Spinraza Update #589
In a little over a week, on August 18th, I will be driving to Philadelphia for my first Spinraza injection! This post is a brief recap of some of the details and considerations surrounding this life-changing event.
-Spinraza is the first-ever FDA-approved treatment for my disease, spinal muscular atrophy.
-SMA causes my muscles to waste away as I get older, leading to the loss of abilities like walking (duh, I never walked), eating, breathing, swallowing, etc., etc., etc. Basically, if a bodily function involves a muscle, SMA affects it.
-Spinraza, which is administered through a spinal injection, is basically fake DNA that tells my body to stop being stupid and start creating the correct proteins for muscle growth and maintenance. It essential stops the progression of my muscle loss, which is more profound than I can currently fathom, and in many recipients, there has even been some reversal of the loss, meaning people are gaining back strength and ability.
-My private insurance approved the drug, which is super expensive (like add a hundred thousand dollars to whatever you’re probably imagining), and Biogen is helping to cover the copay, which they’re doing for many individuals. I will have to get these injections four times in the first 58 days, then once every four months for the rest of my life, which makes the unstable and fluctuating nature of healthcare scary for me. Fingers crossed I can stay covered and approved ad infinitum.
-The actual injection procedure might be a bit hairy. I have a spinal fusion that was done when I was seven to keep my spine straight, so there’s lots of metal and other garbage that might get in the way of the delivery. From what I’ve heard and read, it’s either going to be a long, torturously painful process of digging around for a microscopic entry point, or they’ll nail it on the first try and I won’t feel a thing. I’m hoping for the latter.
-If, next Friday, we find that the spinal injection is just not possible, there are other options of varying seriousness. I’ve seen some are getting it injected into their necks, which sounds lovely. I can also have holes drilled in my spine to make room for the needle, but that method requires a surgery, and that opens a whole new can of complication.
-The only potential side effect that worries me are these nasty migraines that some people are experiencing as a result of the spinal-tap-ish delivery method.
-Even with all these scary uncertainties, I’m ecstatic about the possibility of getting stronger, or at least not getting any worse. It still feels surreal, and I’ll do my best to bring all of you with me through the good and the bad.
In the meantime, Sarah and I are working hard on booking speeches for the fall, as well as a top-secret project that we’ll be announcing next Friday while my spinal cord is being stabbed. Keep an eye out for it!
August is SMA Awareness Month! Please be aware that I, Shane Robert Burcaw, contain boatloads of SMA. I’m chock full of it.
In honor of this special month, I’m doing two things:
1. I’m inviting all of you to ask me anything you want to know about SMA in the comments below. This will be a judgment-free place to ask me whatever you might wonder about living with SMA. Get weird with it.
2. I’ve discounted our bestselling “SMAzing!” shirts on the LAMN web store. Sales from these shirts help people with SMA and similar diseases get vital medical treatment that might otherwise be financially out of reach. Grab one or ten!
With love,
SMA Shane

Thanksgiving Tips for Those With Eating Disorders
I was lucky enough to spend the last holiday season in a residential hospital for eating disorders and being there I picked up a lot of tips and tricks for surviving holiday meals with an eating disorder. These are general tips for all food intake based disorders. Here are some tips from eating disorder specialized doctors that I wrote down and copied here:
Don’t beat yourself up up: Even for people without eating disorders these meals can be challenging. Take your time, remain calm.
Watch your fluid intake: fluids can seriously mess up your hunger cues. Try to avoid caffeine for today and be sure not to drink too much water.
Find out what’s on the menu: ask who ever is cooking what they’re making. Figure out some things that you like. You don’t have to plan everything but it’s nice to go into the meal with some idea of what you options will be so you don’t get overwhelmed.
Eat breakfast: yes I know the typical thanksgiving thing is to starve yourself before the meal but this could ultimately leave to a binge or out of control hunger which can mess with your cues. Even if it’s only a small meal make sure ou have something in your system beforehand.
Match somebody: this only works for some people. if you have a cousin or sibling who is around your age and build and who doesn’t have an eating disorder, mirror their portions.
Make a plate: this will help with stabilizing your potion intake. Make one plate for yourself with the necessary food groups and of course, things you like. A portion probably shouldn’t be too much larger than your fist but it depends on the person obviously and the food.
Watch your pacing: again, if there is somebody at your table who you know is a mindful eater, try and match their pace. Don’t make yourself sick you, nourish your body at a rate that is most comfortable and also appropriate.
Rate your hunger: want another plate? Feel full before finishing your plate? Take a few minutes and rate your hunger on a scale of 1-10, 1 being famished, 10 being on the brink of explosion, and 5 being neutral. If you can’t figure it out wait a little while and try to reassess again.
Take a break: it’s ok to stop eating for a while. Assess your body.
Dessert: dessert can be hard but is amazing. You don’t necessarily have to eat dessert right after your meal. Ask to take some home and have it for your evening snack. Don’t sweat it, dessert is awesome.
Good luck to all of you! Stay safe and be gentle and kind with yourselves.
jumpin on da bandwagon bc there is so little dialogue about violence against sex workers. assaults & deaths are frequently ignored by the authorities due to the nature of our work, and any reports that do go through are greeted with scepticism: “if you didn’t want that to happen to you, you shouldn’t have chosen to do porn/stripping/escorting, you brought this upon yourself.” OUR JOB IS NOT A FORM OF CONSENT. our videos, photos, performances, and clothes are not a form of consent. sex work is one of the oldest industries in the world yet everything that happens inside of it is treated as taboo and dirty. if you don’t have respect for girls in this industry, stop watching porn, stop reading nudie mags, going to strip clubs & brothels, because you do not deserve to consume from us. sex work culture is constantly appropriated by “edgy” celebrities whilst genuine SWs are still being raped & murdered. so fucking disgusting that in 2016, “no” STILL doesn’t mean no. on the day of my assault i was wearing a pair of mom jeans & an XL sweater; I was not fucking asking for it 🖕🏼
Reblogging twice in case you missed the first one
Reading up symptoms for your disorder like
-do that
-do that too
-sorta do that
-do that
-would probably do that if it weren’t for the other disorder
-do that
-wait that isn’t normal?
-do that
*easily has enough symptoms to qualify for a diagnosis*
-wait there’s one more symptom on the list
-I don’t do that
-well obviously I’m faking and I don’t really have it
Anxiety tip
My chest is hurting. I can’t breathe. I feel dizzy. I start breathing faster. My vision gets blurry. I feel like I’m doing to die.. But it doesn’t matter, cos it’s “just” my anxiety.
