Czech vocabulary - Time/Čas

rok = the year/ pl. roky měsíc = the month/ měsíce týden = the week/ týdny den = the day/ dny hodina = the hour/ hodiny minuta = the minute/ minuty sekunda/vteřina = the second/ sekundy/vteřiny

Kolik je hodin? = What time is it? Je pět (hodin) = It is five o’clock Je půl čtvrté = It is half past three (lit. is half four) Je čtvrt na dvě = It is a quarter past one Je třičtvrtě na osm = It is a quarter to eight Máš čas? = Do you (singular, informal) have time? Máte čas? = Do you (plural, formal) have time?

New Beginnings

Hello all!  I have decided to make this blog to document my time studying abroad in the Czech Republic.  While I’m not currently there right now, I want to document my journey there as well.  I am going to be studying Czech in Prague in July and August for 6 weeks and then I will go back for the Spring semester of next year, so hopefully I will eventually end up blogging in English and Czech.  It is just now beginning to seem real now that I have officially committed to the program and I don’t know what I am more excited for, the best cheap beer in the world, the magic city of Prague, or seeing my distant family that never immigrated to the United States.  Ever since I visited in 2014, I’ve been itching to get back and now I’ll get to in probably the longest 3 months I will ever endure.  I have so much to do before I get there but I have a feeling that this will be the best time of my life.

Nominations for Czech Film Critics´ Award were revealed today. 

Most of nominations (6) has a tragicomedy The Snake Brothers (Kobry a užovky) directed by Jan Prušinovský, followed by another tragicomedy Home Care (Domácí péče) directed by Slávek Horák (5 nominations) and Petr Zelenka´s sarcastic mockumentary Lost in Munich (Ztraceni v Mnichově) with 3 nominations.

The rest of nominations was divided between two documentaries (Daniel´s World and Mallory), two puppet films (Little From the Fish Shop and Little Man), one big budget fairy tale (Seven Ravens) and two small budget dark comedies (Schmitke and Hungry Tiffany).

Doing work stuff on vacation can be fun. I had to take pictures while in Prague, to put on the Instagram page of the company I work for. These are a couple of my favorites. Such a great idea in Prague, “regular sunday language exchange”.

“How does it work? Everyone who comes, writes down his native language and also languages he would like to practice. According to that tables are set in the restaurant and on each table will be a flag, which represents the language, which will be used at that particular table. People decide on their own, what table they want to sit at, how long they want to stay there and also about the topic they want to talk about at that particular table. There is only one rule – abide the language of the flag on the table. The atmosphere is very relaxed and open to learning. At each table sits at least one native speaker, who helps the others in case, they don’t know how to say correctly, what they want to say. It’s also very interesting and beneficial to just listen to his constructions of sentences, accent and vocabulary.”
