you've seen the jokes. india is "dirty", indians are "everywhere", why don't they fix their own country. ok. let me tell you why, and what's happening right now while nobody's watching.

first, the history you skipped: britain ruled india for two centuries and drained it. economist utsa patnaik's research estimates around $45 trillion in today's money was taken. the india that got independence in 1947 was one of the poorest countries on earth. every "why is india like this" question starts there. you don't get to profit off a robbery and then mock the crime scene.

now, what's happening RIGHT NOW:

in may the question paper for NEET leaked. that's the national medical entrance exam. over 2.2 million students took it. cancelled. years of studying, families' savings poured into coaching, gone overnight because someone sold the paper. students died by suicide after. these were kids who wanted to be doctors.

and out of that came a protest movement. a gen z group called the cockroach janta party, started by a 30 year old named abhijeet dipke, got 22 million instagram followers within DAYS. they've been doing a sit-in at jantar mantar in delhi demanding education minister dharmendra pradhan resign.

and then there's sonam wangchuk. if you've watched 3 idiots, he's the real engineer the character was based on. built solar schools in ladakh. invented ice stupas so himalayan villages have water. spent his whole life on education. he's 59 and he's been on hunger strike for 17+ days now. reporters went to see him this week and he was too weak to talk. and the troll armies are calling him "anti national" and "foreign funded". a man starving himself for other people's children. that's the thing here, anyone who asks a question is suddenly a traitor.

it's not one incident, it's everywhere you look:

• infrastructure worth thousands of crores failing within months of the ribbon cutting. tunnels collapsing in regions where heavy rain is a guarantee, not a surprise.

• youth unemployment near 10% for ages 15 to 29, 13.6% in cities. in a country of 1.42 billion where more than half the population is young.

• only about the top 3% of indians earn above 10 lakh a year. meanwhile billionaire wealth keeps ballooning and the headlines celebrate it.

• manipur burned for over two years. an ethnic conflict, tens of thousands displaced, and the prime minister barely said the word manipur while it happened.

• journalists raided. critics' houses bulldozed. activists sitting in jail for years without trial under laws like UAPA. our press freedom ranking has cratered.

• even the petrol is a fight now, ethanol blending pushed through while drivers complain about their engines and get no straight answers.

and through all of it, the PM, who came to power on religious polarisation (americans, sound familiar?), travels abroad for photo ops and has not held one single open press conference in over a decade. not one.

what i'm asking:

if you're not indian: share this. our media mostly won't cover any of it because the big outlets are owned by the same billionaires the government serves. the only reason wangchuk's fast is getting any coverage is people refusing to look away.

if you ARE indian: speak up even if you're comfortable. especially if you're comfortable. join the protests. add to this, correct me, translate it. staying quiet is a choice when nothing in this post touches your life.

india is not "dirty". india was robbed, and it's being robbed again, from the inside this time. but it's also the country where a 59 year old will starve for strangers' kids and 22 million young people will rally behind a party literally named after cockroaches, because cockroaches survive everything.

dont get me wrong, its great that pradhan resigned and all, but i cant help but think that the only reason that this protest reached its (toothless) goal is because of how a lot of the people involved in it and heading it were privileged UC/middle-class people who although politically opposed to BJP were ideologically aligned with it. thats the only reason their voices were heard, that it was so widely televised in comparison to the trans bill protests or ken-batwa etc. this protest was just a drop in the ocean compared to the CAA NRC protests and farmers protests and what have you. his resignation was dipke's only goal, and the only reason a lot of the involved students spoke up is to get the situation back to the status quo. i hope you all remember that the education system in india needs radical change. the entire system of neet and competitive exams is flawed. and the resignation of dharmendra pradhan is in the end simply to appease, it does not contribute much to any meaningful, necessary radical change.

Thoughts about the CJP Protest

The thing about the CJP protest and the behaviour of the Delhi Police that most people can’t seem to grasp is that we, the privileged, are only one minor injustice and inconvenience away from being lathi-charged like these students were on 20th July.

The only reason we are safe in the comfort of our homes, giving unnecessary advice to these kids and their families sitting in the harsh Delhi heat, is because it’s not our turn yet.

Do you think these kids thought that they would be hit by batons when they saw the Shaheen Bagh ladies sitting on the streets of Delhi during the NRC-CAA protests? Do you think these kids thought that they would be called anti-nationals one day when they saw the Kisaans being called Khalistanis in their own country during the MSP protests? Do you think these kids thought that they would be hit by expired tear gas bombs, pellet guns, and stones when they saw Olympic medallists being dragged through the streets while protesting against their sexual abuser?

No. Never in their wildest dreams did they imagine that something like this could happen to them. Just like we are disillusioned right now, believing that this would never happen to us but it will.

We, too, will be dragged through the streets, hit with stones and pellet guns, tear-gassed, and water-cannoned, just like these kids are and those before them were. All of this to satisfy the ego of a megalomaniac who thinks he is the non-biological reincarnation of God himself.

So, just a PSA to anyone critiquing the protest: do better, then. Go out there and organise a better protest, a more peaceful protest. Show us how it’s done. Don’t sit here and parrot the words of Godi Media. Don’t sell your souls. Don’t bootlick this government. It will kick you down. It will prove you wrong. It truly will.

Also, another thing: dissent can’t be curbed. Revolutions are rarely non-violent. Everything has nuance and layers that you might not be able to grasp because of your privileged and sheltered lives.Watch the latest video posted by Samdish. Listen to the stories of these protesters, their lives, their concerns, and their issues. We can’t even fathom the difficulties they must have faced just to show up at the protest site.

It is their belief in unity, in their countrymen, and in this Constitution that gives them hope that things will be all right; that the system will be fixed, if not for them, then at least for others, who will, in turn, fix things for them as well.

I've read so many stupid takes about the current scenario of the youth protest happening in India right now, like I'm honestly surprised people can actually lack critical thinking.

1. "CJP and Sonam wangchuk are making this entire thing political" : protests ARE political, I don't know how or why you think that this is being "manipulated" by these people to politics when protests are deeply rooted in politics.

2. Rahul Gandhi, leader of opposition was present, so i will not support the protest/they made it political : he's the leader of opposition, his entire job is to make sure the government is doing it's work and to criticize it. it is OBVIOUS that you're going to see him there 🤓

3. Anti-national slogans are being thrown around : there are no anti-national slogans being thrown around 😭 the people on ground are literally having an entire karaoke to patriotic music. besides, any unwarranted slogans were asked to be stopped, and the people yelling those were asked to leave as well. Also, 'Jai Bhim' isn't anti national or anti Hindu. if you think it's "anti-brahman", just stop. Dr. BR ambedkar is the 'father of Indian democracy', it is to honor him. and if a slogan that just is trying to represent the marginalized communities in India makes you uncomfortable, then you're just casteist bro. (saying this as a privileged Brahman hindu). The only slogans allowed at protest are, "inquilab zindabad", "Jai bhim", "Dharmendra Pradhan istifa do" and "bharat mata ki jai"

4. The people are using slogans like 'Naam rahega sirf Allah ka' : first off, the first 'slogan' is a lyric from a song called 'hum dekhenge' written to protest against the authoritarian regime of General Zia Ul Haq in 1979 by Pakistani poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz. Secondly, it was also used in the kashmir files and no one said anything then but using it as a form to protest today is a problem (*cough* you're just insecure in your faith and Islamophobic *cough*). The person singing this song at the protest clarified that that lyric represents the energy present inside the people.

5. Something about Kunal Kamra, I don't remember : bro 🤣 Kunal Kamra said one line because of which most people are frying him and that's 'Sita ke Pati ka Naam lekar, Nita ke Pati ka kaam kar rahe hai', a dig at Modi government who claims to be hindu and is very close with the billionaires of our country always trying to benefit them instead of the general public. I don't see what's genuinely offending about this statement, help a girl out lmao. But it's interesting to note that these same people have no objections when BJP makes Hanuman ji dance for their political rally, no word about the ram mandir scam, constantly tries to compare Modi and Amit Shah as Hindu gods. The selective outrage needs to be studied, like are you guys protecting the religion (that doesn't need your protection, by the way, we survived far worse but when a right wing hindu party is in power suddenly we are all in danger 🤣 maybe the real danger was always BJP #thinking) or the government?

Zero press conferences by the PM in fifteen years, paper leaks, zero accountability for terror attacks that happened in the country (after the pulwama terrror attack, former J&K governor said in an interview he was silenced by PM and Ajit Doval to not speak about the security lapses on their end) and then also ask for votes in the name of the martyrs.

I have been to my city's protest. Do you know what slogans they were using? Jai Hind. Inquilab Zindabad. Vande Mataram.

India is not its government. It is not its land or its media either. India is the people, and I saw the people of India today, standing for other Indian people thousands of kilometres away in another city on the opposite side of the country. We are not anti nationals. We ARE the nation. The real anti nationals are the ones who have sold their voice, their body, their heart and their souls to the government in exchange for a pitiful amount of power and money. They are the traitors, they are the deshdrohis who have sold their country and its people.
