It starts as a song from the POV of Soichiro Yagami, an honest cop (shocking, I know) who thinks police investigators should not sacrifice people in the name of the investigation. Cue in the chorus, where he sings

Then comes in Light, his son, the murderer, and he immediately starts using Soichiro's paternal emotions. To that freak who said that Light sounds like he wants to fuck Soichiro in that verse, I see you and I respect you.

I was thinking today about how Soichiro Yagami manages to still be dramatic as fuck despite being in his late forties/early fifties with a wife two kids and a serious career (this is the man who yeeted himself out of the cardiac ward of a hospital to crash an armoured truck through a plate glass window because lives were at stake and someone needed to do it, let us remember) and how we can extrapolate from this that he was probably even MORE dramatic and heroic and dashing in his twenties, and then I had an idea for a fic I don't think I could write so let me toss it into the wild in case it inspires anyone else:

Death Note time travel fic, but instead of the usual "Light gets sent back from his death to when he got the Death Note", it's "Light gets bodily sent back from his death to thirty years in the past and encounters Soichiro when Soichiro was also an ambitious twentysomething cop with zero brakes". Just. Light (going by an alias of course) getting to know the man he grew up idolising as an equal, Soichiro with no idea who this stranger is but immediately drawn to his apparent moral integrity and dedication to Fixing The World, aaaand all of Soichiro's colleagues on the sidelines going oh gods what do you mean there's two of them now?!

I don't know what the actual plot would be, which is why I probably won't write this myself. TBH I just want to see Light have to deal with all the feelings he'd have about this and see how it would play out. Plus, Soichiro deserves more fic where he gets to be badass.

(And bonus points for a Back to the Future style situation where Light somehow ends up having to be Soichiro's wingman to make sure he gets together with Sachiko, of course. <3)

(Source: Death Note manga chapter 24, Soichiro shortly after escaping from a cardiac ward bed, crashing an armoured truck through a plate glass wall, and holding up a TV studio at gunpoint. And apparently feeling 100% great about his choices.)

I’ll admit, only with age and experience have I come to really understand why Soichiro had to live fully up his own ass until his death. But it’s less to do with “Light is my son,” and more to do with the fact that Soichiro’s validation as a man hinges on being a Good Cop In Service Of His People. As Kira, Light is fundamentally antithetical to that concept, at least in Soichiro’s eyes.

But Light doesn’t think the cops have to be like that. He thinks Kira can work with the world’s institutions, if only they’d give him a chance. It’s the only reason why Soichiro doesn’t drop dead like Raye Penber because Light still thinks there’s a chance A Good Cop can work in his favor bc he himself has a strict moral code.

But we the audience know that Light is just as culpable to drown in his delusions and fear as the rest of us. And deep down, I think Soichiro always knew that. I like to think that Soichiro always knew his son was mentally ill, but like, it’s 2004. Plus, Light was a great actor. It’s what makes him so terrifying. It’s why I think Soichiro can’t allow himself to think Light is Kira because it would prove that your average serial killer isn’t some broke, drug-addicted, porn-brained orphan. It’s also the son of a respected cop, with a family and a home, great at school, but still mentally ill with delusions of grandeur that only developed with access to a weapon.

And Soichiro and his wife made Light. He made a monster, and he can’t accept that because Good Men don’t fail their children like that.

i like when soichiro gets to be a detective… he’s the one who notices all of the yotsuba group’s killings are on fridays and he figures out that demegawa is hiding the real tapes from him. we make fun of him (lightheartedly) for always being desperate to know how much L really suspects light but i think it speaks to his natural inquisitiveness, considering he also is the first member of the task force to ask L further questions about his personal philosophy. in the manga especially i think soichiro genuinely has a good sense for assessing other people - he correctly predicts sayu’s guilt complex and pointedly does not say that light wouldn’t be kira - but paired with this inquisitiveness he is basically always revising his opinions and willing to hear other people out on theirs. it’s just sad that the kira case lands so close to home that all of these instincts, especially by the time the second arc kicks off with his daughter getting kidnapped, tend to get overruled by panic or adrenaline or guilt often enough that they fade into the background altogether.
