Tell Jesus, the bitch is back
I’ll eventually catch up with #classictember but I have a handful of these to finish and you know what they say… a Gandalf a day keeps the Balrog away 😄
Some sneak peeks of a little something to come soon!
Happy Thursday people! ✨
The entire neighbourhood is part of his life I just 😭😭❤️❤️
Sometimes I want a villain redemption arc because I love the idea that no one is beyond the ability to turn themselves around and be better, and because a character got a raw deal and I’d love to see them offered compassion and given a chance to grow and change into the best version of themselves.
And sometimes I want a villain villainy-decay arc where they’re still an asshole, but now they basically just hang out with the good guys being a total gremlin while everyone tries to rehabilitate them enough to at least not stab anyone. Because I enjoy them and I find it hilarious.
Have we taken the time to appreciate how brilliant Katara is recently? She may not be the inventor of the family, but my goodness, this girl is all kinds of genius in her own right.
The Winter Solstice Part 2 might be one of my favorite examples of her awesome, outside-the-box thinking.
And I know, it's also an obvious display of Sokka's inventiveness (just look at this kid and his explosives)
but Sokka's idea to open the sanctuary doors doesn't work. It's cool and innovative, but it doesn't solve the problem they're facing.
Aang reacts... uh...
... well...
And Sokka tries to figure out what went wrong with his fake firebending technique (valid question, it was a smart thing to try)
But Katara is the real MVP here. While the others are focused on figuring out the flaws in the engineering attempt (Sokka), writing the mission off as a dangerous waste of time (Aang), or rolling over and admitting defeat (Shyu, my dude, you've got to be a bit more resilient than that if you're going to be a renegade Fire Sage), Katara remembers the bigger picture. Namely, the fact that there are angry Fire Sages on the way, and they still need to get the door open so they don't leave empty-handed. Yep, coming to Crescent Island was risky. Too late to worry about that, they're already on the island, and leaving without the information they came for (and very likely getting captured on their way out) isn't going to help things. Yeah, Sokka's explosives idea should have worked, but it didn't, and it doesn't matter why. What matters is getting the door open so Aang can get the information he needs.
And Katara, awesome, brilliant Katara, is the first to realize that they trick their enemies into doing what the Gaang needs and can't do themselves. She takes Sokka's failure and turns it on its head to use the enemies' strengths against them (sounds a bit like certain bending techniques, doesn't it?), and it works. Her inventive thinking takes every tool they have at their disposal, including the enemy Fire Sages, and puts them to use to accomplish their goals. And I think that's absolutely amazing of her.
Not to mention the fact that it displays a solid understanding of people and an ability to quickly understand and tackle complex problems that would have served her very well in later political aspirations y'know, if she'd chosen to pursue them.
lately I’ve been winning battles left and right, but even winners can get wounded in the fight
where did the southern raiders outfits for zuko and katara come from like yes they’re repurposed from when zuko was the blue spirit but do you think zuko was packing the day before black sun when he came across it and was like ‘in case I need to be emo and dramatic’ and then he packed a second one because like ‘in case I need to be emo and dramatic BUT with a friend’
Zuko, picking out five ninja suits at Stealth GAP: I wonder if Aang is wearing a medium yet...

every time I see the words “Tolkien ripoff” in reference to fantasy I laugh, because while there’s a lot of Tolkien ripoff in worldbuilding it almost never crops up in plot or theme or characterization
like
where are my stories about the decay of the world from the glory of days gone by?
where’s the motif of limb loss?
where’s the longing for the return of something worth following?
where are the bloodthirsty oaths that tear sanity to shreds?
where are the evil spirits who try and destroy the gods with steampunk V-1 buzz bombs (looking at you, The Lost Road)?
where’s my continent-wide dialectical shift ending in massive arguments over the proper pronunciation of a name? where’s my family drama centered around sparkly rocks? where are my dragons the size of mountain ranges?
Tolkienesque Fantasy™: there’s a quest, the elves are bitchy, the dwarves drink a lot, farm boy hero.
Tolkien’s Actual Writing: absolute power corrupts absolutely, a little bit of power corrupts a little, to what extent are people responsible for their actions? does God/the gods really answer our prayers? and pacifistic undertones.
@reeve-of-caerwyn @oldshrewsburyian
Also actual Tolkien: The world is full of hope even in dark times. Kindness and friendship are what heroes are made of. Absolutely do not fuck with nature or you will regret it.
Also actual Tolkien: actual heroes are little people who band together because it is right, and because they must.
Actual Tolkien: write your spouse into the story as an Actual Demigoddess whose song can charm even the Big Bad and the Keeper of the Dead themselves. Write your best friend into the story as a longwinded shaggy tree who takes hours to get to the fucking point.
