Getting a New Puppy?
Here are some basic instructions on taking care of your New Puppy.
1. Find A Good Local Veterinarian.
The first place you and your new puppy should go together is to the vet for a checkup. This visit will not only alert you that your puppy is healthy and free of serious health issues or birth defects but, it will allow you to take the first steps toward a good preventive health routine.
2. Make The Most Of Your First Vet Visit
Ask your vet which puppy foods they recommend, how often to feed, and the amount of portion size to give your pup.
A. Set up a schedule to vaccinate your puppy at the correct time.
B. Ask about options for controlling parasites, both external and internal.
C. Find out which signs of illness to watch for during your puppy’s first few months.
D. If not want to breed your puppy. Ask about neutering or spaying.
3. Shop for Quality Food.
Your puppy’s growth depends on the nutrition you provide at a young age. Since they need more vitamins than older dogs.
4. Establish a Bathroom Schedule
One thing to know right from the beginning is that puppies are babies and they do not wear any diapers. So that means they will make accidents in the house. So, patience is needed with careful planning with constant reinforcement. Knowing that your new family member is a baby and learning.
Start looking to invest in some carpet or rug cleaning. Try to avoid having your puppy socialize with any other animal UNTIL you have vaccinated him or her. Reinforce your puppy every time he uses the potty outdoors. Always a good practice is ‘one word' of reinforcement to allow your puppy to assimilate and start understanding what you are doing.
5. Watch for any signs of illness
In the first couple of months, puppies are more susceptible to illnesses since they are babies themselves. Observe them carefully as they are not a toy to just leave around.
6. Instruct to be obedient.
By teaching your puppy early on, you’ll set your puppy up for a life of positive social interaction. In addition, obedience training will help forge a stronger bond between you and your puppy. Remember dogs are pack animals. They will follow the alpha of the pack. Guess who that is?
When teaching your puppy, one rule of thumb is ‘One word for ‘One Command’ and your puppy will start picking up different words for each command instructed.
The great time to start training your puppy is between 4 months to 6 months.
Tip: Make it happy for your puppy to learn.
Be positive and reinforce after each command with any treats or, affection. Like patting him or her and saying positive words to your puppy.
Remember!
Patience, time, and dedication are needed when getting a new puppy but, the rewards will far exceed any trouble you may encounter. Love your new family member and your new puppy will always be loyal to the end.
