daily reminder that eating meat is not environmentally sustainable
and that it’s the dead body of someone who did not want to die
Daily reminder that eating meat is actually 100% okay if that is your personal choice and it is NOT OKAY to shame people for making different choices than you. Thanks boo ;*
Okay “boo”, I have to ask… Do you actually believe this or are you typing with your face? Because that seems like a pretty unworkable ethical system…. You can’t shame people for making different choices? What if those choices take away someone else’s choice? If they harm other people? If they’re destroying the world that we all inhabit? Let’s just cut the cutesy faces and actually think through what the conclusions of that principle would be.
But animals don’t have the conscious ability to make decisions for their own self-betterment? Especially domesticated ones, who almost entirely rely on humans for their food, water, shelter, and enrichment? Animals that are intelligent, yes, but still rely majorly on instinct to get themselves through life?
And shaming people for a personal decision to eat meat? We evolved from primate-like creatures, who were omnivorous, yes, but a major component of their diet was raw protein from meat? In the long run a normal diet is cheaper and much more accessible than vegetarian/vegan diets?
AM I MISSING SOMETHING HERE?
Yes you are missing something here. A lot. I’m going to ignore the idea that “normal” diets are more accessible or cheaper, because this has been demonstrated to be utterly false on countless occasions. A quick google search will show you the extent of your error, or you can read one of the hundreds of times I’ve had to dispense with this utterly insulting excuse here. As for what our ancestors did, that too can be completely dismissed out of hand, since that has no relevance to modern ethics whatsoever. Our ancestors practiced incest, infanticide and rape. We evolved from primate-like creatures who threw shit at each other. No one can seriously entertain the notion that we should use their behaviour as a basis for our ethics.
So let’s just consider the main thrust of your argument here, which hinges on the premise that animals are not worthy of moral consideration because they don’t have the conscious ability to make decisions for their own self-betterment, and because they rely on humans for water, shelter and enrichment. Can you honestly not see anything wrong with using the that as our basis for those we treat as morally important? Given the fact that there are millions of humans who fit that exact same criteria, that is. Are you willing to extend that same reasoning to them? Since I’m assuming you’re not going to do that, are you then willing to admit that you won’t do so because this actually isn’t a good way of judging someone’s value and their right to live?
While I see your point and understand where you’re coming from, nothing you ever say will make me change my position. I will continue to eat meat because that is what it is for. Thank you for your input, though.
Aaaand there it is. You guys will come up with these ridiculous excuses for why it’s okay to eat meat, but as soon as they are disproved you’ll straight up admit that nothing will make you change your position because you just don’t care. And that’s what this boils down to. You just don’t give a shit how much harm you’re causing.
When all logic fails, the go-to excuse is, “I’m doing it because I am. It’s always been done this way.” And that is so, so dangerous and neglects all personal responsibility we have to this planet and to the other creatures living with us.
