The pied avocet is a species of wader in the Recurvirostridae family, the only member of the genus Recurvirostra found in Europe. This characteristic wader of coastal lagoons and marshes is easily recognizable by its long, upturned bill, long legs, and striking black-and-white plumage. Measuring approximately 40 cm in length with a wingspan of about 70 cm, it is a relatively large species that feeds on various invertebrates in water and mudflats, captured using its distinctive bill. It typically nests in colonies of 10 to 70 pairs on islets or dikes near water, laying usually four eggs in a simple, shallow scrape in the sand.

Photograph to my late grandfather, Vasil. On it is written: "Dearest brother, Vasil Çipi, we are worried because you didn't come. We are waiting for you day by day. We await you, come. Dom Luigj, April 2nd, 1993."

My grandfather, while imprisoned for attempting to leave the state at age 17, made close friendships with many Catholic priests and even converted to Catholicism after he had documents on the Orthodox church stolen from him and never returned back to him. One of the many priests he knew was the man in the photograph, Dom Luigj Kçira, arrested only 4 years and two months before my grandfather, on November of 1945. After his release, he came to see my grandfather often in a house he shared with his younger brothers, but would always be escorted outside in fear of further political persecution. From what I know, for the rest of his life he hid his identity and took a vow of celibacy and died peacefully in his home city, Shkodër in 2008.

Father Shtjefën Gjeçovi (born Hilë Gjeçovi) was born on July 12th, 1874 in Janjevë, Vilayet of Prizren, Kosovo. In 1884, he was sent to the college of Troshan in Shkodër, Albania, where received lessons on the path to priesthood. Apart from being a priest, Gjeçovi was also a collector of Albanian folklore-and a folklorist himself, a playwright, an author, a publicist, an archaeologist and a teacher. He was noted for his research work on collecting traditions and lifestyles of northern Albanians and especially for the codification of collections of canonical material, much to the likes of that of The Canon of Lekë Dukagjini, the contents of which were collected over the years by Gjeçovi between 1898-1924. Because he did not stop neither his work as a teacher, even though Yugoslav authorities had ordered the closure of Albanian schools, nor his folklore collecting and archaeological expeditions, he was shot on the hill of Rrezina in the village of Zym, Kosovo on October 14th, 1929. His body was carried by his Franciscan brother, Lorenc Mazreku and a martyr of the homeland, Luigj Paliqi.

Father Lorenc Mazreku was born on March 5th, 1872 in Janjevë, Vilayet of Prizren, Kosovo. Most renowned for his national and religious zeal. After graduating from the college of Troshan, he continued his studies in Bosnia for philosophy and literature alongside Shtjefën Gjeçovi, Anton Nënshati, Jozef Blinishti, Pjetër Gjadri, Ëngjëll Paliqi and Gjergj Fishta. He built churches and lead parishes across Kosovo and Shkodër. He also helped enrich churches by purchasing statues from different dealers. In 1920 he served again as parish priest in Peja, where, in 1942, he founded the Antonian Society for the education of youth. The Germans also found him there when, during World War II, they entered Peja. Thanks to his intercession, during this period two Orthodox Churches were saved from burning: that of the Patriarchate of Peja and the Church of Deçan and, what is more important, the real danger of war between Muslims and Orthodox; between Albanians and Montenegrins and Serbs was averted. Father Lorenc Mazrreku was killed by the Serbs on February 15th, 1943, on the road between Gjakova and Peja, in Prilep.

Father Gjergj Fishta (born Zef Ndoka) was born on October 23rd, 1874 in the village of Fishtë, Region of Zadrima, Lezhë county, Albania. He is regarded as one of the most influential people of the Albanian Renaissance period serving as a Franciscan friar, a poet, a writer, teacher and translator. Fishta was the chairman of the Congress of Manastir, held in North Macedonia from November 14th to November 22nd 1908, which sanctioned the official Albanian alphabet, and he was part of the Albanian delegation to the Versailles Conference in 1919. In 1921, he was a member of the Albanian parliament and eventually became the deputy chairman. Later on, during the 1920s and the 1930s, he was among the most influential cultural and literary figures in Albania. He died on December 30th, 1940.

As it is known, it’s been more than a year since the Central Committee of the Israeli emigrants of Germany and London has tried to install thousands of Israeli emigrants gone from Germany in Albanian land.

It seems that after the last decision given by the national-socialist government in its general meeting in Nuremberg in September of k.v. (?) the project of Albania’s colonization with Israeli elements has now taken a concrete form, meanwhile it’s been two months since we’ve had different questions from circles of the Israeli emigrants from Germany on the possibility of their emigration to Albania as merchants and industrialists, whilst emphasizing every time that for this purpose, the German government allows them to take with them a part of their riches.

So we saw it as reasonable to refer to that honorable ministry on this point, and before we give the interested a definitive answer we wish to know the perspective of our government.

We are entirely against the invasion of the German Israelis, the reason being that the (average) Albanian not having up until today an Israeli place of its own is by nature antisemitic, and does not want the Jew to come and take from his mouth the bite of his bread. It is true that the Israeli brings with him riches and luxury, but his riches are damaging to the place, because history shows us, that that place that undergoes Jewish influence is demoralized and fades with time. So, Albania cannot become the second Palestine for the Israeli element.
