Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time Review!
I am on the bus back home and am still in awe. This production is stunning, beautiful, and breathtaking.
It revolves around a dead dog, and a 15 year old boy with autism trying to solve the mystery. Then it spirals and delves into family issues and teaching/learning as well.
The young autistic boy is played by Alex Sharp, but his alternate is Taylor Trensch. It says in the playbill Taylor performs on Wednesday nights and Saturday matinees, so imagine my surprise when Alex Sharp walked on stage. He walked on stage and didnāt leave until intermission. Then all the way through Act 2 again, no breaks. The role is so demanding it needs an alternate, but Mr. Sharp was magnificent. His nuances were well defined, he worked the stage like he was a paint brush on a canvas. Throughout the whole play, so many things happen to his character: Christopher, and Alex did not make him cry. I loved that. He made Christopher strong and honest. He was a great actor in the sense that he made his need for the scene his objective, and never dropped. Kudos to you on an amazing broadway debut Mr. Sharp.
Francesca Faridany plays Christophers teacher, who also serves as a narrator for the play. She is kind and sweet and also compelling to watch. The moment when she gives Christopher his test scores was great.
Christopherās parents were played by Ian Barford and Enid Graham. Ian, as the father was very good. A well developed character, who makes mistakes and tries his hardest to make up for them. The mother is trying, too and both are played with sophistication and knowledge.
Choreography was done by Scott Graham and Steven Hoggett, and was amazing. It is a play, so it wasnāt dancing choreography, but rather the way Christopher moves. It was very imaginitive, and helped portray his tale.
Bunny Christie was the scenic designer and Paule Constable was the lighting designer, and together they created magic. When you enter the theatre the stage in a grid. It is best to sit in the Mezzanine for this show (as I did), to see all the wonderful things they do to the grid. It is magical. The lighting highlights certain grid boxes and then the grid lights up for a pathway for Christopher. Breathtaking.
This production is a must see, I cannot rave enough about it! The entire last row of the mezzanine is $27, which is a great deal. Go see this fantastic play!
