29-year-old Bernardo Bertolucci’s film adaptation of Alberto Moravia’s 1951 novel, Il Conformista, was first shown at the Berlin Film Festival on 1 July 1970.
With cinematography by 30-year-old Vittorio Storaro, the film was immediately recognized for its visual style, and its reputation has only grown over the years (”some of the best use of light and shadow ever in a motion picture“).
The film was screened at the New York Film Festival in September, but when it was released in the US the following year, it was in a shorter version.
Bertolucci was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay (The French Connection received the Oscar).
