*im talking about fandom takes specifically. not someone being horribly evil about a real-life issue or or blatantly factually incorrect. literally just harmless fandom disagreements or differing interpretations of a text/character/etc.

I cannot really vote on a poll like this, because for me it's heavily context-dependent. Is the take coming from someone I already know or have interacted with before, so there's already an established trust and assurance of good faith? Is it written in a productive and generative manner, or is it just smug posturing that's more geared towards "winning" over an imagined group of opponents? Is it the kind of argument that can potentially be swayed by supplying more details and context from the text, or is it simply a difference of personal preference or philosophy? Am I capable of being measured about it, or is my disagreement based too much in strong personal feelings to make a debate a good idea?

One of the really frustrating things about the state of fandom discourse on here is the tendency to collapse "take you disagree with" into some sort of monolithic category, in a way that I think discourages productive dialogue and encourages polarization. Sometimes it's truly not worth it to engage, but I don't think we're giving people the appropriate tools to really evaluate when that might be.
