Why You Should Have Zero Byler Doubt Coming Out of Season 5 Vol. 1.
I am a fiction writer and I love to analyse stories and discuss them with other people. Byler endgame is obvious from so many scenes.
Why else would they build the climax to that point?
Why is Will saving Mike if Mike will reject him in the end any way and they will just be friends in the end? That's stupid storytelling.
Imagine in the final episode of the show Mike says to Will: 'I love you but.... as a friend'. And that would be enough for Will tap into his powers.
That's not possible. Even to suggest that is laughable.
Why did Will ask Robin specifically about signals?
Why are those exact subtle signals already there between Mike and Will?
Why would he ask that if he wasn't thinking Mike might have given him some of those signals?
And after Robin tells him those signals he seems lost in deep thought. Like its finally clicking for him.
And why would Will flirt with Mike if he wasn't somewhat sure he saw some of those signals from him?
He seemed so confident about it when he was flirting (loved that scene by the way).
What about the soaking wet plumbing scene?
When two people are shown socking wet within the same frame (think rain, bath, swimming pool, etc.) it always implies romantic connection between them. Besides they are holding hands as well.
The water symbolizes overflowing feelings that can't be kept secret anymore. Which is also why they get caught. Because they couldn't stop the water from overflowing outside the washroom. Their secret is out now hahaha.
And it's obvious but needs to be pointed out. This scene could have been done with Lucas and Will as well. But they needed to set these two up for the final one-on-one scene (where Will saves Mike) so they went with this.
Another small detail I want to point out. When the camera switches back from these two to Derek (56:24) he is saying these lines:
'There is a little breeze in the air telling you a secret. You look up at the sky, searching for the clouds, but all you....'
And the D joke? It was so explicit.
The only purpose of it was to show us Mike and Will's reaction to it. Both looked at each other every time Robin said that.
And most of all Mike's reaction to Will getting powers. Everyone noticed that even if they didn't notice anything else.
There is nothing platonic about this look. I call this 'I-have-just-struck-upon-gold kind of look'.
So just ask yourself : why would they do a finale focused on Will's love for Mike saving the day?
It was seeing that Mike is about to die made him tap into his powers.
Why all this trouble if his feelings are one-sided!?
No one writes slow burn rejection.
Finally let's talk about Robin's monologue in the tunnel thing.
THAT monologue was about Will accepting his sexuality first, whether he gets to be with Mike or not. That's the first step to Byler, not the final answer to whether Byler will happen or not.
If you are straight you can't understand that for gay people without self-acceptance, you can't be with the person you like. Hell you can't even flirt with them. The shame stops you from doing so.
This is why the general audience interpreted tunnel scene as Robin telling Will needs to move on from Mike.
Besides someone pointed out online that in Robin's film she only saw herself but when Will saw his, Mike was in it. So Mike isn't Will's 'Tammy Thompson'.
