case. The case will now face review from the District Attorney’s Office to determine if charges will be filed.

Westover homicide under investigation

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide/ADW Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the 3100 block of Morning Drive in the Westover district. 

Officers in the Westover district responded to a breaking and enter call where the boyfriend of a resident was attempting to force entry to the front door of the residence.  When the officers arrived on scene, they discovered a male subject with an apparent gunshot wound. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene by Medic responders. At this time, the victim’s identity is unknown. 

As of March 17, 2014 the shooting appears to be domestic related. CMPD detectives are interviewing family members who were inside the home at the time of shooting. Detectives are also interviewing neighbors in an effort to locate witnesses to the shooting.  As more information develops, CMPD will release it to us. 

The Crime Scene Search team responded to a call to process the scene and collect any physical evidence on the premises. Representatives of the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Homicide Prosecution Team also responded to the scene.

CMPD investigating possible homicide in Providence neighborhood

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide/ADW Unit are conducting an investigation at the 1000 block of Sharon Amity Road in the Providence Division.  Detectives arrived shortly after 3 p.m. on Monday, March 17, 2014. 

Providence Division officers responded to a death investigation call for service and located a deceased male inside his residence after he was discovered by an acquaintance.  A complete release of the Medical Examiner’s Office will available following a full investigation. 

During a standard search of the subject’s home detectives found what appeared to be homemade explosive devices. Neighborhood homes were evacuated as a precaution until the CMPD Bomb Squad arrived and declared the items safe and transported them to a safe location. 

Homicide/ADW Unit detective questioned members of the community in an attempt to find witnesses to the incident.  This investigation is still in its preliminary stages and as information becomes available, CMPD will release the information to the public.

Charlotte Man On Run From Police

A Charlotte man is wanted by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department on outstanding warrants. Carlton Ardrey is wanted for interfering with an electronic monitoring device, larceny of a firearm, and felony larceny charges.  On October 16, 2013 Ardrey was court ordered to wear a   CMPD electronic monitoring device as a condition of his release. Ardrey cut off his electronic monitor and his last known location was 6341 Countryside Drive in Charlotte.

NBA player going off the deep end.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Professional athletes continue to forget they are human. Minnesota Timberwolves forward Dante Cunningham was arrested for the second time in three days, according to the Associated Press, for sending threatening messages to a woman he was living with. According to authorities, the texts “rose to a terroristic level,”. 

Police say they were contacted by the woman, saying that Cunningham violated a protection order by contacting her. The police stated “When the officer arrived and reviewed the messages, they were direct and rose to a terroristic level,”. 

Cunningham turned over his cell phone, as well as his computer as a part of the investigation. The Associated Press contacted Cunningham attorney seeking a comment. 

A team statement was released to the Associated Press, “The situation with Dante Cunningham is very fluid and we continue to monitor all available information,” The Timberwolves said. “We reiterate that the Minnesota Timberwolves do not condone the behavior described in the accusations. We continue to wait for the legal process to run its course and will have further comment when appropriate.”

Minnesota's Dante Cunningham Arrested For Second Time

MINNEAPOLIS — Dante Cunningham, forward for the Minnesota Timberwolves, has been arrested for the second time in three days according to the Associated Press. Cunningham was arrested for sending threatening messages to a woman he was living with that “rose to a terroristic level,” police told the AP Monday. 

Medina, MN police released the details one day after Cunningham was jailed for another alleged incident with the woman he had been living with for the previous eight months. The AP has learned that Cunningham had already been charged with felony domestic assault for allegedly choking the woman last week. 

Police told the AP they received a call from the woman in the early morning hours on Sunday saying Cunningham had violated a protection order by contacting her. 

Medina Police later told the AP “When the officer arrived and reviewed the messages, they were direct and rose to a terroristic level.” 

Cunningham turned himself into authorities and released his cellphone and computer as part of the investigation.  The Associated Press left a message with Cunningham’s attorney seeking comment.  Cunningham remained in custody following his arrest, but has not been charged yet.
