Hannah McGill: Skeptical about Cumberbatch fans
Skeptics have a problem with Sophie Hunter and Benedict Cumberbatch.
HANNAH MCGILL 15:39Saturday 12 December 2015
THE great clash that finally destabilises civilisation may not occur between ancient religions, political movements or sheets of ice, but between rival factions of Benedict Cumberbatch fans.
I’m not even sure if “fan” is the right terminology. There’s liking an actor’s posh growly voice, appreciating his interesting taste in screen roles, maybe even admiring the unusual arrangement of his facial features – and then there’s giving over a considerable amount of your time to online speculation that his wife is a paid fake, they never really married and their baby is a doll.
Not only am I not making this up, but the Cumberbatch followers who subscribe to these notions are numerous enough to have a collective name. They call themselves “skeptics”, and they are locked in ever-deepening conflict with “nannies” – their term for those Cumberbatch enthusiasts not given to querying whether his wife Sophie Hunter really lives in his house or what their baby is made of.
Over-investment in celebrity private lives is nothing new, of course. Lord Byron’s groupies clustered outside his house and followed him on holiday. A fan of the author Sinclair Lewis who in 1930 offered to do “everything – and I mean everything” for him received a sharp cease-and-desist from his wife Dorothy, signed “Mrs Sinclair Lewis to you”. Early Beatles devotees wept when the band members wed. But the potential offered by the internet for researching celebrities’ lives, coming to bizarre conclusions, and connecting up with similarly-inclined people to egg one another on has cranked things to another level.
In her 2011 memoir Your Voice in my Head, the writer Emma Forrest recounts that during her relationship with actor Colin Farrell, they were grimly addicted to reading horrible online gossip about their relationship. That was only the babyhood of the weird strain of fandom that has now attached itself to Cumberbatch, and other male celebrities including One Direction members, Robert Pattinson from the Twilight films and Jamie Dornan from 50 Shades of Grey. With its preoccupation with falsehood and fakery, it has more in common with extreme conspiracy theorising than with any existing form of groupie behaviour. Just as so-called “truthers” try to rationalise disturbing world events by claiming that every horror from Columbine to 9/11 to the Bataclan has been elaborately staged in the name of extending gun control or promoting the New World Order, so these new celebrity obsessives cope with the fact that their beloved is out of reach by declaring every visible aspect of his personal life to be fake.
A selling-point of an internet-enabled world used to be that it brought us closer to those we admired – we could peep into their lives, maybe even communicate with them directly. Now it’s being used to place famous people yet farther away: on the far side of great far-fetched myths about who they “really” are. Maybe it’s just built into fandom that making stuff up about them, however cruel or mad, feels safer than accepting that they’re just ordinary people after all.

TFOE: Besides this incredibly inaccurate and biased article, I wonder when there will be an article written about what the antis do to the skeptics. Not all nans are so “innocent” nor are they mature (writing articles only the nans care about? Like…that’s pretty sad as they think it will scare us into submission because they are so big and bad and powerful and they have their Prince to protect as if he cared the private life he’s chosen to mix with his public life is being analyzed without rose colored glasses).
Lol. If this keeps up, soon I’ll have more articles written about my blog than SH about her career before BC.
Mmm hmm…
MMMMMM HMMMMMM…
Mummy Hunter afraid of losing her cashcow SIL?
Oh, dear, oh, dear, oh, dear, someone’s left their lanes again…or…the Scotsman? Really? This ‘journo’ must be really bored up there in Scotland or she got an assignment from the Hunter clan…. I like that they’re all try to act surprised and dismayed if someone mentions that some couples, families in the film industry are indeed PR fabricated and they act as if this was the first time.
I think regretting to see our favorite actor’s usual public persona doing and 180, hating to be lied to and discussing and dismissing the fakery in Hollywood and in the film industry with the occasional fun posts is much less obsessive that drooling over the possible first Christmas of ccc but what do I know…I’m sure trolling and doxxing people is fine and must be fun too(????). Aaaanyway…
I see an growing intent of ‘divide and conquer’ , and the intent to discredit this teeny-tiny corner of the internet in the past few days.…I always ask myself…if we are such a tiny, irrelevant corner of the internet, why such things as the above articles exist…in the national newspaper of Scotland?
That’s the question @gnanon isn’t it. If we are irrelevant and crazy wouldn’t it be better just to ignore us in the hopes we bugger off and be delusional somewhere else? Who’s side are we a thorn in that this is necessary? The Scotsman is a well respected compact with a circulation of under 30,000. It doesn’t normally bother with “fandom” articles and pop culture. Curiouser and curiouser.
Hm, that’s the thing @omg-cyberbatch…how does a pretty decent publication green-light such a drivel as this??? Out of character isn’t it?
Connections, connections…
Ballsy: Connections? Oh, there’s a bigger one. The Scotsman were also the ones to do that little “Hunt for BC” a.k.a. the failed Edinburgh pap-op:
http://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/hunt-for-benedict-cumberbatch-in-edinburgh-1-3571991
This says Edinburgh News, but check the URL and the address of the paper at the bottom, it’s the Scotsman.
If you don’t remember the great failed Edinburgh pap-op, I have a summary here:
http://benedicts-third-testicle.tumblr.com/post/103335229865/edinburgh
And a bit of checking of the tag used, found that ATCB signal boosted this one pretty early on:
From the bottom up of course. First we get the initial hunt tweet, then the ATCB signal boost, and right after - the Botanic Gardens sighting tweet. Almost like they were, um - coordinated.
So, seems The Scotsman was in on the push of SH as the SGF early on (I mean, Senyorita was involved in that one), and now they are trying to shut us up? Right when the last dismal outing wasn’t just dismal, but he openly ignored her. And no dismal duo sightings since. Oh, and The Fail are gunning for exposing SH’s lies at the mo too. Do we have a team SH attempt to discredit us, and perhaps push BC to do another damage control outing …
All this will do is open the eyes of all the fans who have been puzzled by Ben’s change in behaviour, but didn’t know why. And they will now know that they’re not alone, others are questioning this too, and looking for answers. And they will seek out these “skeptics” and …
Way to signal boost, and Streisand Effect this. Onya!
I can't even bare to read that 'article' about us mean ol' skeptics and I certainly don't want to give it the attention it does not deserve by visiting the website. What do they actually accuse us of? Are they naming names? Absolutely vile human beings, if so.
Nonny, I am sorry I didn’t post this yesterday, but I was trying to not give that silliness any attention. Seeing as it’s been picked up by the Scotsman (of all news sites), I think it’s now fair game. (I’m waiting for an article from the Fail about us next by the way)
They were not naming any names, although it was quite apparent they’re after @gatorfisch first and foremost. I am still trying to figure out whether it’s Antis or Sophie Hunter’s side driving this, but I’m afraid whoever it is, they’ve made a fatal mistake.
The fact is this is bringing attention to the Skeptical community as a whole. That means they are putting a spotlight on us that is bound to make some people go “hmmmmmm” and not in the way they’re expecting I’m afraid.
Skeptics like making connections, we like pointing out the obvious, we like picking apart pap walks and pointing out what is wrong with the dismal duo’s behaviour, we like using lots and lots of photographical evidence again and again, and we like keeping records.
Lots and lots of photographical evidence. Lots and lots of records.
^^^^^^^^ That.
Ballsy: Lots and lots (and lots) of photographical evidence, and records:

Oh, and there’s this little “timing” thing. Their “dating” (such that it was), every announcement, the impeccably timed “oopsy”, and that so Valentine’s Day, much Oscar Voting close-off wedding that could have easily waited until after the Oscars (when, if real, they could have had a more relaxed time and proper honeymoon), but no:

“Register? I pointed out earlier that according to the UK BDM office you don’t need to rock up with a baby and prove it exists or who the parents are, just signed statements. Bit odd that you don’t seem to need to supply something from the Doc/Midwife. Need some assurances there. And adoption is a factor even tho it would be a stupid move. So, a registration won’t necessarily proves that Stuntsie came out of her va-jay-jay or that Cumbersperm put it in there unfortunately. And FTR I don’t like the wishy-washy ness of that either. But if we do see a register entry, we get more intel, including a fixed timeline at least.”
I double-checked at the Birmingham site, and lo and behold, there IS a list of necessary information:
“When attending the Register Office parents should bring the hospital discharge papers with them. It may also be helpful to bring your own passports and the birth certificates of any of your previous children. Further helpful documents are driving licence, benefit statement or council tax bill. Where the parents are married to one another and it is available, you should bring the marriage certificate for the parents. Please note that you are not required to produce these documents, but if you do they can help you to ensure that your baby’s birth is registered correctly.”
They are also advised they have to bring one piece of personal identification of some kind when registering the birth. If a marriage license is not produced to include the father on the certificate, he must present a document of parentage, either proving parentage or accepting parentage and it must be notarized and sworn to in front of a notary or government official.
So yes, they need the paper work from the hospital, either by the doc or the head of the maternity unit.
What’s weird is that if they had the baby at a hospital (interesting we have no witnesses or sightings or rumors of a hospital visit-especially since one rumor is that she had the pillow via C-section) they could have registered the birth at the hospital. We can’t rule this out and we would need a date to check.
Docs are needed. Applying for the certificate requires paperwork that has been “pre-verified,” i.e. by the hospital, and I bet the application is checked against the hospital records. I would also suspect that there is some sort of recording process for the hospital.
The issue: if BC and SH can’t provide the marriage license for paternity, he would have to swear in front of a magistrate that he is the father and sign the papers. This is where the fraud would take place if he is not the father, and wishes to take it back. Perjury is a crime. Going through this process would also show whether or not he is married to TWIPT.
So if there is a magic baby, the fraud that would take place would be on BC’s side. If he is caught committing perjury, there are serious consequences.

Hehehe! :p
Finally … FINALLY have internet connection at the new house. Good Gods what a debacle. But I do have water as my back yard so, yanno. :D What’s been happening in the world…
Well, they both can go for a ‘happy couple’ after the ‘birth’ PR shot, which would help pushing the narrative…’they are still around, they are still a couple, they are spending quality time together. He could attend on his own, which would be interestingly his third outing by himself…hm…One thing is for sure, Wimbledon is not an infant friendly event…so basically I don’t think we will see a Somebody but it could be a good opportunity to either push that they are still together or to push that they are heading separate ways (which I doubt they want now). But the best thing would be to lay low and not go-but you all know what happens when I think that…
Oh, one photo op photo isn’t going to be enough. They need to be living together and doing normal things together. She needs to be seen in those random fan photos or they aren’t selling it. 😇
I think they would need probably one more ‘happy family walking in London park’ pap op apart from Wimbledon (if they go - BC’s pram shot only circulates on social media, they need to put it out to a tabloid for the general audience too) followed by a DF article, just to show off the pram again and that’s all they need…they already sold it to the nannies no problem, the general audience should be as easy to believe it as the nannies…from here on, they can go into slow fizzle out, if they want, break-up (blaming work commitments and stress of coping with exposure) and quiet announcement…unless the tabs really have something juicy on SH and decide to release it (doubt it at the moment).

Imagine, if you will Wiks, me opening my mouth (or readying my fingers to type as it were) to comment and then just closing it before banging my head against the desk repeatedly. Good Christ, celebrity culture, the media and PR image has a lot to answer for. Bloody hell.
Hehehe yeah we all pretty much have done that repeatedly since this whole thing began. So really not that hard to imagine. LOL
