One thing about fact Volo that most people forget: he a Hypocritical

If there is one word that is very suitable to describe Volo's characteristics it is the word 'Hypocritical'

If we ignore the "gods and unelected followers" trope a bit and focus more on the bit of religious part- This trait is also the main reason he was not chosen by Arceus because in most religious beliefs, Hypocritical is the trait that God hates most because of this trait: a person who claims or pretends to have certain beliefs about what is right but who behaves in a way that disagrees with those beliefs... and YES THAT'S ALL THING VOLO DOES DURING THE STORY GAME!!

POV: Volo character analysis but you’re only 6 hours into PLA

making good progress in pokemon legends!!! just defeated kleavor (what the HELL is kleavor btw, i’ve never seen that thing before in my life) and i’m having SO much more fun with it than before! rly glad about that cuz it was just sitting & collecting metaphorical dust lmao. i still have my qualms, but i definitely see the appeal now!

i’d like to talk a little about Volo. well, as much as i can from my current point in the game.

full disclaimer, i haven’t even gotten close to beating PLA and i won’t for probably another 40 hours, but i do know what ultimately happens with Volo. my thoughts here could honestly be totally incomprehensible or may change as i continue playing. but i just think he’s neat :)

so i don’t think Volo is like…... evil? don’t get me wrong, he absolutely fucked up and there are no excuses for what he does. but i see a lot of people in the fandom make him out to be this irredeemable horrible awful murderous twisted cycle path and i just. don’t agree with that.

i think people prioritize vilifying him solely to further angst with a certain pair of twins rather than focusing on the nuance that’s embedded into his character. i don’t want to skrunkli-fy him either, but i think it’s important to recognize that he’s kinda just Some Guy. he’s not a cult-leader, he’s not a mob boss, he doesn’t have people who follow or look up to him much (as far as i know); he’s just some dude who works in retail, and he has realistic, human flaws that result in self-destructive behavior that ultimately harms everyone around him. he strikes me as someone with a boatload of (likely religious) trauma and a desperate, insatiable desire to comprehend some kind of higher being. i hope to expand on this particular train of thought later

this brings me to one of my favorite narratives in pokemon. he has Three!!! pokemon that evolve through high friendship. compared to ghetsis, with a hydreigon that was forced to evolve before level 64, holds a life orb, and absolutely obliterates with frustration with the highest amount of damage possible—it absolutely hates ghetsis. but togekiss, lucario, and roserade can only be obtained when they adore their trainers, this cannot be forced.

Volo also has a genuine interest in archeology and history and he wants to share it with people! this guy can infodump like a champ, i really respect that !

so my opinion can certainly change, but these are a few reasons why i don’t think he’s irredeemable. i don’t like how complex characters are always reduced to all or nothing values in fandom spaces. there’s so much more to these characters than 100% evil or 100% good.

this is not helped by the fact that PLA just. doesn’t seem finished? which is completely understandable considering the amount of crunch these artists and writers had to deal with. but it’s still unfinished. most characters don’t have closure or even any development at all. i’m hoping on dlc at some point but. augh

soooo yea das it lol. i hope to write some actual characters studies and analyses for this guy the more i play!! this was just to get my thoughts down, i’ll probably revisit and add to it down the line!

Sometimes I think about calling my dad

I could technically call both of them, but only one has the ability to answer

The only one that I would ever want to call wouldn't answer

Not because he's too busy or that he doesn't want to talk

It's because he's just in the back of my mind now

I could technically call him, but the only answer I'd receive is the voice-mail he recorded many years ago

If I called my dad and listened to the voice-mail that he recorded many years ago I'd wait for the beep

Then I'd respond tearfully with all the things I've been wanting to say since he left

"Hey dad, how are you doing? I'm doing alright. I have a lot to talk about. I'm in a better relationship now. I still drive by stores that you'd make fun of for having stupid names. I still giggle every time I read those signs."

I would talk and talk until I run out of time. The voice-mail would end and I would pause. I'd frown and stare at my phone

Why'd you have to leave so early?

I have quite a few ideas for her. She's an inventor who makes little gadgets and stuff. She's not super good at advertising tho so Volo tries to sell her inventions for her.

She sees Ingo as sort of a father figure and loves to sit and listen to him talk.

Her Snealser partially raised her (for some currently undecided reason) so she finds a lot of comfort in him.

She had an accident when she was younger, which caused her to partially lose eyesight in her right eye and her right leg (a bit of angst potential hehe >:3)

She made her prosthetic herself out of a random table leg.

All of her pokemon (minus Mr. Mime and Snealser) have nicknames.

She can be pretty uptight, especially when it comes to her work, and she has quite the temper.

torn between not wanting to woobify Volo cause I hate when people go “blorbo did nothing wrong!” ignore darker interpretations of characters and flatten them/reduce their agency because nooo you can’t actually be bad you’re so sexy~ and genuinely not vibing with the heartless manipulator readings or yandere-esque headcanons.

I’m in love with the idea of the evil guy being soft? not in the usual way of ‘not evil just misunderstood’ or ‘tragic backstory balances out’ or ‘scary intimidating one secretly has a heart.’ In the Volo way. A lot of his merchant persona is definitely acting, which once you know feels almost intentionally cheesy. But there’s something about the way he talks... here

Sure, it could be a complete fabrication. But what if it isn’t. What if the evil guy is just soft. For real. What if “oh gee I wonder how the rift opened” “I’m just a humble merchant nothing to see here” is fake but his playful goofiness and love for his pokemon is real? And it doesn’t make him not evil or any less of a villain. You don’t have to invent a whole fake personality to hide what’s under the surface y’know, you can edit what you already have. Volo seems clever enough to make that play doesn’t he?

I don’t wanna detract from his dark side but ugh. look at this!

It’s like he wants to see if you catch on!! It doesn’t feel like a cold ruthless manipulator pulling strings to me as much as Volo being a tease and playing a little cat and mouse game. Look at him, he’s messing with you!

Sorry I have a lot of feelings about this Volo reading. It’s a character type I haven’t seen a ton of? I feel like the “soft” evil guy’s softness usually ends up being fake and all malicious intent but something about Volo is making me insane abt the alternative. Warm hearted and evil. Soft but not innocent.

You ever hear a chord with an added sharp or flat note that changes the tone and gives it this feel. An added edge, a brightness that pierces you, a sweetness that hurts. I look at Volo and think of this. I think of his theme and the deep menacing piano vs the part with the flutes and violins I rambled about. And how these exist together in the same piece and it feels so right. The contrast. The sweet, sweet dissonance. girl H E L P

Alright so I've been seeing a lot of discussion surrounding Volo and his Togepi on Twitter and I wanted to put my thoughts on the situation. In the latest Pokemas event we see a part of the story where Volo's Togepi greets N and N hears her voice. N clearly tells us that Togepi states that Volo takes care of her. And it's mentioned earlier that it's clear Volo does love his Pokemon. Yet people have noted that in the lodge the subject of "Love for Pokemon" is in his "interesting" topic category (as compared to say, "Excitement Building" or "Super Exciting"). Therefore it's led people to believe he actually hates his Pokemon and that he's actively manipulating them. I don't think that's the case. See one thing Pokemon has done well since Gen 1 is environmental storytelling, often done through the teams. You can learn a lot about a character's personality through the Pokemon they choose and the move-sets. Volo is no different. Him having a Togepi (and later in PLA a Togekiss). This is important because Togepi as we know evolves via high friendship and GameFreak often gives Pokemon who evolve via Friendship to antagonistic characters when they want to show they're misguided over just flat out cruel. And it's not just Togepi/Togekiss...by the boss fight with Volo we see him have a Lucario and Roserade...both Pokemon who have stages that require a friendship evolution. Togekiss and Lucario are also notable for being Pokemon that can sense feelings and they stick by Volo even when he's ready to remake the entire world.

This is GameFreak's signaling that Volo, despite him being a major backstabber, isn't 100% full of malice. That there's part of him that have good traits. But then why, you may ask, is "Love For Pokemon" so low for him on the lodge topics? Well it's likely because it's not a topic he's super passionate about. The lowest tier is "interesting"...and not "dislike/boring". Sure IRL, depending on tone "interesting" can be a polite way to say "I don't really care" but for Pokemas "interesting" topics just seem to be topics the character may either know only a little about or is intriguing but not something that would make them start talking a mile a minute. Volo having "Love for Pokemon" as an interesting topic likely points to the idea that he doesn't make that a huge part of his daily thought process as say Leaf who has it as her "Super Exciting Topic" (and indeed a lot of her Pokemas characterizations surrounds this as she is super passionate about it). Is it a noteworthy topic enough that's he's willing to talk about? Yes, but it's not something he's super passionate about compared to say myths and legendary Pokemon. It doesn't mean he's secretly manipulating his Pokemon and hates them. He has Pokemon that would be able to sense his true intentions if that was really the case. He has trust issues for sure (his lines about using others before they use you sound like he's been betrayed)...but that seems to be aimed moreso at humans (and Arceus) than his own team.
