Reasons Why Retail Jobs are Harder than Office Jobs.

And yet people don’t think retail workers should get a living wage. I’ve literally gotten a five cent raise myself.

Gotta laugh to keep from crying. I’ve gotten a 5 cent raise and it sucked. I got a 3 dollar raise last year after having been at my job for 5 years then received a 67 cent raise a couple months after. Retail and food service industry folk work so damn hard and have to kiss so much ass of entitled people.

Retail workers absolutely deserve a living wage.  Absolutely.  And it is WAY more demanding and horrible than an Office Job.

CHANGE THE SYSTEM.

But Office Jobs are still an untenable way to live. You’re still working a lot of overtime, but you don’t get paid for it because you’re “salary”.  It’s supposed to balance out with days you don’t need to work as hard or as long because your work is done.  Except it is NEVER DONE.  Someone will always find something for you to do even if it’s busy work that doesn’t matter like cleaning out everyone’s file structure. But if it goes terribly wrong you’ll delete the entire depot.  

Want to take a sick day? Live with your supervisor giving you stink eye for taking more than one day off even if you ARE contagious.  Maybe work from home instead? Either use a company laptop or allow them to install spyware on your home computer to ensure you’re working.  Check your facebook or buy some christimas presents on Amazon for your fam?  Now they can say you’re just not working hard enough next time you fight back against having to stay late every night for a week.  

You still have that stupid coworker who is unconcerned with getting any shit done.  and you still have to clean up after him or you’ll get in trouble. And when he gets moved to a supervisor position and gets a $20,000 pay raise while you get a 4% “cost of living adjustment” year after year you’ll find it is really, really damaging to your moral and ability to juggle these demands.

So you’re still living with a lot of the trauma you had when working retail and on top of that the fear that you will accidentally destroy everything.  And while you’re finally making enough money to survive, you probably still don’t have the money to buy a house and you’re still living mostly paycheck to paycheck.

you work 60-70 hour work weeks for no over time pay and while you can afford that trip to hawaii for a week, you’re still unable to really LIVE and enjoy your life.  You are still existing ONLY TO WORK. 

There’s no job in the US that is not stressful to the point of breaking a person by design.  Office jobs are a different kind of suck but they still suck really bad. They will break you down.  Don’t think they will save you.

I’m really sorry that misogyny has made you believe that women are only supposed to have kids, take care of the house, and maybe be allowed to have a couple “acceptable” hobbies.

Women are allowed to enjoy things for the rest of their lives and that includes continuing to be in fandom, a space they intially carved for themselves and other adults.
