Prison Transport

Four

In a lot of small towns they just put you into a sheriff’s car and take you to your new home that way.  Special treatment, just for you!  It’s like the cops are the real estate guys and you’re their only client.  

But when I went to prison, I didn’t enjoy the ride.  The cops did; I didn’t.  They had each other to talk to, but I was just supposed to sit in that little cage in the back and keep my mouth shut.  Also, I was really ashamed when they took me out to the parking lot. There were other people walking around and driving around, and there I was in my stripes and chains.  I used to think it was cool when I was the center of attention and everybody was looking at me.  I felt like I was totally in the group.  I felt like I WAS the group.  But that wasn’t how I felt when they were taking me out to the cop car.  I felt totally alone and lonely.  Then I was riding in that back seat like some discard they’re taking to the recycle place, and I felt even lonelier.  

So I know you’re supposed to feel like, oh fuck! when you get your first sight of Prison, like it’s so terrible to see all those walls and fences where you have to live, but what I thought was, I’m glad this ride is over.  I know I won’t be lonely in there.
