I've used Wonderfil's thread before, and fell in love. Zero lint. The thread i has used prior was a big box of massive spools, all cotton, and poduced more lint than anything i had ever seen before. I had to clean up lint while piecing blocks. I had no idea that wasn't the norm. The thread had been a gift from my mom, given to me when i first started making quilts.
Then, i received four free spools of Wonderfil. My standards skyrocketed. I discovered what high quality thread is. No lint to speak of. Smooth and strong, no tearing at all. The thread i had been using would tear unexpectedly while sewing. Oh, i fell in love with Wonderfil. Unfortunately, it's expensive. Wildly out of my budget. $10 USD for a 1000 meter spool may not sound like much, but it is on a shoelace budget. 200 meter spools are $3 USD may sound affordable, but 200 meters gets eaten up real quick.
Aurifil is another brand i've tried, and it's same quality and similar pricing. Out of budget, but oh, it is lovely. Zero lint, no tearing, amd the colors are amazing. I received four small spools in one of those quilt boxes. Some fabric and quilt companies make these, and inside the box are all sorts of goodies. I have purchased two of these. One came with two quilt kits (pattern and fabric), a ruler, two templates, four small Aurifil spools, and a candle (tossed out because it smells horrible). The other box had one quilt kit, a template, a needle minder and needle book, a pincushion, and a little book with quick ways to make basic things like HSTs and flying geese.
I use Gütermann thread because it's good enough quality, and much more affordable. No real complaints except for the lint. Not quite as extreme as the cheap stuff, but it's enough to frustrate me...and make me sneeze. You can also find this brand in nearly every quilt, fabric, and craft supply store. Accessible to basically anyone.
Before suggesting polyester, keep in mind i hate the stuff. Plus, millions of people are allergic to it. I have no desire to trigger allergic reactions. Polyester is also plastic, and I want less than nothing to do with that. Cotton is a rare allergy, biodegradable, lasts longer than plastic, and it's more durable. Linen and silk are two threads i would love to play with, just to see if I like them.
My mom's favorite is King Tut Thread, which is $30 USD. The spools are also 2000 yards/1828 meters. That is...so much thread. I've never used this brand, but would love to. She recently sent me Missouri Star thread three packa, 500 yards/457 meters per spool, $27 USD. They also have single spools of 3000 yards/2743 meters for $30 USD. This brand has high praise, but i haven't used them yet.
