✧ i'm clover! i am a 20↑ ordinary person who is currently trying to relearn a bunch of things, especially about art and tech, while taking care of my health because i've neglected myself for too long now...

✧ although there are many obstacles ahead of me that i will have to go through again, i made this to keep track of my learning quests and to look back once i reach my milestones. also, to hold myself more accountable and stay consistent with these goals of mine.

✧ i am trying to see if i can pursue another profession (which i haven't yet decided think i have decided now) outside my current profession, focusing on using my tech experience in other areas, like developing community apps, games, etc. despite this, i won't be posting too much personal information here and will focus on sharing the knowledge, experiences, and growth that i gain. (maybe a little of fixation dumps too...) you may also read my stuff on curiousbeagle.blogspot.com for exclusive updates and longer entries! =D

✧ i use this app because i often find helpful profiles and resources here that are useful for my learning jaunts. treat this as a place where i check in on my progress, share things i've just learned, and provide self-updates. i may also occasionally reblog stuff that i find useful for myself and others too! other random reblogs are found at @curiousbeagle-interests

✧ i also created a side blog account, @curiousbeaglediary , which i will use as a digital learning progress diary, possibly on a daily/weekly basis, for additional accountability.

i tried making a substack so i can crosspost my learning logs from my blogger over there too. i'm still figuring out how to use the site and i'm not really a newsletter person, but i'd love to challenge myself to write more long-form posts. i'm not a huge fan of how plain and modern it feels, but i suppose it's actually pretty good for readability and longer posts.

current software obsessions 🖱️

joplin - although i use the paid version of upnote on my overall notes, joplin remains very useful for my study notes. i used it with evernote back in college, but i forgot about it since i hardly took computer notes in my previous corp job. now, i think it's more convenient and hassle free than obsidian, at least for my workflow. i don't like too much stuff on my note taking app...

sublime - i started relearning web code a few weeks ago, and i learned to love the gruvbox theme and pixel fonts like the ones they use on ds games. with the said theme, i feel like i'm writing on a legal pad, which i have loved writing on.

readest - i discovered this a few days ago after using foliate on my thinkpad with linux. i was searching so hard for someone who made it for win11 since that's what i use atm on my main device, and there i found it. an ereader app rewritten from foliate made to work on win11, and ios too. and they also have custom themes with gruvbox! i had to stop using thorium since i started using this.

i might post a real update about this later but i just gotta say right now that obsidian is so GOOD. i’m not even kidding and i'm definitely not a shill (it's free) lol. i actually used to slightly hate it back in 2020 because it felt like too much work and didn't really have anything going for it besides markdown and that graph view thing. but now? it’s officially my main digital notebook for all my study and research stuff. i'm obsessed.

just a short update: it’s been almost a month, but i’m recharging and getting ready to start from scratch. i’ve been physically (and mentally?) unwell for a couple of weeks, but i don’t want to just rot away while recovering. i’ve neglected so many passion projects and studies, and i want to find time for them as i continue healing.

also, i’m really bad at posting updates on my accounts, but i’ll try my best.

Gentle reminder

Your workspace shouldn't always be super organized or aesthetic. Of course, it may help with the mood, but it's not an unbreakable rule. The workspace should be comfortable and convenient. So what, if there's some chaos and there's a dozen of tabs open, when it really helps you?

Having playlists/videos open in the corner of my screen sometimes saves me when I can't make myself study and procrastinate. It makes the process more enjoyable and I'm finally getting the work done. Even though all study tips usually say to get rid of all the distractions.

repurposed my x220 last week and threw mint on it. not an expert in linux by any means, but i'm definitely starting to get more into it. went with mint mainly because it's super easy to set up and i’m not really looking to rice it too much. planning to use this as my entertainment hub, plus a bit of research here and there. really enjoying the applets...i went a little wild and installed a bunch on day one x)

Public participation in science is increasing, and citizen science has a central part in this. It is a contribution by the public to researc

What's a citizen science project? Basically, it's crowdsourced science. In this case, crowdsourced climate science, that you can help with!

You don't need qualifications or any training besides the slideshow at the start of a project. There are a lot of things that humans can do way better than machines can, even with only minimal training, that are vital to science - especially digitizing records and building searchable databases

Like labeling trees in aerial photos so that scientists have better datasets to use for restoration.

Or counting cells in fossilized plants to track the impacts of climate change.

Or digitizing old atmospheric data to help scientists track the warming effects of El Niño.

Or counting penguins to help scientists better protect them.

Those are all on one of the most prominent citizen science platforms, called Zooniverse, but there are a ton of others, too.

Oh, and btw, you don't have to worry about messing up, because several people see each image. Studies show that if you pool the opinions of however many regular people (different by field), it matches the accuracy rate of a trained scientist in the field.

I spent a lot of time doing this when I was really badly injured and housebound, and it was so good for me to be able to HELP and DO SOMETHING, even when I was in too much pain to leave my bed. So if you are chronically ill/disabled/for whatever reason can't participate or volunteer for things in person, I highly highly recommend.

Next time you wish you could do something - anything - to help

Remember that actually, you can. And help with some science.
