ABOUT ( ABRIDGED ) :
FATHER: edgar abbott, former member of parliament. the abbotts are a well-respected political family, one of darkwood’s founding families. their reputation went down the drain when it was revealed that edgar had an affair with a hollywood starlet and fathered her child. he lost reelection right around the time that cyrelle was born and he divorced his well-liked wife. he died from a heart attack in 1995.
MOTHER: sierra ward, american-born actress. she met edgar while shooting a film in london and their affair began shortly after. the news eventually gets out that she’s pregnant, and sierra marries edgar shortly after his divorce. right before he died, edgar increased the payout on his life insurance policy and left everything in his will to sierra. due to the timing & the fact that sierra was forty years his junior, this leads to a lot of conspiracies that sierra played a hand in her husband’s death.
edgar’s ex-wife and everyone else on his side of the family contests the will and tries to take the money sierra inherited. it’s a messy court battle that drags on through most of cyrelle’s childhood, and turns sierra into the town pariah. sierra ends up winning, left with a large sum of money that most people in darkwood don’t think she deserves. as a result, cyrelle is never accepted by the rest of her father’s family. her mother is the only person she has.
the town doesn’t take too kindly to sierra or cyrelle. they view sierra as a tramp, as a black widow, as the woman who ruined an otherwise perfect marriage. they view cyrelle as a mistake that never should have happened, but sierra never explains this properly to cyrelle. so when other children repeat the cruel things their parents say about her and sierra, cyrelle is more confused than hurt. she is forced to learn about her family history through town gossip and tabloid news, because her father’s family has cut her off and sierra never talks about her relationship with edgar.
her mother is good to her, but cyrelle always wishes she was around more. sierra is prone to leaving home for long stretches of time or throwing extravagant parties in their house. cyrelle is defensive of her mother, and as she gets older she stops letting people get away with saying shit. she is not above getting into physical brawls if someone says something about sierra or any of her friends.
cyrelle is good in school despite her tendency to get into fights. she’s an astrophile, spending a lot of late nights in the park with her telescope. she gets accepted at durham university to study astrophysics, with dreams of one day working at UKSA or NASA. really if anyone’s going to try & figure out the science behind why they’ve been sent back in time, it’s cyrelle.
ALCOHOLISM TW does not deal with nina & george’s deaths well, like at all. everyone around her has been left damaged, and cyrelle has never been good at being vulnerable or seeking comfort from others. so she doesn’t have anyone to lean on, and instead becomes reliant on more reckless coping methods. she stops attending uni, gets into fights with strangers, sleeps with anyone willing, drinks more than she should. she hurts lydia, and cuts out the people in her life who are still sticking around. she thinks it’d only be a matter of time before she hurt them, too.
cyrelle does eventually come to the conclusion that she handled things horribly, and that her friends did not deserve to be casualties in the war she waged on herself. she starts therapy, and is trying to get her life back on track. but then, she gets sent back to 2014.
