Hey!

Thought this page would be a good way to get the news out there to the autistic community! Sadly I’m not in a lot of autistic forums or pages/groups, so if you could share this it would be greatly appreciated!

So my name is Hannah, I am currently undertaking a Master’s degree course in musical theatre in the UK. My MA section of the degree is based on the representation of autistic women in theatre. While representation of autistic people in general is pretty minimal/awful- representation of autistic women in theatre is nonexistent. I intend to create a ‘how to’ guide on the creation and representation of autistic women, and to explore our place in theatre.

As an ‘aspergirl’ myself (If you haven’t read Rudy Simone’s ‘aspergirls’ yet, I recommend you do!) I want to tell our stories. But autism is a weird and wonderful thing that means my own story simply isn’t enough! I want real-life autistic women to answer a few questions in a survey, and to tell me what you want in an autistic female character.

In Jewish tradition, one of our holidays is called Purim. It celebrates the defeat of an antisemitic political advisor to a king who liked to prowl the streets ranting his hatred. Part of the story of Purim involves the people being ranted at inventing a special kind of noisemaker to drown him out. Basically what I’m saying is this student is following a grand tradition whether they realize it or not and they should be proud.
