Okay, so.. I'm confused.

Are the tuffs on Alastor's head his hair, or his ears? I've seen a lot of people portray them as ears, but Viv (or Ashley) stated in one of the HuniCasts that those are just tuffs of hair.

Another reason why Alastor's design isn't the best.

I think I know why they chose do this. Animal ears are a primary form of expression in animation. Husks’s ears move constantly to show what he’s feeling. If Alastor had deer ears, they’d be one more thing he’d have to control to keep his emotion hidden. So when he slips up and lets it show on his face what he’s really thinking or feeling, the ears would make it more obvious. I still don’t think it was a good idea. I love Alastors design but this just makes it worse. But I think this is why this decision was made.

Things I want to see from Alastor now that I know a thing or two about Voodoo

Alastor performing rituals to heal or protect other characters. Or to protect the Hotel itself.

Alastor slipping authentic voodoo dolls into the pockets of people he likes to bring them good luck.

Alastor preparing remedy for someone who’s sick. 

A flashback of Alastor's mother teaching a very young Alastor about veves, the lwa (spirits) they represent and Bondyé

A scene showing that Alastor's ties to Voodoo are completely separate from whatever dark magic he uses. Because that's not what Voodoo is. It's a religion and it’s practices are done to bring good to people lives.

I may have gotten some things wrong or gotten parts of Haitian vodou and Louisiana voodoo mixed up. If you see a mistake, please correct me but, the jest of this is that I want Alastor’s Voodoo to be represented in a positive way and show the good side of this morally grey character. 

I love this character so much. But after reading this really good article about the portrayal of voodoo through Alastor and in media as a whole (link is here https://medium.com/@galemalio/mindful-consumption-of-hazbin-hotels-vodoo-content-eddedd2bb42a please read it ) and I looked into it myself, I think the way voodoo was portrayed in the pilot was a cockup. Showing Hollywood voodoo, instead of actual voodoo. I have doubts this was intentional because voodoo has been portrayed like this since forever and Alastor is Viv’s baby. One of her favourites out the 100+ characters she’s created and one she’s been developing for years. I doubt she would have left anything out when writing his character, especially when she’s worked on him for so long. But even if Viv and her writing team intend go deeper into Alastor’s connection to voodoo and show it with accuracy in later episodes, or in Alastor’s comic that’s going to be released soon, this was not a good start. But we’re still only at the pilot, so it’s not too late to turn this mess around.

I love Hazbin Hotel and I love Alastor but I highly recommend people read this. It's thoughtful, well written and goes all out in explaining what vodou is, how the way voudou is portrayed in media is false and how this can be harmful the people who practice it. Thought I'd post this little update because after going this long without posting anything, you all probably think I'm dead again. Basically, I spent most of the last month cramming it to get this job finished before Christmas and before I went on holiday and I didn't have much time for anything else. So that's where I've been all this time. And now, I'm on holiday in the same place I was last year. Where there is barely any internet or phone service anywhere and none at all in the place where I'm staying. So there'll probably won't be any more posts until I come back. I’ll be online if I'm somewhere with free wi-fi but I don't know if I'll be able to post anything. Hope you all had a good Christmas.
