of course he hadn’t meant it. if there’s really anyone kennedy’s cared about, it’s christopher, but his own ego refuses to give him the satisfaction of knowing that in this moment. “ i’m no stranger to using adorable good looks to get what i want. it may have worked before, but i’m stronger now. ” when did kenny become such a liar? he excuses it by telling himself the truth would only cause more trouble –- tomatoes are not a good excuse to dig up old issues with your ex, and the setting to do so, if any, is most definitely not the grocery store. the apology he gets is sarcastic, but even so, the defeat suddenly doesn’t feel so sweet. his way of rubbing it in has obviously gone a smidge too far, and his face falls into a frown that’s much more contrite than it is angry. he blinks and steps back defensively at the sudden resurgence of anger, clearing his throat before he speaks to make sure it doesn’t sound as weak as he feels. “ last i checked you used to like that about me. not only the fact that i am an ass, but, y’know, the thing itself too. ” he feels his face go hot at the realization that his pettiness has gotten to such an embarrassing state. he won’t fully concede, but the longer this drags on, the more he starts to feel absolutely stupid about it. he clears his throat again, eyes dropping to the bleak tiles below them before he mumbles. “ if you think i’m such a demon for taking them, let’s just split them. i don’t need this many tomatoes tonight, anyway. ” dinner for one, of course.

he doesn’t really know where the the sudden surge of an attitude came from , but christopher didn’t have an ill feelings towards kennedy . he didn’t have many exes , and he definitely didn’t have many bitter exes to deal with , so christopher did feel bad for the sudden anger that he felt in this current moment . ‘ that sounds like a lie , but i’ll let you have that one . ’ clearly the argument over tomatoes is hiding the true conversation that hasn’t been brought to light yet , and as much as they desperately need to find that closure , there’s no way that christopher was going to be the one to bring it up . his stomach twists into an unexpected knot and shoves his hand into the pocket of his jacket to hide how much it’s sweating . he takes in a deep breath , and hopes that the heat that’s creeping up the back of his neck will subside . now he’s consumed by embarrassment , and the knot in his stomach continues to coil . ‘ oh , fuck off . ’ is the best thing he can come up with , as the cat got his tongue . being the way that he is , christopher’s not going to accept the handout that kennedy offers , and instead makes a poorly though out decision to grab two random tomatoes from the pile on display . ‘ no , thanks , ’ christopher huffs and carefully drops the fruit down into the plastic bag . ‘ by all means , take the tomatoes and enjoy them . seems as though you need them quite desperately . i’ll make do . ’

“ because i don’t care what you want. ” probably a lie in the grand scheme of things, but in this moment, kennedy can honestly say he is not willing to fork it over. although he somehow manages to keep his mouth in a tight line, kenny blinks back at christopher before the corner of his lip tilts into a frown. “ stop pouting, it’s not going to work. ” he mutters, willing his rock solid willpower to stay put. it’s the first interaction they’ve had in a while, and kennedy isn’t entirely prepared for it, but god forbid he let it show. on the plus side, his habit of petty argument is the perfect mask for any ulterior meaning, anything of substance seeping below the surface. he can feel the fire of irritation burning bright in his belly, though it’s nearly dosed by the idea that the tomatoes are in his hands. “ good. they were mine from the beginning, christopher, and you know what? maybe i will. ” it’d be a clear cut case of exes bickering if it weren’t for the fact that both of them were like this with anyone on any given day. he should stop at the win, but kennedy has never been good at drawing healthy lines, so he wags his finger for emphasis. “ just for being a pest about it, i’m going to send you a photo of it when i’m finished. enjoy your frozen pizza. ”

christopher scoffs . ‘ that sounds about right . ’ the words sting a little more than he had been expecting , so he picks at his jacket for a second , pretending as though he was searching for literally anything . who would have thought that a fruit could cause such commotion ? ‘ yeah , well if i remember correctly it used to do the trick . ’ he’s shrugging his shoulders then , and brushes his slightly unruly hair out of his eyes . chris didn’t expect to run into him , and he didn’t expect to get into a bickering match with him either . the two always had such a strange dynamic in terms of their relationship , but it was one that worked for them until they could no longer deal with it anymore . he sinks his teeth into his lower lip . ‘ okay , i get it , kennedy . the tomatoes were yours first and i’m sorry , ’ his tone is slathered in sarcasm , and he turns on his heel slightly to get ready to leave . he’s probably gone red in the face , and his eyes narrow to slits when kennedy speaks again . ‘ god , you’re such an ass sometimes ! don’t you have anything else to do other than be petty about some goddamned tomatoes ? take your precious possessions and shove ‘em up your ass . they should fit nicely right alongside that giant head of yours . ’

“ i don’t want the bigger ones. if they’re so fine and dandy, then you should go get them. ” the insistence of his nickname only adds fuel to the fire, and kenny’s eyes narrow dangerously. he could say a lot of wicked things here, a million to hit below the belt, but he wouldn’t –- couldn’t, even –- because as petty as he is, he doesn’t have it in him to hurt christopher like that. especially over tomatoes. “ since you’re so smart, i’m sure you can figure out a way to use something else. ” maybe there’s more to their argument than the basket of little fruit, or maybe there isn’t. kennedy isn’t the most self-aware person in the world, so it’s beyond him whether he wants cherry tomatoes that badly, whether it’s a metaphor for something deeper, or whether he just feels in the mood to argue regardless. “ you do think you’re special. your dinner isn’t more important than mine. i’m hungry. and you know i like these best. ” he huffs and doesn’t hesitate at the minor concession, snatching the rest of the tomatoes from christopher without blinking twice. “ fine. i will take them. i’m making tomato-basil, and it’s going to be twice as delicious now. ”

‘ i don’t want the bigger tomatoes and you know it . why won’t you just let me have ‘em , huh ? ’ christopher allows himself to pout and tilts his head a bit . granted , he’s trying his best to mess with his ex , and although doing so in the middle of a grocery store isn’t the best setting for such dramatics , christopher will take what he can get . ‘ i do consider myself to be quite smart , so i’m sure that you could also determine what else to do without your beloved cherry tomatoes ! ’ his tone is quite teasing , and there’s a gentle grin falling from his features as he notices himself becoming a bit worked up . his jaw tightened a bit , and he really wants to know if this argument ( or whatever it’s called ) is really about cherry tomatoes or if it’s about the things that were left unsaid when they decided to end their relationship . either way it goes , christopher is finding himself to become quite annoyed . ‘ fine , whatever ! the tomatoes are yours since they clearly mean so much to you . at the risk of sounding like a six year old , why don’t you just go ahead and marry ‘em ? ’ he releases the food once it’s in kennedy’s grip , and when he hears that he’s making the same thing as him , christopher nearly wants to scream . ‘ sure , whatever . ’

maybe it’s the fact that the words are coming from his ex, or maybe it’s the fact that kennedy can’t be told no without transforming into his final menace form, but his nose wrinkles in anger regardless. “ if they’re just tomatoes, then give them to me! make something else. and it’s kennedy to you. ” the two of them are two peas in a pod the way they have a habit of being a dog with a bone. neither of them are going to give up anything easily, kennedy knows that much. they’ve never been particularly good at giving up anything they want, and even when they don’t want it, they’ll argue simply for the sake of it. it’s enough to give anyone a migraine, especially now when their forces are aimed individually at everyone, including each other. “ i just went to the atm because their machine is down. you know i love cherry tomatoes. if you wanted to spite me, mission accomplished. ” leave it to kenny and his big ego to think christopher’s interest in the same tomatoes is purely based on wanting to exact some sort of silly revenge. childish. absolutely childish. “ and what? i don’t eat? you aren’t special, christopher, now give me my tomatoes and nobody gets hurt. ”

christopher’s face immediately scrunches as he bites down into his lower lip . ‘ but i want them ! what’s so wrong with getting the bigger ones ? you may have seen them first but they’re in my hands ! god , alright kenny . ’ despite the end of their relationship , it’s evident that their bickering was never going to go anywhere . it was what defined them when they were together , and clearly it was bound for them to continue with it . they could go back and forth until they were both blue in the face about what they were bickering over , and sometimes they could forget what the subject was about anyways . his eyes instinctively roll and tightens his grip on the basket . ‘ i’m not trying to spite you but i want to make dinner and these are easiest to use , ’ he can’t believe he’s bickering over goddamned cherry tomatoes . he huffs and doesn’t take his eyes off of the taller male . ‘ what the fuck are you talking about ? first i’m getting tomatoes out of spite and now you’re saying i think i’m special ? over tomatoes ? what the fuck -- just take them , damn . ’

it’s amazing how much energy kennedy has in him to tend to his habit of pettiness and maintain a 4.0 and get done everything else there is to do in a twenty-four hour day. his frown is deep and carved right in, unwavering as a sure sign of displeasure. “ you can’t just take the last basket of cherry tomatoes. ” he spits, hands already reaching to rip it from the other. he looks to the clerk and tips his head, prepared to buy their defence. “ go on, tell them i already came and just went to get some cash. i was here first and they’re mine. ” when the other doesn’t seem keen on letting them go, kenny huffs with anger. how dare they think just because they showed up after him they can take whatever they want? and why didn’t the clerk tell them? it’s pure injustice. he opts for plucking a few tomatoes out of the basket instead, eyes narrowing as draws his tongue across them messily before dumping them back in. “ well, if i can’t have them, neither can you. maybe you should learn to follow the rules of order. ” who would’ve thought the farmer’s market to get so heated so early on in the day?

in all honesty , christopher doesn’t cook very often . most of the time , it’s whatever he can get from the dining hall before closing or whatever he can whip up out of the ... lack of food in his fridge . today , though , he had been craving some homemade tomato - basil so a quick stop to the grocery store before he headed home seemed like a quality plan . he’s not paying much attention to anything as he moves through the grocery store , dropping his needed ingredients down into the hand basket without so much of a second thought . christopher nabs the last basket of cherry tomatoes , and most definitely would have been sad had he not been able to find them ( as he had no desire to make a second stop after leaving ) . however , a familiar timber immediately wipes the small grin off of his face as he turns around . ‘ they’re just tomatoes , kenny . ’ there’s a soft grin on his features . he’s a bit stunned when the other male takes a few from the basket and his jaw drops slightly . ‘ hey ! you can’t just take the tomatoes because you lucked out . if you wanted them so bad you should have bought them when you saw them ! i have dinner to make . ’
