Something Like a Glitch

Glowing red lines similar to the ones on transistors travel up her neck when she's using her powers and her eyes glow red. Her outfit consists black body armor with red highlights. It's equipped with a hood and her mouth is covered by a red bandana.

BIOGRAPHY.

A result of an experiment trying to make humanity immortal and bestow upon them the power to travel and converse as fast as light Julchen ended up being somewhat of a glitch after things didn't work out like they were supposed to. She gained strange abilities to weave in and out of technology and an existence half between computer and human. During WWII she fought on the side of GUARD when in the midst of the war an experiment was performed on her sister, Kon, in an attempt to enhance her abilities. It ended up backfiring, causing the surrounding area to explode. Julchen rushed in last minute to try and save her sister because she was practically just tech. Nothing could hurt her, right?

Unfortunately she became trapped in the pod that Kon had been in when the experiments were being performed. Her sister was asleep, and she was stuck with her, so for decades they both were trapped inside the pod. Julchen fell into a pseudo sleep until eventually she managed to wake Kon up, and together they escaped.

Soon after they found GUARD again and picked up the hero work once more.

The voice made him jump. He didn’t scream or anything, but he jumped, and as he swirled around to face the woman before him, stood in the middle of his morgue, he cried out, “what are you doing in my morgue?!”

It was more so out of defence- and maybe shock- but he made sure he hid the emotions well on his face.

At the remark, he frowned more so, as some sort of attempt at rebelling. Not that he was fantastic at rebelling, he just looked extremely moody, “I don’t smile, I don’t have a reason to.”

In response to the wink, however, he had to look away; now that kind of interaction was definitely something he was foreign to. So…what he wouldn’t allow himself to see wouldn’t bother him, right?

“Then maybe you need to find one,” She held out her hand and smiled genuinely, “Why don’t you come join me for a walk or something? It’ll be good for you to get out.”

She noted how he turned away which was actually kind of amusing. She’d been kidding, of course, but it seemed like he’d taken it seriously. Oh well!

“Go out? You mean into the world?” He replied, raising an eyebrow, “too scary, I think I should return to my morgue. It’s nice and cold there.”

He turned on his heel, beginning to leave. He couldn’t help the slight panic rising in his chest, though, as he was certain she would come and drag him out. Although, he supposed going outside wouldn’t hurt him…

“Really?” She didn’t exactly grab him and pull him out into the great outdoors, but she didn’t just leave either.

Trailing after him she frowned, “If you never try anything you’re scared of you’ll never get anywhere in life. If you’re really too anxious I don’t want to drag you out and give you a panic attack, but hey-” She stopped and put her hands on her hips, “Gotta man up one day or another. May as well be today.”

He sighed, watching her carefully, “I won’t have a panic attack, don’t worry, but will myself leaving the morgue please you?”

Because in all honesty, it seemed letting her have her fun would benefit him more than declining her of it. He then added, under his breath, “and I’m man enough as it is….”

“Yes, it will,” She snickered and offered him her hand, “Come on! It’ll be fun. We can go visit the bakery or something. It’s unhealthy to stay caged up in a musty place full of dead people like you are right now.”

She’d help him see that the world was one big treasure hold ready for exploring. It was best to make use of every second you had now or else life would pass by in the blink of an eye bringing regret along with it. He’d see in time.

He’d never really had many people show him kindness.

Because I need friends. She shook the internal voice off and gently took his hand tugging him forward, “Because I don’t think you should rot away in there, annnnd-” She laughed a little, her tone joking, “I’m just a nice gal.”

Haha. She wasn’t so lonely that she had to sneak around the morgue to find company. Well, okay. Maybe just a little.

It’s not the carving itself, but the type of wood. It’s very fragile. I could have hand carved the design, but it was more expensive than he was willing to pay. If I machine-cut that type of wood, it catches fire.

Makes sense. [still seems amused] So when you tried to explain it to him he just refused to listen or?

He never let me explain. I started to tell him I couldn’t and he just kept going on and on about how some other carpenter could and blah blah- [gestures] eventually I told him to go to that other carpenter then, because apparently that other carpenter can defy the laws of physics and he got mad. He said [imitating his voice] that one is too expensive. I told him defying the laws of physics should be expensive, but I can’t do it. He stormed out.

[whistles] Damn. Teach me how to be that savage. That’s amazing. [a shake of her head and a disbelieving smile] You really told him off. Impressive.

Do you normally get a lot of people like that?

[raises eyebrow] you think that was savage? I didn’t beat the guy or anything. I just told him to leave… I thought I was being pretty nice, honestly. I mean, he yelled in my face. I could’ve been bad, but I just told him to get out.

[shakes his head no] most of my customers are locals. I know them well. They’re neighborly. There’s the occasional asshole, though.

Grinning she turned and faced the other woman and tipped her hat, “I’m the conductor, so I’d hope I’d know,” She grinned and winked jokingly, “What specifically did you want to know? Or just… you know, in general how it works?”

“Oh” she gulped, “that sounds bad. I’m glad the tracks are there, then.” She hummed for a moment, trying to think of another question, “What do you like best about your job?” she suddenly asked, almost making this like an interview.

“Announcing and watching the world glide by,” Julchen answered without a moment’s hesitation, “It’s a wonder to see the scenery blur past, especially with all the diverse sorts of places Gramina has to offer. One day you should come aboard! I could even let you ride up in the engine with me.” She shot her a wink and smiled, happy to be able to help someone understand more about her work and passion.

Marianne nodded vehemently, “I’d love that! In exchange, you should come over to Agatha’s house. I’ll cook for you!”

She tapped her chin, “I understand watching the world go by, but announcing, you said? Like telling people when to get off the bus? but on a train?” She tilted her head, “you enjoy that? it’s rather loud.”

“Oh, Liebling, you don’t have to!” Julchen laughed and shook her head, “But hey, if you’re offering free food I’m not turning you down. You seem like the type who knows their way around the kitchen.”

With a smile she shrugged noncommitally, “What can I say? I’m a loud kinda person, and it’s fun to do the announcer voice! How about you? What do you do?”

“I love to cook. Come by anytime- well, any time that you call ahead. Agatha doesn’t particularly like random visitors.” She gave a small blush and a shrug.

“Well…” Marianne gave a small sigh. “Technically I fish, but I really don’t like the ocean and the river fish are too small to sell most often. Feliciano is helping me learn to write, though. I want to write a book. In the meantime, I just- I help out where I can, I guess.”

He just got the phone and thus had a little bit of trouble with remembering his new number. Shortly after he looks up Schatz and immediately he returns to being a beet red mess of a person. 

He stays with her in the cabin of the train for several more house, talking on an off about various random topics. He had not yet had that much time to grow close with anyone in his new life until now and welcomed the intimacy as much as his closed off heart could. Before he knew it, it had gotten dark and her shift was over. 

“Can…I take you up on that whole….walking you home stuff…?”

Someone’s speaking to her? Blinking over at him she takes a moment to process. Oh! Oh, of course, of course. Silly her. With a shake of her head she smiles and offers him her arm, “Sure! Two is always better than one!”

Today is a good day. Much better than expected.

Once they were out she bumped him with her hip, smiling for no apparent reason, “Loosen up! You look nervous. I won’t bite.”

He doesn’t smile often.

Her heart skips a beat, and her smile softens. Grinning she takes a deep breath as well before sliding her arm down and lacing her fingers through his. She’s not screaming on the inside. This is totally normal friend stuff. She has no idea what you’re talking about.

[Char, having lost his way in the train station accidentally finds himself wandering into the break-room] [Looks around nervously] Hello...? Anyone here...? Where am I????

[is currently sitting and sipping her coffee while staring intensely at her phone bc she will finish this level-] [hears the door open and… wtf] [this is employees only] [annnd her character dies] [wowwwww]

[slowly shuts off her phone] Dude, you do realize this is employees only, right?

“Nice, nice! Living minimalist life, I see,” She smiles and nods, “Kinda like one of those tiny homes, yeah?”

“…Yeah, something like that. I think it has like, three rooms or something…I haven’t spent much time there.”

He takes a moment to stare out of the train’s window. “Do you ever…sleep in a train sometimes?”

“I have before,” She grins and watches him as she speaks, “Never when I’m actually supposed to be working, but I’ve done it when training and long trips. When you’re the conductor on a really long trip- like a couple days long- you hafta sleep on the train. Time doesn’t stop for you even when you’re the conductor.”

“…Where would you…like, do that though…” He looks up and down the small room that he shared with her. “…do you get your own room, or are you in here, all the time?” He mumbles out of the window, so that she can’t hear him. “I would feel bad if you had to sleep in here all of the time…it’s uncomfortable.”

“Pff, no!” She laughs and waves a hand, “I don’t sleep on the Gramina Train or in here. There’s usually a little room with a bed and stuff, but my route here is just a daily thing. Train stops at night, and I go home.”

She nudges him playfully, “You’re too sweet. It’s good to know you care.” Her tone is joking, but she does mean it. Even though they’d only known each other for a short while some semblance of concern is nice. It’s good to know people still care.

He didn’t notice that before, but he seemed to give more care than he normally afforded. He looks flustered when she bumps him again drawing his knees up to his chin. “Does the train stop near your house…?” Despite his forced monotonous voice, his expression looked as though it cared.

“Somewhat close,” She nods in response, smiling at him without really meaning to, “Did you want to come stop by sometime? I ought to cook for you.” And with that she laughs again but a bit more softly this time around shaking her head, “Besides, company is always nice.”

He nods. “That sounds…really nice.” He relaxes his shoulders and closes his eyes. The helm of the train was a really nice place. It was isolated, or it would be if he didn’t have such good company. “I can walk you home after work, if its dark….if you want…”

She brightens at the suggestion. Something in the back of her mind whispers about how romantic that would be, and flashbacks to high school fantasies pop up; strolling through the park arm in arm with some loved one, goodnight kisses beneath the lamplight, brushing hands as lovers part. She laughs internally because now that she thinks about it, she’s not so sure if she’s ever really grown out of that stage.

“That would be awesome. But only if you want! Don’t feel obligated.”

He asks himself in his head why he’s so nervous when asking her. It shouldn’t matter, nothing matters! Then why did he give so such a damn about this cute girl getting home alright….dammit. 

Admittedly, Char had been in a good number of relationships, before and after his parents died. But since his parents passed he came to the realization the most of his lovers, friends and family only cared about him because of his inheritance. 

He came to the conclusion that Chen’s ignorance about his situation was the reason he found her so charming. He could enjoy her company without worrying about any ulterior motives. And she was lovely company to boot. “It’s ok, I wanna make sure you’re ok, and stuff.”

“Aren’t you a gentleman, hm, Schatz?” She laughs softly and winks. It’s a refreshing change to be around someone caring for someone they barely even know. It’s a nice reminder that good still existed in the world. Char was sweet, and it was refreshing.

She is absolutely killing him with these winks. It was honestly unhealthy. He’s going to die of embarrassment and its going to be her fault. “I-I just think that it’s a…you know…like, good thing to do…plus I don’t want you to be lonely.” Fuck. It slipped out of his mouth like a wet bar of soap. 

Despite his hot faced humiliation, he was (somewhere inside) having fun. He had difficulty remembering the last time (if ever) he met someone as genuine as her.

She stopped, opening her mouth to reply, but absolutely no sound came out. Closing it quickly to avoid looking like a complete idiot she reddened and waved a hand, “Lonely, psh-! I’ve got… Well! Being alone is fun. It’s really great you know?”

And with a laugh she added, “Totally one of my favorites ways to spend my free time.” In all reality, one of the only ways she spent her free time. Haha. Rest in peace her.

He looks confused. The blush and the awkward pausing indicated that she was embarrassed, but it really didn’t seem to register. “You’re, uhm…a really nice girl. You shouldn’t have to be alone…unless you really want to…” He wrongs his hands out in his lap. God this flirting thing was so much harder when the existential void literally dominates your thoughts day and night. “You can always hit me…up…you know?”

"Well, Schatz, you got a phone number? I'm always more than willing to hit people or have some company around," She grins, the twinkle in her eye making it obvious she's teasing, "But! This is our first stop."

She goes back to the controls and makes the announcement, glancing toward him intermittently. This is nice. She could get used to this.
