Orion nodded. “I don’t know if a two person pack counts, but it’s all I’ve known.” He watched Peter work on the potion. “How is that gonna work anyway? Do Malia and I have to drink it? Do you need a strand of our hair or something?”

He ignored Orion for a moment as he worked on the potion. It was experimental, at best, so he had to be really careful with the details. “For all effects, it’s a wizarding DNA test. It works on the same basis as blood curses, so it would only react to someone who shares the same blood as the test subject.” And he reached out and pulled a hair from Orion. “Thanks for your cooperation.”

Orion’s eyes snapped up, narrowing at the man. People called Peter Hale a total snake, and not just because of the house he led. “Hmph.” Orion didn’t really want to talk about it. “My mom was the only pack I needed. I’d rather not talk about it.”

“So be it.” Peter was used to nasty looks, he’d earned those almost as soon as he started talking, so really, now people’s reactions were even hilarious. He could keep pushing Orion until he snapped, it would be actually quite easy, but since the brat might be related to him, he could be not a twat for once. “Packs are complicated, anyway. Specially if they’re also family.”

Orion snarled just at the thought of hunters, standing up to walk over to where Peter was brewing the potion. “How’s that coming along?” he asked, wrinkling his nose at the smell.

He raised an eyebrow at Orion. “Considering it hasn’t blown up on our faces, good.” He gave a long look at the boy, considering whether to push the topic further or not. “Now, tell me something. Being raised by a werecoyote, were you never curious about finding your own pack before? And before you freak out, the secret is safe.”

Orion’s face fell. “Two babies on their own… So do you think our parents and our whole pack are dead now? Like, what, Hunters got them?” Orion scoffed. “Pretty sickening how their code doesn’t even allow them to see that babies of any race deserve to live and are innocent.” His face screwed up in disgust. He couldn’t believe an Argent even attended school here and how anyone else swallowed it down just because she had dimples and long eyelashes to bat.

“Something of the sort.” And something completely harder to explain, if it was true. Yet his face turned almost into a mirror of Orion’s at the mention of hunters. “Pretty sickening how their blasted code makes them higher and mightier than anyone else”

Orion frowned. He was the danger? “Did they just think I was super powerful or something? Malia’s a strong lycan too… So you’re suggesting our parents didn’t want us separated? How did it just happen, then?”

“Malia didn’t show any signs until she was nine, did she? But from what you’ve told me, it was pretty obvious you were a tiny, little wolf cub.” Peter had a theory, a theory that expanded with every detail he found out, but the implications of this theory of his were too serious --or too ridiculous. Yet to answer Orion’s questions, he had to assume those implications were true. In the hypothetical case of him having children, would he want them separated? “That’s exactly what I’m suggesting. Packs are safer by the number, two babies on their own wouldn’t survive... Now about how, that is the question.” Talia was involved, but what exactly had she done that required Deaton to swear an Unbreakable Bow? And why couldn’t he remember any of it? “But I’m looking into that.”

Orion rubbed his nose, trying to keep his heartbeat slow. He was absolutely fucked, and there was no way a skilled werewolf like Peter couldn’t catch onto that. He didn’t say anything though, which meant he was just toying with him now. “So we were in danger of a new pack? Is that why they separated us? I find it hard to believe there wasn’t any other option.

Peter flicked his wand over the cauldron once again. He felt as close to the truth as he could be, but there were still too many blank spaces that shouldn’t even be there. “Oh no, kid. You were the new pack, you were the danger,” he gave Orion a moment for the idea to sink in. If he was right... “The more I think about it, the more it sounds like a forced separation.”

“How would they know just from birth though?” Orion frowned. “Did I come out all furry with fangs and Malia just wasn’t? Did they have a real reason for separating us? And if Malia was the werecoyote, why didn’t they leave her with my mother?” Orion froze after he spoke, his brain catching up with what he said a second too late. “I just mean– Wouldn’t they– I don’t know, maybe they wanted her to find her abilities? Or something? Growing up with a wolf mother in the wild– and al that– I mean.” He scrubbed a hand through his hair. “Anyway, what kind of threat?”

“Not that that hasn’t happened before, but perhaps there were other signs, perhaps you reacted to the full moon while your sister didn’t.” Peter just raised an eyebrow at Orion’s backtracking. So his mother was a werecoyote. He had always suspected there was something off about Diana, and now the pup’s tongue had slipped, even his heart was beating faster. So, so, busted. But Peter had to be careful around this, if things were like he suspected they were, there was a lot going on that had been hidden from all of them. “A new pack rising with powerful members can be seen as a threat by some.”

Orion frowned. “So it still doesn’t make any sense…” He sighed, placing his chin in his hands. “That’s the question I’ve been asking. I was raised learning how to shift and control my lycan side from a young age.” The more questions asked, the more confused he got.

“Unless...” If Orion had shown werewofl signs from an early age, unlike his sister... “Whoever left you with Diana didn’t want you to be found. Specifically you. If Malia had no powers and couldn’t shift, there was no danger for her... we already know how that backfired, though. But if you already showed signs, you were a danger to someone.” And from what Deaton had said, that someone could’ve easily been Peter’s own sister. “A threat.”

Orion frowned at the tantrum remark, but thought it best to hold his tongue. He stepped forward and sniffed the potion, pulling a face.

“Well… I literally know nothing. My mom just said werewolves left me by her cave. She didn’t take up a mate or anything, and was an omega with no pack… All she told me was that I was possibly endanger, and even though it meant not growing up in their pack, my werewolf parents must’ve thought I would’ve been safer with her.”

“Safer with an omega with no pack? Hardly” Peter was technically an omega with no pack, not since the fire because there was no way in hell he’d accept Derek as his alpha, but he was a particular case. A newborn --a cub-- would never be safer with an omega, specially if there were indeed hunters or another danger around. He frowned at the thought, waving his wand again to empty the contents of the cauldron. There were too many apparently unrelated pieces there, and he had to find how they all connected. “And there’s that little thing about being separated from your sister.”

He started working with his ingredients again, letting his thoughts on the matter run. “Malia didn’t shift nor showed any trace of magic or lycan qualities for years, from what she remembers. Maybe whoever took you apart thought she had no powers, which would explain why she ended up in a muggle orphanage. But why not you?”

Orion raised an eyebrow. “So you gave me detention as a cover?” That was slightly annoying, but he guessed it was a good idea in the end. “What are we doing to figure that out?”

“Oh, no. This is still detention and I’m not giving those points back to Ravenclaw, I’m not fond of skipping my classes because of temper tantrums” Peter explained casually. “But it also is a cover of sorts for our little issue” He waved his wand at the potion he was brewing, frowning slightly. Oh, hell, he’d have to start over again.

“We are going to trace your parents, and for that you are going to tell me everything you know, think or suppose about them and about the circumstances your mother found you.”

Orion waved his wand to shut the door before sliding it back into his bag and sitting down in front of Peter. “A bit,” he answered gruffly, trying not to let his eyes glow in a warning. Peter wasn’t his parent and he couldn’t go throwing fits like he did with his mother. “And what are we working on, exactly?”

“Trying to figure out your parentage, of course.” Peter said like it was the most obvious thing, which for him it was. He checked some of his notes and turned his attention back to Orion, who was clearly keeping his little temper in check. Brats.

Excuse me? On the contrary, I’ve been trying to shake him loose. He’s the one chasing after me. He’s been quite annoying.

Of course he’s the one chasing after you. He’s still as much of a brat as he was when he graduated and you’re quite an attractive woman.

Orion walked in to start serving one of his detentions of many. Luckily, some of the teachers were more understanding about his absences. For some reason, even though Peter was a werewolf and should understand that Orion wasn’t totally a table, he still slapped him with detentions. “Hello, Professor,” he sighed, wondering what he would be doing during his sentence.

“Close the door” He ordered, crushing some dried leaves he might or might not have stolen specially for his current work and not really paying attention to Orion. He watched the potion he was brewing react and then made an annotation on a piece of parchment, finally looking up at the boy. “We really don’t want anyone sneaking in what we’re working, do we?”

“Rough full moon?” He asked casually, not really waiting for any answer.

Hm, I don’t know about that. Maybe not drunk, but I’d argue the alcohol does affect us somehow. It was a fine brandy, thank you.

Would be a real shame to hate your guts just when I’m starting to appreciate you.

“Come in” Peter announced, not taking his eyes from the potion ingredients he was working with before Orion could even knock the door. The boy’s smell was particularly strong after his mysterious two days missing, so it was even easier for him to tell the kid was on the other side of the door. Officially, Orion Dholewood was on detention for skipping Peter’s classes, and while the points he had taken for Ravenclaw would remain that way, he was actually more interested in talking with the boy and getting some work done on his and Malia’s tricky, little mystery.
