Desert Storm ~ 2
Thunderous footsteps rocked the city as I spied them from atop the wall. They were marching slowly, but this time they were not here to negotiate. Arrows lodged in the wall and I ducked as one whistled over my head, taking flight to the unknown reaches behind me. I turned to face Astrid, who was also crouched behind the skimpy wooden defence the recruits had knocked together. We exchanged a nod and drew our bows, each taking an arrow from our quivers and taking aim. The paltry shots did nothing to counter the black-clad brutish men who beat at the palisade with axes, nor did they help much in combatting the swarm of iron-tipped projectiles that blazed above us. Fire arrows? "Abandon the wall!" I yelled to the men, who immediately heeded the call. The heavy troops broke through the rickety structure as Astrid and I hopped onto the roof of the barracks, tiles of an orange hue that slanted downwards at a gentle angle and clacked whenever we took a step. With the rain, they were slippery and we had to tread carefully for fear of slipping off the tall building. I looked back and saw the palisade in flames, and a large burst of energy from our side -most likely from Leo- rocked it, knocking it down upon the heavy legionaries and blocking their path. A victory on our side, but cut short as I saw the Imperial advance on the other side of the barracks. I tapped Astrid's elbow and we exchanged a nod, before sprinting to the other side of the roof and taking aim at the now concentrated stream of Imperials. They flooded the street and took no prisoners, especially not the brutes who had hacked through the palisade with their boarding axes and now did like with the Redguard soldiers. "Gods damn it." I mumbled in a reverent tone. "Are you going to stand there like a prick or do something about it?" Astrid urged, taking aim and striking true in the weak spot where the helmet and pauldron joined, hitting the man in the throat. With that, attention was centred on the roof we crouched upon. "Any more bright ideas?" I questioned as I heard the door of the barracks get kicked in while an arrow whistled above our heads. "A few." She smirked, downing a potion and turning invisible. "Oh, that's not fair." I mumbled, before sprinting across the rooftop towards the quickly advancing Imperial line on my left. More arrows flew towards me but the archers clearly couldn't calculate a leading shot as every one of them flew behind me. I smiled and powered to the point where the two forces met on the long street, jumping from the roof of the barracks to a different roof on the street. Another arrow whizzed from behind and I turned my head to see a squad of Imperials giving chase across the roofs, and they were catching up. I reached onto my back for my sword and gripped the hilt, the steel creating a sharp metallic sound as it left the sheath. A blade thrust beside me as I ran and I rolled to the right, clear of the offensive object and out of sight of the archers below. I quickly realised that I was outnumbered as my boots planted firmly on the tiled roof, backing slowly away from the group of at least ten Penitus Oculatus agents. Leo sprinted back through the streets with her force, the spell had kept the Empire at bay for now but they had still got through the palisade on the other side and she knew the Legion would not wait for them. She just hoped that Borleif and Astrid had safely escaped, but there would be time to find out in due course. I circled the group, who stuck together like wolves in a pack. They all advanced quickly and I jumped back, knowing that it would be a difficult task to break them apart to deal with them separately. One feinted left, then cut down right. I reacted quickly and caught his blade low, inches from my knee. However, these mixed-unit tactics were effective, and two agents shoulder barged me to the ground. The men all presented their swords as they stood over me, not saying a word but rather capturing me. I lay flat on the ground, giving up. I loosened my grip on my blade and it skittered down the slope of the roof and onto the empty street below, since the fighting had moved away, closer to our line. A low hum emanated from behind them, from the direction I came from. A grey mist wrapped itself like tendrils around the ankles of some of the agents, but they did not react. Not until, of course, one of them was snatched quickly and viciously from the circle and turned to a pool of blood which slid down the tiles of the roof. The other men erupted into activity, hacking and slashing at the dense cloud of fog but to no avail, until it swirled and shook the building as it reformed into a slender dark elf wearing a long black frock. The force of the transformation knocked the guards over, incapacitating or killing them. The shockwave rolled over my body and I was left unharmed. "Hello, Jiub." I greeted him as I stood. "This was... Unexpected." "My powers?" He dusted his frock and shrugged. "I was infected with a very powerful strain of Noxiphilic Sanguevoria, it gave me these gifts." "You're...?" "A vampire, yes." His eyes set and stared at me coldly as the New Brotherhood gathered behind him, their black body suits and hoods shining like velvet while their black masks obscured their faces from me. "So these people?" "Sanguinare Vampiris, a common affliction nowadays, but with its merits if tampered with correctly." He nodded to one of the recruits, she immediately jumped to action and dashed across the street and onto the roof of a building across the street in a flash of black energy, and then came back once more to rejoin the Brotherhood's ranks. "Like so." "And what should I make of this? Are you to feed on my army? Turn them into vampires?" "Not unless they wish to. We are the virtuous few, Borleif. Our order is shattered, our numbers few." He strode about in front of the reasonably high number of seemingly lesser vampires. "Trust me, Stormcloak, I was the Speaker in the Dunmeri Dark Brotherhood to hide from-" "Another Dark Brotherhood assassin? I've had it up to here with you people." I reached above my head to indicate my level of annoyance. "Sir, listen to me." Jiub spoke softly, almost unfeeling in the face of danger. "Our order has crumbled: we, the few who sympathise with mortals and aim to protect them, stand to be hunted by our brethren, those who would dine on your flesh and blood for sport or nourishment. Trust us, help us and we will help you." I placed my hand on my chin and scratched the hair that grew there. I turned around and supported the arm that itched my face with my other arm, deep in thought. Vampires? It couldn't be. "Jiub, we have a battle to win. Let's talk about this later."

Desert Storm ~ 1
Rihad, Hammerfell, Two weeks later Rain. It fell in torrents as the Second Rihad Archer Division stood on the city walls, watching the first cohort of the Imperial Legion form lines and bear their square shields towards the wall. I stood with the archers, the young girl to my right and Cyrus somewhere down the line. I recalled images of Markarth as I stood by Ulfric on the wall when he addressed General Tullius. Now, I was Ulfric; I was in charge and I was responsible for these people's lives as they gave the, for their city and took the lives of the Empire for hatred of them. As the cohorts of the Legion formed up into a phalanx formation, a young black-haired head emerged from the small canopy of trees which separated the city from the Brena River, and from Cyrodiil. Tullius. "Birtag Snow-Shod!" He called, eyeing me from his perch beside the phalanx. I screwed my eyes shut and looked back at him. "That's Borleif of Windhelm!" I yelled, allowing my hatred to take over. "You! I remember you from Markarth and from Solitude. It was you who started the Stormcloak rebellion with that heretic Jarl of yours and now you've murdered a senator? Very extreme for someone who used to serve the Empire and her people." I clenched my fist. "Hammerfell stands with us, Tullius. You won't take us this time." I drew my sword and raised it as the archers took aim at the phalanx. Tullius strolled back to the canopy and gave a sarcastic smile. "Have it your way, then." He whistled and the phalanx moved forward as arrows whacked into the shields. I saw Cyrus jump from the wall and onto a ladder, and I followed suit to assist in the defence of the gate. The shields pounded against the threshold as ladders were placed against the walls. They'd outsmarted us. Imperials poured over the turrets and I flew back up the ladder to stem the flow of Imperials. A mace was thrust towards me and I made a full turn on my heel and stabbed forward at the weak point in the armour, piercing his heart. The man dropped as I successfully escaped the deadly attack. I surveyed the scene and saw that the Imperials had already breached the gate and were pouring over the walls. The first line of defence was broken and I had to bark an order. "Fall back! Fall ba-" I was cut off and winded as a strong shoulder battered me in the back and I tumbled down the side of the roof of the house opposite. I thumped to the ground and groaned loudly, and suddenly jerked out of the way as my sword clattered down beside me. My fingers clasped around the handle as I glimpsed the Rihad soldiers retreating against the overwhelming Imperial force. I pushed myself up but lost my footing and crashed down again. A large figure loomed at the end of the alleyway created by the house and the wall, and I pressed my head down in defeat. This was where I died. Leo saw her husband in the alley, dark and soaking. She saw the brute as he raised his axe to end his life. She leapt from the wall and slid down the tiles, landing in a crouch between the two men, just as the axe began to swing. She cried out and outstretched her arms, channelling her Magicka into a spell which halted time. A blue haze settled upon the earth as the axeman's face was contorted into a harrowing snarl. She thought for a moment, and took the axe from his bulky hands, turned it around, stepped away and snapped her fingers to break the spell. The axe hilt came down hard on her husband's back and she quickly drew her sword to kill the unaware brute, slitting his throat. A sharp pain shot up my spine and I groaned, but the axe hadn't buried into me, nor had it seriously injured me. The man had hit me with the hilt of the axe and he now lay dead, Leo standing over me. "What happened?" I grunted as she hauled me to my feet. "I stopped time and saved your ass, actually." She facetiously replied. "Urgh, you could have taken the axe out of his hands, you know?" I felt my back where the hilt made contact. Leo smiled evilly. "I know." She swayed a little and fell, I caught her. "Are you alright? Can you continue?" I asked her as her eyes came back to Nirn. "Yes, yes! I'm fine!" She escaped my grip and ran out of the alley. "Come on! They're holding the plaza!" She jogged away and I painfully followed. The soaked buildings zipped by as we sprinted, and I saw the back of the Legion's second cohort as soon as I saw the plaza. It was taking a beating, but not nearly enough for Rihad's army to stand a chance. It was time to even the odds. I jumped and spun, leaving a deep gash across a man's back. The one next to him whirled in shock and Leo spilled his warm blood across the wet cobbles. A group of crimson-clad Imperials turned around, too many for us to take on alone. They circled us as a significantly weakened phalanx formation still pushed on the city's militia. Leo and I stood back to back as we and the encircling force rotated in different directions, ready to end our lives. "Plan?" She whispered. I sighed deeply. "Fight." I took a reverent tone as I saw my death approaching quickly. I raised my sword and took a deep breath, and my eyes flitted around as arrows lodged into the throats and hearts of all of the men, simultaneously. I jumped out of my skin and looked to the rooftops where Jiub stood, surrounded by black-clad, hooded and masked individuals holding equally black bows. "Jiub!" I yelled up to him. "Where did you come from?" "Sir, the New Brotherhood is at your service!" He called back, and gestured for his archers to make their way back across the roofs, to the gate. Leo and I exchanged a glance, before turning our attention to the Redguard army, which was still badly outnumbered and being pushed past the statue honouring Merric-at-Aswala, the ancient leader of the Fighter's Guild, and towards the first line of barracks. We charged forward, I took the left side and started hacking away at unaware soldiers while Leo spread fire among the people to the right. Their ranks thinned swiftly and the disheartened Rihad detachment suddenly found a burst of confidence at the sight of us, and fought faster, harder. The broken Imperial force eventually turned heel and retreated, sprinting down the wide street as Jiub's New Brotherhood picked them off one by one. Astrid and Cyrus stepped from the crowd of rejoicing Redguard soldiers. "My friends!" Cyrus cried ecstatically. "We are victorious! The day is won!" "I highly doubt that, Cyrus." I explained. "A Legion is far larger than that, they'll have more but I can't say how many." "Borleif." Astrid acknowledged me. "Astrid." I nodded to her. "The men built a wall?" Leo inquired. Sure enough, on the streets each side of the barracks was a tall wooden wall. "They have." Cyrus confirmed, his tone lowering as he realised we weren't done. "I'll send for the rest of our forces." A loud, low pitched horn cut through the humid air and silenced the celebrations. My heart beat faster and suddenly, panic spread through the remainder of the militia. Last was the footsteps. The rhythmic, heavy, clunky footsteps that thundered over the land and mowed down the canopy of trees as hundreds upon hundreds of heavily armed and armoured Imperial troops made their headway towards the gate, followed by around a thousand standard legionnaires and backed by hundreds more archers and sharpshooters. "Shit... Fall back! Fall back behind the wall!" I barked towards the hysterical and ragged band of soldiers, who pushed and shoved between themselves but got no closer to completing their orders. "Are you fucking deaf? I said behind the wall, now!" This order seemed to get through to them this time as they hastily filed behind the towers. I turned back towards Cyrus. "I need you to send for every possible fighter we have on our side, the King's included. You two, with me." We joined the rest of the army behind the barricade. ****************************************************************************************************************
Spark of War
Rihad, Hammerfell, 4E 181 "Borleif, you've barely spoken to me this past week." It was a week since Cyrus had entered Leo's room that night, and Astrid hadn't spoken to me since then either. Two weeks until the Legion arrived. "Hmm." I studied my book and half looked at her, uninterested in what she had to say. She huffed and turned away, tired of trying to get through to me. Suddenly, she snapped her head back to me and raised her voice. "Talk to me!" She screeched. "Say something! I'm sick to fucking death of this attitude, where did it even come from?" She was red in the face and her hands were shaking. I looked up from my bed and into her bloodshot, watering eyes. "You know exactly what happened, Leo." I droned calmly. "No! I don't! You just upped and started ignoring me without so much as a word!" Her lip quivered and a tear rolled down her cheek, a tear that she quickly wiped away. "I know what happened, you and Cyrus were always friendly towards each other, and now I see why." "Cyrus? Fucking Cyrus!? What the hell gave you that idea?" "Maybe when I heard him walk into your room in the dead of night?" I maintained my composure despite the anger I felt surge inside. Leo was silent for a moment, looked down into her lap. Light from the torched danced on her cheeks and hair, bouncing from the many bookcases in the room and illuminating the many hundreds of books housed inside them. The stone floor was bare and dry, providing a boring façade to the great knowledge one could ascertain within the walls. "Borleif." Her voice was full of not sorrow, but anger. "Borleif, you prick. What kind of assumption is that? I'll have you know that the maid came to see me that night, Cyrus was asleep!" I looked towards her in panic, realising the error of my ways. "Leo..." My eyes widened as she stood to leave. She slapped me across the face and kicked the door open, meeting Cyrus as she left. "Leo! What's going on?" He queried, clearly concerned by the commotion. "I'll tell you what's going on here, Cyrus: according to Borleif, you came into my room in the middle of the night and fucked me!" She turned heel and strode away as Cyrus gazed over to me in shock and horror. "Borleif? How could you think such a thing? After all I did?" He didn't seem angry or upset, only disappointed and slightly betrayed by someone he called friend. I gave him a sorrowful look briefly, before casting my eyes down again in shame. "Cyrus, I'm so sorry..." "I don't need your apology. We have a battle to fight, we have two weeks. I suggest we get ready to fight it." He turned his back and stopped in the doorway, looked over his shoulder. "And to think, we were friends." He strode away. I trained with the recruits all day, and when Leo returned with Cyrus, the pair ignored me. Astrid came later, and directed a throwing knife between my legs. I felt awful, I'd let down two of the people I'd trusted most, and fallen out of favour with an ally. The battle couldn't come soon enough, and I couldn't wait to be away from this infernal city. Blacklight "No!" Aspen yelled, his sword flying from his hand and clattering across the ground. He pulled a knife from his bandolier and ducked under a swinging axe. Arvsori shot forward and gutted an Argonian, then parried an mace swing and kicked the lizard in the chest. She saw Aspen being harassed by the big man and dashed for him, shoving her shoulder into his back as he was about to land a fatal strike on her friend. The brute stumbled and roared, charging for Arvsori who propelled herself upwards and kicked him in the head, flipping and landing behind him. He shook his head and snarled, circling Arvsori while Aspen lay on the ground, injured. The brute smashed forward with the hilt of his axe but Arvsori caught it with the flat of her blade and gripped the handle with both hands, pushing against his might. She knew she couldn't overpower him, but Ashrune could. She twisted the iron in her hands and tapped the crossguard with her index finger, setting the wooden hilt of the axe alight and causing the brute to drop it and scream in an awful low pitched drone. Arvsori saw the opportunity and twisted, slitting his throat and freezing it at the same time. He choked and gurgled as the crystals of magical water turned from their pristine white to a soggy red and eventually black. He fell backwards and hit the ground with a thud, sending an echo around the abandoned warehouse. Arvsori outstretched a hand to the fallen professional, who took it and flinched as she pulled him to his feet. "Thanks for the save, sister." He grumbled. "How many does that make?" "Seven." She replied, giving him a smug smile before flipping down her visor and picked up his sword, Champion. A beautiful weapon, it was salvaged from a Dwemer ruin and reforged to provide a nimbler stroke while still retaining force. Aspen chose not to enchant his weapon, and instead relied on various poisons and blade oils to serve that purpose for him. She handed it back to him and made for the door. "Where are you going?" He called after her. "The contract's over, I'm going home." She glanced back at him, puzzled behind her mask. "Don't you remember the reason I gave you for taking this contract? Why these people were here at all?" "They were An-Xileel sleeper agents, in the warehouse guarding a special artefact- Aspen, no." She quickly crossed back over to him and stared him in his still exposed eyes. "Arvsori, I need this score, we have to find it." "This is against the guild's rules and we'll be-" "Fuck the guild's rules!" He spat, glaring at her chitinous helmet. "This is the most important thing I've ever asked you to do for me. Please." Arvsori saw the silent pain in his eyes and looked down at her feet for a moment, before looking back up to him and shrugging her shoulders. "Fine, but if you get caught, on your head be it." "Thank you." Aspen shut his eyes and breathed in deeply. "Come on, it has to be around here somewhere."

The Pain of Knowledge ~ 2
**************************************************************************************************************** Later that day, propaganda began to appear around the city. Leo and Cyrus were clearly working hard on design and distribution, even though Leo hated the idea of being cooped up in a room for days on end. At around five o'clock, she appeared in the courtyard with Cyrus in tow. "Afternoon, big guy." She smiled at me, we shared a kiss. Cyrus recoiled and looked away quickly. "Please, my friends, some other time." He pleaded. Leo looked back at him, smirked, and kissed me again, for longer this time. "For the love of Mara, please!" "Ironic, Cyrus." I laughed and rested a hand on Leo's shoulder as I spoke to them. "Productive day? Judging by the look of the city, it seems so." "Non-stop, we sent some of Astrid's recruits to plaster the designs all over the city and we managed to get a magistrate to give a speech on one of the main squares tomorrow." Leo explained, clearly excited at their progress. "Fantastic." I nodded at Cyrus as a gesture of appreciation. "I have a lot of promising combatants, hopefully I won't have to teach everyone myself for much longer." "Gods, you were doing that?" Leo looked concerned as she noticed the bags under my eyes. "Brings me back to the war." I shrugged and changed the subject. "Cyrus, we've been given an underused wing of the castle for our own use, the soldiers get the barracks and we get the proper quarters to ourselves. There's a room for you if you want it...?" Cyrus' eyes lit up with joy at the thought of not having to sleep in his wretched abode. "You're sure?" "Positive." "My friend, I cannot thank you enough." He walked over to me and shook my hand, grinning. "Anything for a friend." I smiled warmly in return, our eyes locked and a moment of mutual appreciation was shared. "Alright, lovebirds. Let's head inside." Leo cut in, sauntering towards the old fort. One o'clock in the morning by my estimates, and I couldn't sleep. My mind raced with thoughts of Leo in a small room with Cyrus all of this time. I was an idiot, I was an idiot, I was an idiot. I didn't trust my own wife? She wasn't in the room with me, she had her own separate bed chambers for the time being so I was left to my own thoughts. A thin sliver ray of brilliant moonlight filtered in through the window and highlighted a section of my door. Unfaithful, unfaithful, unfaithful, no! She was my wife, we had been married for five years and neither of us had ever even thought about it. Maybe she had. Maybe she hadn't. Maybe I had. Maybe I hadn't. NO! My ears pricked up as I heard the creak of a door and quiet footsteps rang out across the silent castle. Footsteps heading towards Leo's chamber... Cyrus' footsteps. I buried my head in my pillow and clenched my eyes shut, willed my body to collapse, to cease the pain I felt. "Get up, you pathetic oaf." Astrid stood over me and I shot from one end of the bed to the other in shock. "Gods! Astrid? What are you doing here?" "I'm here to tell you that you're being melodramatic, and you need to rest. I can practically feel your panic from across the castle." "Oh fuck off, Astrid. This is nothing to do with you." "You might want to shut that trap before I shut it for you." "Try it, but make sure you have a healer ready and waiting." "I should kill you, Stormcloak!" "Then do it, assassin!" A servant let herself in and looked at us both. "I've been ordered to send Miss Astrid back to her quarters." She mumbled, drowsily. "I was just leaving." Astrid asserted, and left. I rolled back over and closed my eyes, blotting out the emotions that made me so weak. Leo was an afterthought, we had a battle to win, and dwelling on romantic issues wouldn't help our survival. Next morning, I met Leo at the door of the castle. She was leaving to attend the magistrate's speech. She smiled warmly at me and squeezed my hand, but her smile dropped when she saw my expression. "What's wrong, Bor'?" She questioned, concerned. I didn't reply, I stared blankly ahead and walked out of the door ahead of her. I left her there, as I solemnly greeted the recruits as they trickled through the gates.
