Okay!! So I have gotten a couple of requests for a tutorial on how I do holograms and screens in the webcomic Cyberbunk. I was going to make a video, but unfortunately, I’ve caught a bad cough. So, images it is! This is all done in Photoshop CS6, but it can work in most art programs. 

1) Here we have the panels, minus MacGuffin and holoscreens. 

2) And here are the normally colored MacGuffins, as if he was a normal alive person. 

3) We begin by color replacing the lineart. I’ve scribbled in the dark blue color I’ve been using. 

4) I made this static image all the way back at the beginning of the comic. It’s darkened considerably for this particular use of it. 

5) Paste the static into the MacGuffin art. Make sure it fills the lineart! 

6) Now set the layer the static is on to “Color Dodge”. Looking good, but not quite finished. 

7) Create a screen layer and fill in the MacGuffins with a slightly lighter blue color. I’ve scribbled in the one I use. After this, flatten all of the layers together, and you now have transparent ghost MacGuffins! 

8) MacGuffins placed. In order to do this, the background must be on a separate layer than the characters. I set the opacity for these MacGuffins to 90%, to make them see-through.  

9) These holoscreens are provided by artist theamat. The process is simpler - the lineart is white, with a solid red fill. 

10) Set the holoscreen layers to screen mode. To finish off, I usually add some nice gradients in a separate screen layer.

THE PROGRESS BAR

Friday through Monday is all about the progress bar. Every Friday I ask Amanda (aka colorcomicsbadly): do we have a progress bar yet? She rolls her eyes and opens a long scroll that’s a mismatch of hand drawn roughs, smooth digital inks with a smattering of colored panels. The progress bar is how the three of us (Sam, Cynthia and Amanda) coordinate our progress through Cyberbunk’s two weekly episodes.

If you’re familiar with LINE Webtoon, then you’re familiar with their scrolling webcomic format (they’ve recently introduced a side scroll function too). It’s really a great way to read a webcomic on your phone or tablet. However, if you’ve only ever drawn standard western comic pages, it can be weird to get used to. So the Cyberbunk creative team felt like we needed training wheels to get us into the groove, and thus the progress bar was created.

As each of us finishes a portion of the episode, we drop it on its spot in the progress bar, and we get an idea of what’s left for us to do before the episode is done.

I almost always thumbnail my rough drafts because I need to see my story to tell it, and I’ll usually start roughing out panels on an 8x11 piece of paper (two panels a page), providing a vague panel design for the scroll throughout the week. After that, Cynthia ( theamat ) will start taking my roughs and playing with them until she’s found the direction she wants and heads to inks. Once done – Amanda colors, then letters the comic.

For us, deadlines are Sunday and Monday, so we try really hard (sorry Emily… *sigh*) to get the episode in on time and give LINE Webtoon the chance to set up the posts for the Tuesday and Wednesday updates of the comic.
