Deep down inside, Brooks knew it couldn’t be as easy for his mother as it appeared to be, but in a way he was kind of relieved to see her pain, though he felt guilty as hell for provoking this kind of reaction. The fact that everyone seemed to have moved on, while a sad, empty feeling continued to linger in his chest, had made him feel very lonely, which is why he didn’t want to dance around it any longer. Tears welled up in the boy’s eyes as he continued. “What decisions? You and Margaret decided you wanted a divorce. I didn’t, but I have to deal with the shitty consequences regardless!” he countered, raising his voice a little higher than she did. “Well, you didn’t even try stop her! You just let her go!” It wasn’t fair to blame her for that, but the boy was far too upset to be reasonable. “Maybe that is what I want! Maybe.. Maybe I want you to be upset! Because everyone is just like, moving on with their lives, pretending to be perfectly okay with everything, and no one wants to acknowledge the pink elephant in the room, and that is that it’s bullshit to stop loving each other after twenty-plus years of being together. And it’s also bullshit to move to a different country so you can bang some young slut! Why can’t I say these things out loud? I’m sure I can’t be the only one who feels this way! It hurts, okay? It hurts like hell and I’m not going to fake being fucking fine with this anymore!” Brooks inhaled and exhaled deeply after his rant, a pang of guilt hitting his chest once again when he noticed the defeated expression on his mother’s face. “Mom…” he spoke softly, biting his teeth down on his lower lip as he realized he might have pushed it too far. “I’m sorry… I just… I need you both. Together… Please.”
seeing tears well up in her son’s eyes, cindy’s heart clenched. seeing brooks hurt like that hurt even more than the pain she felt from all the drama happening in their family. she shook her head, “i didn’t want her to go. i would’ve stopped her if i could, i promise you, but she’s an adult and she makes her own decisions and i can’t control that.” she listened to him rant, tears welling up in her eyes. she didn’t want this. she didn’t want brooks to feel this way and she wished she didn’t feel what she was feeling either. all she wanted was for her kids to be happy- and it was obvious that they weren’t. brooks definitely wasn’t. she bit her bottom lip for a second, a tear slipping down her cheek, before replying, “i am upset. i’m really upset, brooks. this is hard. this wasn’t what i wanted. the divorce? yeah, that was overdue. but this? you being hurt? your sisters being hurt? your mom moving away and moving on so quick? none of that is what i wanted. and i’ll always love your mom- that doesn’t just go away. but this hurts. and being on the island hurts more than i thought it would. none of this is easy. i’m just- ignoring it makes it seem like it’s not real.” she paused, wiping her tears away with the back of her hand, even though it was no use since she was pretty much full-on crying now, “it’s not all perfect!” she threw her hands up in the air, a humorless laugh leaving her lips, “it’s not! but there’s nothing i can do about it and i don’t want you to feel like you have to worry about me because my job is to worry about you and make sure you’re doing ok- which you obviously aren’t." she paused again, letting out a shaky breath to calm herself down, "you’re my first priority. nothing else matters. i want you to be able to talk about it if that’s what’ll help you. i don’t want you to fake anything. and i need you to know that i’m here for you. i’m not goin’ anywhere.” she stepped forward, pulling brooks into a tight hug, “brooks, it’s ok. don’t apologize. i’m not upset with you. i wish i could make that happen for you, but i-i can’t. i’m sorry that i can’t make this better for you. you know i would do anything possible for you, but us getting back together isn’t possible. tell me what else i can do for you. please.”
