Sooo, could you guys recommend any classic sci-fi fantasy books? I'm looking for something "dragons of pern" style, like...fantasy with a touch of science. I DUNNO, you got anything?? :D Thanks much!

Currently I’m being told that The Belgariad by David Eddings is good. Abdu, one of our third years, says, 

very much classic fantasy, dude who wrote it literally sat down with a list of common tropes then ACED them

As for myself, I’m more of a richard k dick kind of guy, i definitely err more on the side of sci-fi than fantasy with my reading (also, if anyone wants comic recs, I’m happy to oblige!!). I’ll also put this question up on the facebook group, and see what kind of recommendations people can come up with. :^)

Do you mean the steps that lead to the taff?

whoops, sorry i didn’t answer this in time - yes, but the ones by the pavement, rather than immediately outside the taf!! There’s a cash machine and a bike rack near by, and a little shelter area. For future reference, this is usually what we mean by outside the union/the union steps!!

morning all!! today we're at the freshers fayre and we'll be holding a mini competition, with fancy prizes, oooh first prize is the mug, second gets a choice, and third gets whatever is left - all you have to do is guess the weight of the items. Plus, entry is free!! Sound good?? Come and see us today at the students union in the great hall, stall 56

we've just received word of our allocation for the freshers fayre - we're going to be at stall 56 in the great hall on monday the 21st of september!! in my humble opinion it's a great spot, we're at the end of the rows, right beside the door if you come in by, you won't be able to miss us (sorry about that)

the great hall is located on the first floor of the student's union (you go downstairs if you've come in from the front entrance, or if you're coming from the back entrance, go upstairs)

please come and visit us, we'd love to meet you all!! in the meantime, if you have any questions (either about the society, or about cardiff uni, or any worries at all), feel free to ask us right here :^) (or if you really want to, on my personal blog which is a Mess™)

calling all cardiff freshers!! well done on getting into cardiff university, we’re super proud of you and we haven’t even met you, yet 

if you’re into sci-fi and fantasy - whether it’s lord of the rings, star trek, doctor who, the avengers, or a multitude of other fandoms - then let me formally introduce you to cardiff university sci-fan soc!!

we have weekly monday meetings, as well as holding other events like scavenger hunts, cinema trips/midnight showings of films, and parties - our first event will most likely be a quiz. for more information, drop by the freshers fayre during freshers week (date tba, i think) 

in the meantime, if you’ve got any questions about the society, or about cardiff uni in general, don’t hesitate to contact us - even if you’re not thinking of joining, we’re still happy to help with any worries you might have (if you really want to you can contact the person writing this message, too)

Surprise surprise, look who we bumped into during our trip to the Doctor Who Experience today!! Apparently not even the staff knew he was going to visit. We’re very lucky to have been there at the same time as none other than Peter Capaldi!!
