There are so many people out there walking around in suit jackets thinking they've got false pockets, when actually they're real pockets that are just basted shut so they don't sag in shipping, and nobody ever told them :(

Edit: And that little X of thread tacking the bottom of the vents together is meant to be taken out too. Occasionally I'll see someone wearing a coat that's still got them, and it pains me to not be able to just walk over and snip the threads for them.

There are jackets out there that do have false pockets, but also a heck ton that have real ones. Every brand of suit we carry at my work has real pockets that are basted shut. Sometimes it's very obvious white stitching that you can clearly see on the pocket lip, and sometimes it's completely hidden from the outside. You can usually still tell by pulling at the opening and seeing how long the stitches are.

Often the basting on the breast pockets will be invisible, but they'll have visible stitching under the pocket flaps lower down. On some of the sport coats they close the breast pocket with a chain stitch in something that resembles fine fishing line.

And if a pocket does turn out to be false, anyone with a few basic hand sewing skills and some fabric scraps can google some tutorials and stick a real pocket in there!
