Donât Call Me Angel
Luke Patterson x Reader
Part 6
Word Count: flo milli shit
Warning: angst, swearing
Authorâs Note: are yâall still alive after part 5? Because if Iâve correctly gauged your reactions to parts 1-4, then Iâm assuming at least some part of you was demolished by part 5 lmao. But donât worry, I feel the same way! I never know whatâs gonna happen when I write them! I only know what happens at the start based on what I ended up making the cliffhanger last time! Also, Iâm writing more lyrics in this chapter!
Hereâs my masterlist!
â
âŠI couldnât even begin to come up with a clever thing to say before his lips were on mine. His hands cradled my face as if heâd held it a thousand times. I gripped his biceps, not sure if I was holding myself steady or getting ready to push him away. He had broken the kiss before my mind could even consider what to do with my lips. We both took a couple heavy breaths before looking at each other.
âIâm sorry, I didnât mean to-â I cut Luke off, connecting our lips once again. If I was going to kiss this bastard, I was gonna do it right.
Even though I despised him for the most part, Iâd be lying to myself if I said I hadnât thought about planting one on him as a secret weapon. But in this moment, I wasnât kissing him to get an advantage over him in our silly grudge match. I was kissing him because I wanted my reckless abandonment to work in my favor for once. Usually my impulsive behavior got me in trouble or in the middle of embarrassing situations like the ones Iâd recently been in with Luke. But not only was I in charge of this moment, I was enjoying it. Although I had to admit, the look of utter confusion and disbelief on the poor suckerâs face after Iâd broken the kiss was without a doubt, absolutely priceless.
âWait, so you did want me to kiss you last week?â Lukeâs stretched his neck a bit so he could stare deeper into my eyes, looking for an answer in them.
âIn that moment, no,â I responded truthfully. I took a deep breath. âBut just now, yes.â I told him, avoiding eye contact. I still wasnât comfortable with the idea of being vulnerable in front of someone Iâd so adamantly disliked for ages.
âSo now what?â Lukeâs fingers were fidgeting with the chain hanging from his jeans. From all the years Iâd spent glaring at him, Iâd picked up on his inability to stand still. I had unknowingly tilted my head in wonderment of his habit, before I returned my gaze to the warm hazel glow that came from his irises.
âNow, we get to work on that song I started.â I walked over to my backpack, digging through it until I found the folded piece of paper that had found its way to the bottom of the bag. I began looking around for my mechanical pencil only to see Luke in my peripheral vision, reaching for the writing implement that was tucked behind his ear. He held it out to me, my hand just barely brushing against his as I lifted my arm to grab it from him.
âDoes this mean youâll stop throwing your pencils at me?â
âLikely story.â I teased. I took a seat on the stool beside me and hunched over the single sheet of loose leaf thats pointy edges had been dulled from stashing it. I read over the lyrics I had written just a week ago, hoping inspiration would strike. When I couldnât come up with anything, I turned to Luke, who looked like he was about to explode.
âOk so I,â He started, as he paced back and forth with a spring in his step. âI couldnât stop thinking about the last line of the song.â He moved his around to gesticulate, causing a smile to find its way onto my lips.
I allowed myself to take in his presence, this time with no shame. He was wearing what was obviously a self-cut Rolling Stones t-shirt, along with a red and black flannel. His black skinny jeans and checkered vans were staples in his wardrobe, just like the muscle shirts. I couldnât lie, he had incredible taste when it came to style, not to mention music.
âWhen I know just how bright you glow,â he softly sang out the lyrics as he walked his way over to slide onto the lab table. âI was thinking we could play off of that.â He looked to me for confirmation, to which I grinned and tapped the eraser of my pencil on my chin.
âDid you have anything specific in mind?â I asked, thinking about what part of the song these lyrics would be in.
âI have this songâ well, itâs more of a skeleton of a song, but I think your lyrics will fill in the spaces perfectly.â He pulled out a travel-sized leather notebook from his back pocket, doing his best to bend it the opposite direction that it had been curved in.
âWhatâs it called?â I asked ask he flipped through the journal. I noticed some faded pen scribbles scattered across the smooth-looking material of the cover. The markings consisted of zig-zags, shapes, random math calculations, and what looked to me like secret coding.
âIt doesnât have a title, but Iâve got the chorus down so maybe I can name it something from there. Here, look.â He found the page he was looking for, flattening the spine and holding the book in front of me. I couldnât quite see the lyrics due to the lyrics being written in what appeared to be a pen with inconsistent ink flow. I reached to grab the journal from his hands, but he pulled it away.
âHey!â He quietly exclaimed.
âI didnât mean to upset you. I was just trying to read the lyrics, I couldnât see them. Iâm sorry.â I said. His nostrils flared as he breathed out of his nose, looking tense.
âNo, itâs not your fault,â he sighed before handing me the journal. I was unsure of taking it from his hands, but he held it out further. I let him set it down into my hands, holding it carefully. âI justâ this journal means a lot to me. And youâre the first person to read whatâs inside it.â I looked up at him with a sympathetic smile.
âAre you sure itâs okay? You can just read me the lyrics if youâd prefer to keep the actual, physical journal itself private.â I offered. He shook his head and nodded upward, giving me the greenlight to read the words on the page.
Your eyes, how they shine is a sight to behold,
As I get to know them, the pages unfold
They offer a preview of whatâs in your soul,
Telling a story thatâs never been told
I looked up at Luke only to be met with his finger directing my gaze back toward the lyrics.
Iâm starting to learn what life is about
You grab a hold of my heart, ripping it out
Your words light a fire, I watch as you shout
The truth is unearthed, all weâre left withâs the doubt
I moved on from the chorus to the part labeled âSecond Verseâ
Itâs been a while since the last time weâve spoken
Itâs never been harder to fix whatâs been broken
I know that itâs getting late, but I was still hoping
That youâd let me stay, leaving your window open
Although Luke had only written the first two verses, along with a chorus in the middle, I could feel the passion behind the lyrics. It reminded me of All Time Lowâs music, a bit punk and grunge, but providing the listener with a clear story.
âSo I was thinking your lyrics could be at the very end of the song, as the start of an interlude that would flow into the next song which would be an instrumental break. That is, if it were to be part of an album.â Luke went into detail about his ideas for the unfinished song.
âThatâs awesome. Seriously Patterson, I mean it. Youâve got mad writing skills. Iâd love to hear the melody youâve got for this.â I enthused.
âWell I donât know if she texted you, but weâre rehearsing at Julieâs today. If you want, I can give you a ride there, you can watch us practice, and I can play it for you there or...â
âOr...?â I asked while I mimicked him trailing off.
âOr I can drive you back to my place and play it for you and work on the song. If youâd feel more comfortable at your place we could go there instead.â
âIâll have to see what my parents are up to, but I can say yes to rehearsal at Julieâs.â I told him as I grabbed the paper with my lyrics, folding it back up and putting it in my back pocket for safekeeping.
I looked at the clock above the doorframe. It took me a few seconds to figure out the minute hand; it can be tricky at times to tell which little tick mark itâs pointing at. I deduced that it was 3:44pm. Mr. Wells said heâd be back at 45, and just as the hand had twitched to the 9, the door handle jiggled and in walked the sweater-vest-clad man with a larger stack of papers than he had left with.
âRight on time, Franklin!â Luke greeted the teacher by his first name. Patterson was that typical ball-buster of a student who calls all the teachers by their first name or a shortened version of their surname. Mr. Wells let out a sigh of disappointment, but didnât bother to correct him, knowing it would be in vain.
âTo be quite honest, Iâd figured you two wouldâve been gone by the time I got back.â His eyes stayed glued to his computer as he spoke to us. Luke and I looked at each other, amused.
Did Mr. Wells just imply that we would have been able to leave earlier? It was too late to solve that mystery, but there was another one âone that completely flew over my head before this momentâ waiting to be investigated. Was I going on a date with Luke?

â
In all the dreams sheâd had of fighting Luke Patterson, Y/N went in guns blazing, kicking and punching, showing no mercy. However, the embarrassment she was still trying to bury from the compliments on her songwriting had obliterated her plan of attack. In addition to that, her worst enemy was being nice and vulnerable, even going as far as complimenting her. He was turning her into a simp, and that was a fate that Y/N refused to accept.
The silence was deafening in the Molinaâs garage as everyone anticipated Y/Nâs first move in the smackdown of a lifetime. The usual spitfire of a girl was ominously silent, the only thing heating up was her face. Her cheeks were bright red, she could feel it. She could also feel the burning sensation in her ribcage, right in the middle, around her sternum. While her chances of knocking out the muscular jackass were getting slimmer by the second, Y/N was grateful she was too blindsided by the situation to fall victim to her greatest weakness: angry crying.
Deciding to act upon the iota of impulsivity that remained after being bodyslammed by the praise of her peers, Y/N sent a kick behind her, hitting Lukeâs shin. Bullseye.
âOww,â Luke whined. âWhat was that for?â
âYou really have to ask? That on its own is deserving of a kick to the other shin.â You said, moving to be on the other side of him. Before your shoe could hit his leg, you felt Lukeâs hand grab your ankle.
âMaybe you should rethink that.â Lukeâs retort struck a nerve in you, as did all of the things heâs said. He released his grip on your ankle, chuckling to himself. You scowled at him, walking away from him and over to where Julie was.
âOkay thatâs enough fun for today,â you said as you snatched the paper out of Julieâs hands, folding it and stashing it in your back pocket. âI think Iâm gonna head out. Text me when you can, Jules.â You grabbed your backpack as you hit the button to open the garage door.
âOh, uhm ok, bye! See you tomorrow!â Julie called out to you, followed by a jumbled chorus of goodbyes from the rest of the group. You heard the garage door close behind you as you headed down the driveway. You had put your earbuds in and were already listening to a song.
âY/N, wait up!â You heard your name being called during a part of the song that was quieter than the rest. You spun on your heel to see none other than Luke jogging up to you. You took out your right ear bud, trying to get the message across that you were kinda busy.
âWhat do you want Patterson?â You questioned. You were still ticked off at him for mentioning your singing. It was a sensitive topic, and the tone of your voice conveyed as much.
âOof, sorry,â he sucked his teeth as he grimaced. âI just wanted to know if you wanted to try writing a full song together sometime.â He tilted his head to the side as he tried to read your expression.
âYou know, when you mentioned it earlier, I wouldâve said yes...â
âBut?â
âBut then you went and made me look like a complete idiot in front of everyone!â
âDonât be ridiculous, Y/N. You always look like a complete idiot!â Luke tried to lighten the mood of the conversation, but quickly realized just how serious you were. You sat on the curb at the end of Julieâs driveway, hugging your knees to your chest.
âWhy are you like this?â You asked, looking straight ahead, even as Luke came and sat down beside you.
âLike what? Ruggedly handsome and uber sexy?â He attempted to make you laugh, but you turned your head away and rested it on your knees before he could see a smile creep onto your face.
âIâm serious, Patterson,â you switched over to laying the right side of your head on your knees so you could talk to Luke, who was sitting on your left. âWhy do you act the way you do?â You looked up at him, but quickly turned to face forward again. You didnât want him to see the tears that were threatening to spill out.
âIâm still not sure exactly what you mean, but whatever I did to hurt you, Iâm sorry.â He offered an apology and was about to rest his hand on your back before catching himself and ultimately deciding against it.
âYouâre not sure what I mean?â You seethed, standing up quickly. You knew the tears would come out any second, and youâd rather internally combust before youâd let Luke Patterson see you cry. âWhat I mean is, why do you act like you know whatâs best for everyone? Why do you act like youâre right all the time?â You were shouting at him. It was too late to run away from it now, you felt tears streaming down your cheeks.
âI donât mean to, Iââ
âSave it. I donât want to be near you for another second.â You start to walk away, before Luke grabs your wrist. You turn around, unable to hide the anger and shock on your face. You shake free from his grasp, but remain facing him.
âWhatâs your deal, Y/N?â Luke raised his voice, gesturing to you with his arms. âWhatâs the problem? Why is it that you are always so mad at the world... that youâre always mad at me?â He was shouting now.
It had always perplexed him as to why the girl didnât enjoy his presence. Luke was so used to being adored by his peers, kids and adults alike. He couldnât figure out for the life of him why his classmate was the exception. Y/N strode over towards him, looking up. The fire in both of their eyes was brighter than the lights that lined the street.
âWell for starters, telling people about my singing, which you werenât even supposed to hear,â you were still shouting, even as you choked back tears. âAlso, for calling me nicknames when I explicitly told you not to,â you continued, poking him harshly in the chest as you took steps towards him. This had caused Luke to step back in syncopation with your forward movements. Before you could finish your list, Luke spoke up.
âYou and I both know those arenât legitimate reasons as to why youâre so hostile towards me,â Lukeâs voice was threatening to crack as he yelled. You noticed a tear trailing down his cheek. He threw his hands in the air, pacing in a circle. âSo whatâs the motive here?â
âI...â
âYou donât have one. And before you ask, the only reason I seem hostile is because Iâm giving your nasty little attitude right back to you.â Luke narrowed his eyes. You were rendered speechless, but your mind was consumed with many thoughts.
Well damn, he just read me harder than Bianca Del Rio... Ok Y/N, you have two options. You can run like a coward, leave the country on the first flight out of California, or just apologize. Wait, thatâs three things.
Luke was looking at you expectantly. You zoomed back in on the conversation, realizing you were just staring blankly back at him. Not a single word had been spoken for roughly ten seconds.
âAre you just gonna stand and stare at me, or are you gonna say something?â His voice was softer. His eyes flashed a look of concern, before staring you down again in frustration.
âI was thinking, you moron.â You replied, sounding almost unsure of the words coming from your lips. You had come to the conclusion that insults were the only way out of the metaphorical corner youâd backed yourself into.
You knew your last ditch effort had failed when Luke stepped closer to you, his infamous and somewhat irritating smirk plastered on his face. You scrunched your nose and knitted your brows together in an attempt to contrast his expression. His body was mere inches away from yours. You eyes went down, as did your defences. The tips of your shoes were touching his weathered vans. You looked back up to him, an unguarded innocence taking over your once cold-hearted facade.
âTell me what youâre thinking about. Iâll try not to judge you, I promise.â He offered. It felt like he was staring into your soul. You felt oddly compelled to obey the gentle command.
âI was thinking aboutââ you started. âNo. Iâm not going to tell you.â You caught yourself before you could reveal your previous thoughts. You shook your head at your naĂŻvetĂ©, while simultaneously in defiance of Lukeâs request.
âThatâs alright angel,â confidence was practically flowing from his mouth. âbecause I already know what youâre thinking.â
â
Aaand thatâs Part 4 all done! Itâs a bit short, but I had to leave you on a cliffhanger. I am about to start part 5, and i already gave you part 3 today, so consider this a little gift from me to you. ;) I feel bad for ending the chapters on such intense moments, but itâs also fun and it helps me start the next part a bit more easily. Anyway, let me know what you think!

Hereâs my masterlist!
â
I was sitting in class, tapping my pencil against my notebook, trying to stay awake as Mr. Wells droned on about how to calculate velocity. I could feel my eyelids become heavier, but as soon as my eyes closed, I was jolted away with a kick to my chair. I didnât even need to turn around to know the culprit was none other than Luke Patterson. Luke was the closest thing to a sworn enemy that a teenage girl could have. He and I were constantly at each otherâs throats over virtually anything. I didnât want to give him the satisfaction of knowing he had pissed me off, but I couldnât pass up an opportunity to pester him.
âWhat do you want, Patterson?â
âCalm down, angel, no need to get your panties in a twist.â
âDonât call me that!â
âThen donât put your chair in the way of my leg.â
âThat doesnât even make se-â I stopped myself as I noticed someone beside me. Mr. Wells handed me the yellow slip of paper, something I knew all too well: getting detention. As per most of Luke and Iâs spats, he too got a detention slip, causing me to groan in annoyance as I turned back to face the board.
âLooks like weâll be seeing more of each other. See you at 3.â I just knew he was trying to conceal a smirk, but obviously failed when he let out a small chuckle. I reached my arm out behind me, flicking the assholeâs forehead.
âFuck off. Also, get a shirt with sleeves, would you?â I whisper-shouted.
âBut why would I do that when you acknowledge my rockinâ bod?â He emphasized his words, leaning closer as I leaned back a bit, turning my head to glare at him.
âGet over yourself, Patterson. I didnât acknowledge anything other than the fact that youâre allergic to normal shirts and that you have arms just like everyone else in this classroom.â
âOk but if I go into anaphylactic shock, Iâm blaming you.â
âPromise?â I say coolly. This guy is a piece of work, if anything. After about 10 agonizing minutes of class, the bell rang. I swiftly got up from my seat and headed to my locker.
âAngel, wait up!â I heard Lukeâs voice call out behind me. As usual, I ignored him and kept walking until I got to my locker.
As I had finished putting in the combination and began opening the locker door, a hand slams it shut. I look up at Luke, who seemed quite pleased with himself as I let out a huff. I began rotating the dial on the lock once again, still feeling his gaze burning into me.
âItâs not nice to ignore people.â Luke crossed his arms dramatically, making a sad face. I rolled my eyes as I put my physics textbook away.
âYeah, well itâs not nice to call someone nicknames they donât want!â
âOh come on, you know you like it! Besides, how could I not call you exactly what you are when you act like that?â He had that stupid, childish grin plastered on his face again. I often imagine slapping that smirk right off his face.
âYouâre so fucking annoying, oh my god.â I stated, closing my locker with hip, beginning to head towards the cafeteria. I couldnât wait to see my friends, Carrie, Flynn, and Julie. They always knew how to take my mind off whatever bullshit Luke subjected me to.
âI know youâre smiling!â Luke called out after me. He was right, but Iâd rather drop dead than let him know that. I wasnât smiling because of him, but rather because of my ability to get under someoneâs skin. I knew Luke and I shared that desire, to be able to have an effect on people. In our case, it just happened to be through pissing one another off. I turn the corner and scan the cafeteria to make sure our usual spot was available. I made my way over to Julie, who was currently the only one at the table.
âHey Jules! Howâs your day going?â I smile as I sit across from her, setting my backpack down beside my seat.
âItâs going pretty well! I actually have some news to share with everyone!â Julie beamed as she took another bite of her sandwich. I opened my bag to get my lunch which consisted of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, water, and a granola bar.
âWell where are Carrie and Flynn? I wanna hear the news!â I exclaimed.
âThey got in line for calzones a few minutes ago so they should be coming back any minute,â I took a sip of water. âOh here they come!â I turned to see Carrie and Flynn walking in sync with their lunch trays.
âOh good, Y/Nâs here! Now we can hear Julieâs news!â Flynn sat down next to Julie and Carrie sat beside me.
âOk girl, spill!â Carrie let out a shrieking noise in excitement.
âAlright, alright. Drum roll please,â Flynn, Carrie, and I all drummed on the table, watching Julie for our cue to stop. She moved her hands to signify cutting us off, like a conductor. âIâm in a band!â She was smiling so wide.
âOh my god thatâs amazing Julie!â Flynn gasped.
âWhen did that happen?â Carrie asked.
âIâm so happy for you!â I added.
âThanks guys, it really means a lot that you support me. I donât want to give away too many of the details right away, so if you want to meet the band, 4:30, my house?â Julie suggested, casually inviting us over.
âShit, I donât know if I can,â I groaned once I realized. âI got detention today.â The girls knew I was a bit of a troublemaker, so this wasnât too shocking to them. It took Carrie a while to get used to my schemes and their consequences, but she eventually learned to expect the worst, so that the actual outcome seemed less intense.
âOf course you do!â Flynn laughed, the rest of us joining in.
âI mean itâs at 3, so if I behave myself, I might be able to make it for 4.â I explained, as I looked at my nails. The black polish was a few days old, but they still looked pretty good. When I looked up, my friendw were glaring at me with slight frowns appearing on their faces.
âGreat, so weâll just never see you again?â Julie said sarcastically. We all shared a laugh at her comment.
âI canât make any promises, but I will try my best. Might not be easy though. Iâm stuck with Patterson today.â I rolled my eyes, disgust lacing my voice as the last name of my nemesis left my mouth.
âFor as ofteh as you two hang out, Iâm surprised youâre not friends,â Carrie began, bur paused for dramatic effect. âOr more!â My other two friends joined in with sing-songy voices. It was a running gag that theyâd kept since the 7th grade, despite my incessant complaints against it.
âIâm gonna ignore that because I love you, but donât be surprised if you see me whacking your mailboxes like piñatas.â I leaned back, folding my arms and raising my eyebrows as if to say âyour moveâ. I was obviously joking, but that didnât stop the three girls from sharing wide-eyed glances with one another.
âOk letâs get back to the fact that Julie is in a band! Please tell me you need a manager!â Flynn looked at Julie with puppy dog eyes and pouting her bottom lip.
âAnd if you need costumes for performances, I can hook you up with some threads, or I could make some for you!â Carrie offered, her eyes practically sparkling with excitement. She had been sketching designs and sewing costumes for dirty candy, and she was hoping to branch out to other types of styles.
âI have nothing to offer, sorry Jules.â I shrugged. I had never really had one thing I was passionate about or really good at, so I basically made getting into trouble my pastime.
âOh donât be so modest Y/N! Just come hear us play and let your imagination guide you!â Julie reached out across the table, and took my hand in hers. She gave it a comforting squeeze.
âThanks, I promise Iâll try to make it as soon as possible.â I say, reassuring everyone with a smile.
â
Before I knew it, the final bell rang. I walked out of the music room and made my way to Mr. Wellsâs room for detention. I had to stop at my locker first, but luckily it was en route to the room. As I turned the corner to the hallway where my locker was, I saw Luke at his locker, staring down at his phone. I was hoping to walk past him without confrontation, but with my luck, that didnât happen.
âY/N!â Luke called after me, practically bouncing as he followed closely behind me, leaning against a random locker next to my own.
âDonât you have something better to do, Patterson?â I asked.
âSomething better than spending time with my least favorite person? Of course not!â He reciprocated the annoyance. Luke usually played nice when we interacted, so his tone threw me off guard a bit. I closed my locker and turned to face him, trying my best not to stare at his flexed bicep as it was propped up against the locker, supporting his head. I had clearly failed at avoiding his muscles, because he cleared his throat, pulling my gaze away from his arm.
âLike what you see, angel?â
âYou wish.â I retorted, causing his smirk to disappear. I began to walk towards the classroom, Luke following after. As we walked into the physics room, I quickly observed that all the desks were empty. I groaned at the realization that Iâd be alone with Luke for a whole hour. I took my usual seat, Luke doing the same. Mr. Wells got up from his chair and stood at the front of the room.
âNormally Iâd make you be quiet, or have you use this time to work on any assignments you have, but I have a migraine and I cannot stand being in this room another second. Iâm letting you off the hook this time, but you will come here at 3pm next Thursday to make up for it.â I nodded at the teacher, who was pressing his fingers against his temples to soothe his headache.
âThanks Mr. Wells! Have a good afternoon!â I said, grabbing my bag and all but zooming out of the room. I couldnât wait to get to Julieâs. I pulled my phone out of my back pocket and put my ear buds in. I shuffled my playlist for the month of October and kept walking. It wasnât until I had reached the exit that Iâd been reminded that Luke also got to leave detention. His hand was above my head as he pushed open the door for me.
âWhat, are you expecting a thank you? âCause youâre not getting one,â I said, not turning to face him. âAlso, I can open a door myself, thank you very much.â
âYouâre welcome.â I stopped in my tracks, mentally cursing for my choice of words, as I had contradicted myself.
âThatâs not what I meant, dickhead.â
âI know. And hey, thatâs not very nice!â Lukeâs footsteps picked up their pace to catch up with me. I put my ear bud back in, trying to ignore the presence of Luke, who was very hard to ignore.
âWhat gave you the impression that I was nice?â I retorted, trying to walk faster, but barely managing to do so because apparently Luke took big steps.
âFair point.â Luke replied plainly. I decided to give up on trying to out-walk him, because clearly it wasnât working.
âIs there a particular reason youâre following me, or is this just a new hobby of yours?â I said, walking backwards to face him.
âI could ask you the same thing,â his words coming out with a laugh. âI know for a fact this isnât the way to your house.â
âOf course youâd know that, stalker.â I said, going to turn back around. As I did so, my foot hit a raised part of the sidewalk. I knew I was gonna fall, so I attempted to reduce the impact. Before my body hit the concrete, I felt a grip on my upper arm, followed by a grip on the other one. I opened my eyes as Luke had steadied me. I almost thought I saw his expression go from concerned to relief, but I shrugged off his furrowed brows being due to the sun in his eyes.
âIâm fine.â I grumbled, continuing to walk.
âWasnât gonna ask, but glad to hear it.â Luke replied sarcastically, placing a hand on my shoulder. I cocked an eyebrow at him, glancing down at my shoulder and back up into his eyes, noting that his irises were hazel, but with more green than brown.
âIf you donât remove your hand in five secondsââ I warned him, but before I could finish my sentence he had already taken his hand away, shoving it back into the pocket of his jeans. âThank you.â
âOh so you thank me for that, but not for saving your life?â
âI wouldâve been perfectly fine with hitting the ground. At least then Iâd get a break from being near you.â
âYour little âeepâ said otherwise, but alright.â He mimicked the noise I had made as I tripped. I thought it was quiet enough to go unnoticed, but I then remembered that only I could hear the music in my earbuds.
âYou heard nothing.â I said dryly. The walk to Julieâs house was taking longer than I remember. I looked at my surroundings to make sure I was still headed the right way. I mentally sighed in relief when I realized I was right on track and didnât subconciously follow Luke home. My mind had begun wandering, questioning where Lukeâs house was, considering he was able to walk home from school. My thoughts were quickly interrupted by the sound of his voice.
âBack to what I was saying, where exactly are you going?â He tilted his head to the side, which made his hair follow. I mustâve let a smile come across my lips, because he looked at me with a grin that was half dumbfounded and surprised, and half joyful and child-like.
âNone of your business.â
âCome on, tell me!â He dragged out the vowels of his sentence. I was tempted to tell him just to get him to shut up, but I didnât want to give him that satisfaction.
âNo. Do you see me asking you where youâre going?â
âI mean if you were to ask, Iâd tell you,â he said with a lopsided grin.
âGood thing Iâm not gonna ask, Luke.â
âI think thatâs the first time youâve used my actual name.â He placed his hand on my shoulder and looked to me with an exaggerated look of surprise. He quickly realized his mistake and removed his hand from my shoulder, mumbling a quick apology.
âDonât get used to it. I was just too busy not caring.â
âIf you tell me where youâre going Iâll stop bugging you.â He blurted out, causing me to look up at him, his lips closed, curved upwards.
âFine. I wouldâve preferred it if you said that earlier, but itâs as good a time as any I guess,â I remarked. âIâm going to Julie Molinaâs house.â
âWait, seriously?â He sounded shocked, as if he didnât know that Julie and I were friends.
âUm, yeah?â I responded, confused. âShe invited me over to watch her rehearse with her new band.â
âThatâs cool! What band?â Why was he suddenly so interested in what I had to say?
âI have no idea, hence why Iâm going over there and watching them rehearse.â
âAh, gotcha.â Luke nodded his head.
âOkay, I held up my end of the bargain, time to wrap it up. AdĂos!â I waved to him, expecting him to cross the street or something.
âAbout that...â
â

Los Angeles, 2020
The sun was setting down behind the horizon, the golden rays reflecting onto the crystal water of the pier. A warm breeze blew through her hair, loose strands falling on each side of her face, which arbored a nostalgic smile.
Her feet were dipped into the cold water from the ocean, the waves crashing onto the shore, but the sound brought a sense of calmness to her mind.
Twenty-five years. It has been twenty-five years since Y/n had last come up to the pier, the memories of her friends too numerous to handle at the same time. But it was their spot, and she could still vividly imagine Luke with his acoustic guitar or Alex tapping his thighs to make a beat while Reggie and Bobby sung together. As for herself, she always sat down on the sand, watching with proud eyes her four best friends messing around.
She remembered the day she had first met them through Alex, her twin brother older by twenty minutes. And she remembered when her eyes landed on Luke and colours started to flood her vision, suddenly highlighting her world. Alex had been mad for a couple weeks, wondering why on Earth his sister and his best friend had to be soulmates, but he quickly changed his mind after a long conversation with Luke and Y/n.
She was fifteen, when she discovered Luke was her soulmate. And she was seventeen when she lost him.
