“I’m not sick, idiot.” She huffed, turning to lean against her desk. “I’m just in a rather pleasant mood.” Caitlyn must be in a good mood. She was smiling, after all.

Camille clicked her tongue. No, it hadn’t, of course it didn’t. That was one of the reasons why she’d rather work alone.

“If by that you mean I failed then no, I very much well succeeded.” She began, sitting behind her desk with her fingers massaging her temples, a triggered response at the question.

“The fools I’ve assigned to aid me because of your incessant suggestions found that checking for traps is the same as stepping on them. The imbeciles almost jeopardized the entire mission.” she sneered, eyes closed as the massage lingered, almost as if recalling the happenings had brought in a terrible headache.

The Sheriff stepped back upon handing her aunt the tea, smoothing out her already flawless outfit before straightening up, her hands clasping together behind her. She’d learned from a young age to let Camille have at least a few sips of her tea before saying or even doing anything else. The thought of the massacre at that opera house.. how the older woman managed to shrug it off as though nothing was something truly miraculous.

Unfortunately, her small comments had not gone unnoticed, only the faintest hint of a wince crossing her pale visage as the same explanation as always came from her aunt. Caitlyn’s ultramarine gaze met Camille’s glare, doing her best to at least hold her own in some way, shape, or form. Honestly... she loved her aunt very much.. but she never seemed very happy lately.

“I don’t mean to question your judgement, Auntie.. but if I had been of use, why not bring me along? You of all people should know how capable I am. The very least I could have been back-up, or perimeter... Though of course, I know very well that you were more than likely able to finish the operation alone.. ma’am.”

Caitlyn would silently allow her aunt to rant and rave to her heart’s content. It was not her place to interrupt anyhow, unless she wanted to receive the brunt of the woman’s anger. Instead, she would focus on the freshly brewed tea she’d brought in on a silver tray, setting it all down on a table nearby.

“I apologize on their behalf, Aunt Camille. It would seem that I overestimated them. Immensely.” She replied then, almost automatically. It was as if she’d rehearsed that line. The tea she had brought in was promptly poured into the high quality porcelain cup.

“Still,” Cait added in the proper amount of milk and/or sugar to the brew before bringing it to her aunt, silently setting the cup and matching saucer before her. “I’m glad you at least considered my ideas. I just didn’t feel comfortable with the thought of you facing off with that psychopath on your own.

“I only wish you had allowed me to join you. I would not have made the same error as your men. No matter, it is done. That is what matters, yes?”

Vince slammed his head on the bottom of his desk, having tried searching for a loose bolt that had escaped his gauntlets, “ow!- yeah I’m here!” he heard the voice but assumed it was the boss.

Vince scoffed, sounding like she had actually offended him for once, instead of it being the other way around. “Look I may look like some punk from Zaun, but I have tons of friends outside Piltover and they think I’m fuckin’ cool, shit I taught some of them that phrase!” he snickered.

Once he was done with the letter he folded it up neatly… all that was truly in the contents was a hello, a story about her and her husband at dinner and a few other thanks for assisting her in moving a few pine trees and chopping them up.

But Cait didn’t know that.

It truly was bothering Caitlyn, not knowing what was in that letter. An idea flashed through her mind that made her backtrack. ...Could it be a love letter? Did Vince really... no- well... it wasn’t impossible. He was incredibly charismatic when he wanted to be. She needed to see this letter.

“So... What did it say, luv?”

The Sheriff would inquire taking a few steps towards his desk. She knew well that she would have no chance if there was competition.

Once she heard the man’s voice penetrate the silence, the Sheriff headed towards the source, and sure enough, there he was... along with a dead man. Dammit. Was a killer truly on the loose? This was not something she needed right now..

“I see... Interesting... it would seem there were signs of a struggle. If I may, why were you to kill him? And what will you do now that your kill has been stolen, Mister Du Couteau? Run home and sulk?”

Caitlyn’s piercing gaze turned elsewhere, trying to think up some quick retort.

“Well… if you’re not… what is your relation to this queen? I doubt she’d let you be as close as you wanted.”

“Eh? Nah, I got alittle lost headin’ to the Freljordian capital, she guided me to my inn and even let me stay at the fancy castle they got there, put on a feast and all. It was pretty chill,” Vince explained as he read over the letter, seemingly more attentative to it more so than the sheriff…

“Wait… why do you care? Afraid I'ma give Piltover a bad name?”

Caitlyn had to bite her lip in order to keep herself from saying anything truly heinous. Why was he such a damned headache all the time? Made her job a hell of a lot harder. Not only that, but why was he so enamoured with the contents of that letter!?

“You’re as perceptive as ever, Vince. It’s no secret that you’re a little more than a handful, and you visiting other nations on your own is risky to our reputation..”

Caitlyn’s electric blue eyes would narrow at the man before her. Was it truly not that obvious? With a fluid motion, the woman would produce her badge, displaying it for the stranger.

“I am the Sheriff of this town, that’s who.”

“You say that, but I don’t know you. For all I know, you could just be here to infiltrate my forces and bring us down.”

The Sheriff was wary of strangers at the very least.

“But… so far you’re useful, as much as I’d hate to admit it. But I won’t put my faith in you.”

She had seen her fair share of betrayals over the years.

“Trust gets you killed, I’m afraid.”

The man gave a slow nod. She was right, she didn’t know him, but he was hired and brought out for a specific reason. “You can doubt me all you want, but you need to trust me at the least. Unless,” His tongue slipped from common and into his more natural way of speaking - Ionian. “You can understand what I’m saying. You’re dealing with Ionians and you brought one to sort out his own.” He took a step forward, extending his hand to her. “I promise, you won’t regret putting your trust in me.”

The Sheriff would huff and reach for the man’s hand, only to attempt to slap it gently away. It would take far more than that to get on her good side, especially one like him.

“I’d better not, or else I will be playing target practice with your corpse..”

Sure, she was coming off cold, but could one really blame her?

Normally the Sheriff wouldn’t proceed with such caution seeing a lady all alone in a bad part of town at night, but judging just by looks, this was no ordinary lady.
