This image keeps appearing in my mind whenever I see locals going through the "BTS are good actually??" realisation since Arirang, so I had to make it.
"i think just life is fun and living is better" 🤍🥹
I appreciate him speaking about this so much. He's talked about these things a lot over the years, and explored them through music, but it's powerful to keep showing up with this level of vulnerability and not give in to easy platitudes. He demonstrates that you can be someone who struggles deeply with mental health, you might have issues that will never fully go away, but you can still make a good life for yourself and find good experiences.
It's sort of similar to chronic illness and disability in a way... it's really, really tough to confront and process the fact that certain struggles are going to be with you forever. But a life lived in pain can still be a life worth living. You need to find ways to focus on the good parts and search for what makes you happy. If you keep working on this mindset, keep reaching out for support, and keep looking for ways to express and process your pain, there will also be moments of joy and connection, moments of gentleness and calm, and there are a lot of interesting experiences that make it worth sticking around.
Always rooting for him, and everyone else out there who's struggling 💜
The whole concert was so beautiful, I was so happy... for some reason I cried when they sang I Need U in the encore... maybe because that's the first song which really started their rise, and that's when I was first super deep into being an ARMY, and it meant so much at the time for them to just win that one little music show prize... back then Bangtan and ARMY were in our small little corner, just dreaming and daring to wonder "what if?" even though it seemed impossible... Namjoon once described that journey as "mountain over mountain" because every time we thought we'd reached as high as we could, we'd stand at the peak and another, higher peak would be revealed ahead of us. Those higher peaks represented struggle, they towered over us fearsomely, but they also represented possibility, and somehow we all had the will to keep running forward without stopping... now more than 10 years later everything that's happened is just beyond belief, it all came flooding in when I heard that song. We lost them for so long, and I always had faith they would come back to us, but you can never be totally sure how life will turn out, can you? And now here they are, just as they always were, and also new, still growing, just as ARMY are growing with them. Old and new together in one moment, in the rain, smiling and laughing without thinking for a little while, 10s of 1000s in the stadium and millions worldwide, present and just breathing together.

I'm so obsessed with the 2.0 mv, I've wanted them to make something like that for years! It's lowkey reminding me of some of their 2014-15 era mvs which were more comedic, but a more grown up version. I'm really glad they decided to bring back that vibe!
I want to add a warning though:
You might have read that the mv is inspired by a film called Oldboy (2003), which is a legendary Korean thriller. A lot of people are now taking an interest in watching the film – and it is a very good film!
However please PLEASE be cautious. This is one of the most disturbing, brutal, triggering films out there, even if you're a grown adult you could find it too much. I watched it back in the day when I used to watch a lot of more extreme films, and there were still certain scenes I couldn't handle. Although I thought it was a great piece of art I probably won't ever watch it again. Please take care and don't put yourself through something you'll regret.
If you just want to see the main scene which inspired the mv you can watch it here – be warned this is still brutally violent and 18+ so only watch if you really want to! But this is actually mild compared to other scenes in the film!!
I'm going to put a brief list of content warnings for the whole film under a 'read more' here, some of these will give major spoilers, and this isn't everything:
if you want, you can have it all
i could spend a lifetime watching you

I don't know if this was already posted, but I just saw Tablo's IG story from after the Epikase interview with Namgi, and it's so touching! He really saw them from the beginning in their school uniforms, he saw their dingy little cockroach-infested back-street studio, he saw them go through everything until now, he was one of the few people they could turn to for advice, and he truly understands how important this all is 💜

I still don't know how to process all my feelings about Arirang, but I liked it a lot on first listen, and then it grew on me each time. The more I look at the lyrics the more I realise how clever and sharply worded they are, and how they fit the themes of Arirang in subtle ways. Also the way they used their voices in this album, the way they expressed the emotions and moods of the songs is really masterful, I'm so proud of how they've been able to push themselves to a new level.
I see a lot of people focusing on production (either loving or hating, though mostly loving it) but for me it's the members' vocal delivery that really makes this album special and sets it apart, and the lyrics which give it hidden depth that unfolds as you sit with the songs. The more I listen, the more I think this album will stand the test of time, and once the noise has died down it will be appreciated as a great piece of work by a lot of people.
While I really am seeing mostly positive reactions, when I look at the negative ones I'm struck by how contradictory and intense they are, "too this" or "too that" or "not enough this" etc. but all in opposite ways, and all so certain. It seems like everyone's trying to pull the album (and BTS) in every different direction at once, demanding as if it's owed to them. Since they all have different likes and dislikes, it would be impossible to please everyone.
It seems a lot of people allowed themselves to create a fantasy fanfic version of this album in their head before it was released, and then all they can hear is the contrast with their fantasy. Some people seemed to put this fantasy album on a pedestal where it has to represent everything and say everything and pour out every personal detail and it somehow has to fit every single person's preferences, and not be too much or too little of anything.
And in the meantime there is Arirang, the real album that exists, full of interesting thoughts, heartfelt emotions, sonic experimentation, pulling together nostalgic influences from early in their career with new sounds and perspectives. It contains so much, if people are willing to let go of their fantasies and actually listen.
It's funny how people are so worked up about this album... but you know why they care? It's because BTS is that relevant. They worked their way up from that tiny studio in Nonhyeon-dong, a bunch of kids in a small country, unknown and with no prospects of being heard, to reach the very heart of global pop culture, and become so many people's focus. Getting to that point will *always* bring love and hate in equal measure.
I take a step back and look at them, and suddenly I see them again, despite the fame, wealth, influence, and endless headlines: 7 normal young people, artists, who just went through years of intense, traumatic experiences, who are finally free, who just want to express themselves and experiment. They've made many albums before this, and I think they'll have plenty more to come, with different sounds and concepts. At this turning point in their career, they're taking steps in untested directions to push themselves and grow through experience, because if they didn't do that now they'd be stuck as an echo of their former selves. And the bravery it takes to do that when millions of eyes are focused on you, millions of people are poised ready to react, millions of people's hopes and prejudices and fantasies are swirling around you... I don't know how to put it into words.
Comeback is so soon it's actually SURREAL... what do you mean there are only a few hours to go???
We waited so long for this, so much has happened, years have passed. And now it's finally all starting again...
I don't really know how to process my emotions, but my main thought is to just breathe, let things happen, and try not to put pressure on the experience. Bangtan is back now, and I believe they'll be with us for a long time, one way or another, so I'm just going to take it one day at a time, and my emotions might take a while to catch up with me.
I've been a fan of BTS for going on 12 years now, I've seen them go through so much, they've been part of my life during so many important moments... and in that time I've seen so many other groups disband, or lose members, or have all kinds of difficult issues, so I'm just thinking about how incredibly lucky we are to have all 7 members together, safe, healthy, best friends, and planning to stay together as long as they can and keep making music. I really couldn't ask for much more 💜
