Bear religion probably fucking rocks. You're a fucking bear, you're the deadliest thing on earth, once a year an endless supply of salmon just flings itself up the river to gorge on and then you nap for 3 months.
The most delicious food in the world is protected by tiny demons who can defend it from everyone except you. Your natural armor is thick enough that you can just eat the damn hive while they buzz around you. God's chosen animals right there
Regular bears tell stories of angel bears sent by the Bear God, pure white and twice as strong as any normal bear could be, who rule the summit of the Earth and kill all who stand in their path.
And they are right, those bears exist and totally do that. Humans just have fake angels as a cope.
love the idea of bears being the chosen species actually. having a near death experience and glimpsing heaven and realising it's just full of bears, no humans at all, humans not ensouled actually, humans an accidental byproduct of God's plan for bears
great trope

btw i love when dubcon is used in fiction as a way to explore characters. i love when characters don’t understand how to “properly” ask for consent because they have never had their consent respected in their lives. i love when traumatized adult characters make potentially unwise choices about what to do with their bodies because they have the autonomy to do so. i love when characters make choices that i personally wouldn’t make, but i can totally understand how they got there. i love when characters have complex, fucked up, unhealthy dynamics, but still care about each other and want to do better. i love when writers trust audience members to read between the lines instead of spoon feeding them moral lessons. i love when characters are allowed to actually fuck up and have mistakes to learn from!
Creating an OC who's fucked up because of their parents might seem harmless at first, but unless you're very careful about avoiding certain topics, at some point you're going to have to think about what their parents actually did to make them so fucked up, and now your OC's fucked up parents are also your OCs.

Character who immediately shows gentleness and care for the person they’re rescuing, even while covered in the blood of their captors.
The complete separation of the violence they committed to reach their companion and how they actually treat them.
The switch from total violence to soft touches and “You’re alright, I gotcha. It’s all okay, I’m here.”

loveeee characters who think they're likable but not lovable. characters who know they have surface-level admirable or alluring traits and so make sure to highlight those traits so that nobody looks closer to see what's underneath. characters who know they're hot or clever or cool and use that as a suit of armor so that no one ever gets close to them, because when they strip bare and show their vulnerability they're not any of those things, which means they have nothing left to make up for who they inherently are
come to my cottage where there’s no slamming doors and we don’t walk on eggshells and you don’t have to think about how as a child you memorized the sounds of footsteps on the hardwood and who they belonged to and how much to shrink yourself depending on the answer. don’t go back to russia because you always come back to me in pieces and pretend you don’t need to be put back together. i know a place that won’t break you. come to my house. we’ll have so much fun. i want to watch tv with you. i want to knock elbows with you while we brush our teeth. i want to taste your mouth while its still warm from your coffee; to suck syrup off your fingers at the table. i want every mundane luxury we’ve never allowed ourselves to have. it’s so private, no one will know. because they can’t. and for now it’s okay; i’m not ready for the world to have us when there’s so many ways i’ve yet to have you. we’d have a week, or even two, and it still won’t be enough. how do you make up for almost ten years of never seeing a sunrise together. never kissing with morning breath. all the things i might already know if i never left that time you asked me to stay. we’ll be completely alone, together, with our clothes in the same laundry basket and your hair on my pillowcase and the enormity of everything i want touching every corner of every room.

The comic itself is a fantasy coming-of-age type story that started off as me and a friend just rambling about D&D character backstories. It's now neither D&D nor a backstory and we're having a blast

Hey guys, I've been seeing a lot of discussions on tik tok around oc lores and how to write them, especially when it comes to dealing with heavy topics like trauma and mental illness. What does tumblr think??
(Before i start i need to say that English isn't my first language, i apologize in case any part sounds weird)
So, from what I've seen on oc tiktok, there are always a lot of people who criticize the world of oc writing, saying that many stories are edgy, stereotyped, or badly written in some way. As someone who likes writing oc lores I usually don't really care about this kind of criticism because I think we shouldn't be here policing other people's ocs, we aren't professional writers and we mostly write stuff that resonates with us, even if it's corny or basic. if you don't like someone's story, you can always ignore it and look for something you prefer.
However, recently I've seen discourse about how heavy topics are used in oc lores and that got me thinking, because even if I still believe that we shouldn't tell people what to write, there are certain topics that should be treated with caution. I've seen one video talking about how sometimes dark stories that deal with a lot of different trauma treat these topics very lightly or without doing enough research beforehand, and honesty, i kinda agree. When it comes to oc lores online, it's always hard to make a general critique because at the end of the day everyone writes differently and for different reasons. However, we need to realize that the way we approach topics is always a reflection of how they're perceived by our general culture, and when it's posted online it can influence the way people understand the topic itself. Sometimes it is that deep, and it's on us to make the effort to portray heavy topics in a respectful and meaningful way.
In general, there is no problem in writing edgy stories full of trauma for yourself, but when you post about these sensitive topics online, especially when talking about mental illness, you need to be aware that there are people out there who could be living those experiences and be hurt from the way they are discussed.
I wanted to talk about this topic on tumblr cause I feel that it's way better to talk here instead of a comment section. Feel free to share your opinion and talk about anything related to the topic♡
I don't give my 2 cents often but... Here they are:
I don't disagree with anything you said here, but I want to urgently introduce the angle that people process stuff through writing especially trauma sometimes long before they are able to name it or get the therapy they'd need.
Peoples experiences with mental illnesses and trauma are not monolithic and criticizing someone for portraying it "wrong" in whatever way may well hit one of the very seem people they're trying to protect. And this applies even to the most well phrased good faith critique imaginable. Always consider there's a person behind that writing, with their own life and experience. Maybe they just are young and uninformed, or insensitive... sure... But maybe they're at a different place of working through it, maybe they are experiencing it differently, maybe they've seen someone experience it differently and are trying to make sense of that! Most authors are driven by empathy in some form or another!
So I think it is extremely important to keep this angle in mind when discussing this.
That said, especially in oc/ fandom spaces... There is an almost baseline fetishizing quality to how some heavy subjects are commonly treated and I am so over it that I don't actually use these spaces much so... This is really all I have to add to the discourse.
season four throwback comic!! this one’s been bouncing around my head for quite a while.
