okay for this i'm gonna talk about woolly sticks! aka skicks or dwarf sticks, whatever you wanna call them. i'll be called them woolly sticks though because it's cute
god.. i (my partner and i really) made these things. years ago. and only within the past year or two have i been actually figuring out fully how their bodies work
They're classed as earthly aliens (or terraliens), essentially earth life from an alternate dimension! They're also mammals, and evolved from these little cat lemur things with short tails
They're one of the many cases in my writing of evolution doing the impossible. I just can't help it man, i'm a sci-fi fan. But on that briefly, the more anomalous/magical/etc. adaptations an organism has, the more likely they are to develop more further in the evolutionary line. Something about magic/energies building up in their DNA or something. Explains why these guys are weird, considering in this, evolution been doing weird stuff since before vertebrates had even evolved!

Now. You probably saw how some of them don't have necks. Let me explain. This happened very very early in vertebrate evolution, and the reasoning as to why some individuals have necks and some don't change with the species, but generally for mammals it's determined by the sex. Whether or not a stick has a neck can also be influenced by differences in sexual development as well. And Yes there are ways to remove or gain one, it's just complicated and can be very dangerous if you don't do it right. Anyway. How in the hell do they eat breathe and live? Funny! I finally developed that like two days ago
The 'severed' edges of vessels, esophagi, and trachaea are lined with a type of cell called portacytes, which utilize special intracellular crystals in order to form and maintain microscopic portals so as to not disrupt bloodflow/swallowing/breathing.
Now, how does their nervous system deal with this? Well, their bodies have it figured out. Vertebrates have had agesssss to figure this out
Vertebrates, including woolly sticks, evolved a special type of cell called psioneurons (or just pneurons) that are held in a whole other plane. Dead serious. Essentially, their bodies occupy space in planeA, while the pneurons occupy space in planeB. Shhh don't ask how pneurons communicate with the rest of the body
There are four types of pneurons, three of which correspond to the three types we have (inter, motor, sensory). The fourth type are called crest pneurons.
Crest pneurons flare out from below the head much more than other types of pneurons. Crest pneuron fibers are nearly always found bunched up into structures called 'Pneural cords'. It makes them look like they have a mane of tiny sensory tendrils! Freaky. Not like you'd be able to see it though. If you were able to somehow see them, they'd appear as greyish white tendrils, twitching and seeming almost fungal in appearance.
In close contact between two or more organisms, the pneural cords will be attracted to each other and begin to communicate and even interweave with eachother. Many animals use this to help with predation, but nearly all animals use this to relay information quickly, as they serve as multipurpose sensory organs. This had led to many animal being very quiet unless communicating over any distance. Animals of two different species (unless closely related) will also not be able to effectively communicate by this method, due to what is essentially a language barrier.
Most mammals and avians have evolved something called 'pneural bonding', in which pneural connection can be semi-permanently established even when there is more distance between bonded organisms. Some organisms, such as woolly sticks, have a weaker pneural communication and thus can't quite talk through it, but can still sense emotions through it. Despite the weaker communication, sticks have an especially long range for pneural bonding, allowing them to feel their bonds from miles away! The signal Does weaken over distance, however.
Tldr; their cells use microscopic portals and they are all psionic. They don't really have psionic abilities like typical psionic aliens do though. They just use it to Exist and Function correctly /silly
This applies to nearly all vertebrate life, with the exception of some fish.

SRC stickfigure foot lore inspired by an artfight attack I got. They come with built-in steel toed boots.
Most people make their stickfigure OCs just a guy with fewer features. Mine are weird bears with hooves.
"Bear-sticks" are the result of six years of working on SRC, and every year they get a little weirder. I've always imagined them as having some sort of hoof-like foot, but the actual underlying bone structure and callus pad were as recent as 2025. Just now, I decided to really go into what the hell their feet look like up close. Witness their fucked up and evil toenails.
