“All Lucy’s loveliness had come back to her in death, and the hours that had passed, instead of leaving traces of ‘decay’s effacing fingers’ had but restored the beauty of life, till positively I could not believe my eyes that I was looking at a corpse”

Hey guys, I've been seeing a lot of discussions on tik tok around oc lores and how to write them, especially when it comes to dealing with heavy topics like trauma and mental illness. What does tumblr think??
(Before i start i need to say that English isn't my first language, i apologize in case any part sounds weird)
So, from what I've seen on oc tiktok, there are always a lot of people who criticize the world of oc writing, saying that many stories are edgy, stereotyped, or badly written in some way. As someone who likes writing oc lores I usually don't really care about this kind of criticism because I think we shouldn't be here policing other people's ocs, we aren't professional writers and we mostly write stuff that resonates with us, even if it's corny or basic. if you don't like someone's story, you can always ignore it and look for something you prefer.
However, recently I've seen discourse about how heavy topics are used in oc lores and that got me thinking, because even if I still believe that we shouldn't tell people what to write, there are certain topics that should be treated with caution. I've seen one video talking about how sometimes dark stories that deal with a lot of different trauma treat these topics very lightly or without doing enough research beforehand, and honesty, i kinda agree. When it comes to oc lores online, it's always hard to make a general critique because at the end of the day everyone writes differently and for different reasons. However, we need to realize that the way we approach topics is always a reflection of how they're perceived by our general culture, and when it's posted online it can influence the way people understand the topic itself. Sometimes it is that deep, and it's on us to make the effort to portray heavy topics in a respectful and meaningful way.
In general, there is no problem in writing edgy stories full of trauma for yourself, but when you post about these sensitive topics online, especially when talking about mental illness, you need to be aware that there are people out there who could be living those experiences and be hurt from the way they are discussed.
I wanted to talk about this topic on tumblr cause I feel that it's way better to talk here instead of a comment section. Feel free to share your opinion and talk about anything related to the topic♡
I don't give my 2 cents often but... Here they are:
I don't disagree with anything you said here, but I want to urgently introduce the angle that people process stuff through writing especially trauma sometimes long before they are able to name it or get the therapy they'd need.
Peoples experiences with mental illnesses and trauma are not monolithic and criticizing someone for portraying it "wrong" in whatever way may well hit one of the very seem people they're trying to protect. And this applies even to the most well phrased good faith critique imaginable. Always consider there's a person behind that writing, with their own life and experience. Maybe they just are young and uninformed, or insensitive... sure... But maybe they're at a different place of working through it, maybe they are experiencing it differently, maybe they've seen someone experience it differently and are trying to make sense of that! Most authors are driven by empathy in some form or another!
So I think it is extremely important to keep this angle in mind when discussing this.
That said, especially in oc/ fandom spaces... There is an almost baseline fetishizing quality to how some heavy subjects are commonly treated and I am so over it that I don't actually use these spaces much so... This is really all I have to add to the discourse.
I totally agree with you! that's why I said that I don't like when people criticise in general oc lores and their themes. I see a lot of people criticizing the way tropes and themes are used in stories, not understanding that more often than not when it comes to explore trauma and other heavy themes in these stories, people are just doing it to express themselves and maybe their own trauma.
About "portraying trauma wrong" I obviously wasn't talking about people who are expressing their own experience, im sorry if it came out that way, i talked in a very generic way because i didn't want to make the post too long. What i had in mind are the people who put heavy stuff in their stories without knowing the basics of whatever they are talking about. That being sait I also think that in today's world is actually pretty hard to portray trauma and mental illness completely wrong because there are so many researches on the internet and people online talking about their own experience, plus I actually think that normal people with their simple oc lores sometimes do a better job then many popular movies or shows. However, as someone with my own oc lores, that sometimes involve heavy topics, I'm always scared to actually publish anything because I'm too scared to accidentally offend somebody, so I thought that hearing an outside prospective could have helped me.
What I wanted to say is that when you publish these stories online and maybe have some kind of following, you are not making a story for yourself anymore, but also for others, and you need to be kind of aware of what you are portraying in the story, especially if it's an experience that you haven't gone through, but someone seeing your content may have lived.
I'm sorry if my message came out somehow hostile towards people who use oc lores to explore and heal from their trauma that wasn't my intention at all! I mostly wanted to hear the opinions of people who have lived those traumas that are often being portrayed in stories (not only oc lores but media in general) and see what their opinion on the topic was.

So, i haven't watched volume 2 of stranger things but I've been spoiled that apparently nothing byler related happenes besides will coming out and saying that mike was is vicky or something. I honestly am not surprised at all and i wanted to make this post to talk about it.
In the past weeks before volume 2 came out the fandom was creating such high expectations for byler and even if I love the ship SO MUCH i honestly didn't understand how so many people were so sure that it was actually happening. Like yes the plot would have been so much better if byler happened, yes Mike would have had so much more depth as a character, yes it would have been one of the best queer love stories in recent popular media, and yes we definitely needed it in these very conservative times, but... did we forget what show are we watching??
Ever since stranger things got very popular the plot started to make less and less sense, the character archs were written season by season and most of the plot points (what characters to kill, the new enemies to fight) have been written to please the general public with no care for the original plot and worldbuilding of the show. I honestly would argue that making Will actually gay and him having a crush on Mike is something that they decided at the end of season 4 to make fans happy, i don't think it was ever part of the bigger picture.
I think that these high expectations about byler were mostly born because people read too much in a show that was never that well written. All the details that proved byler DID make sense, but were taken from a show that has never based its plot on such details, if byler was actually happening, the show would have made it WAY more obvious.
I think that the problem the fandom had is that a lot of people just created very articulated points in fandom discussions without basing their ideas within the the show itself, like be honest, how many of you actually rewatched the previous seasons? Cause i didn't, so when people talked about the dynamics in the previous seasons i just trusted their judgment, but I think that this ended up closing this part of fandom in a bubble.
I'm writing this post not to sound like a smartass, but to actually start a discussion about this within the fandom, I can't be the only one who thinks that the whole show as been lowkey a disappointment since the last two seasons, so much that I never actually hoped that something as good as byler would come out of it.
That being said I will make dnd fanarts of byler anyways, I really hope that the fandom will keep creating content about this beauty ship
