The Inexplicable Logic of My Life
The Inexplicable Logic of My Life (2017) is Benjamin Alire Saenz’s new book (author of Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe). Aristotle and Dante had great character development, and Saenz’s new work is no different. Much of this book is about how we define family, biological and otherwise, and grief and the grieving process.
I absolutely love this cover design - gorgeous.
I appreciate that this book deals with a variety of family types, including adoptive families across racial backgrounds. Not many YA books come to mind that have gay characters of two different generations, which is another interesting element here.
This book may have been too hyped for me, or perhaps it was just not what I needed to read right now - but it felt too slow. It is subtle, which is its strength but also its weakness. I also felt like the dad character was a little too perfect; I had difficulty believing in him as a “real person”.
