The whumpee casually referencing torture and abuse. When the caregiver goes sets down a plate of food, the whumpee off-handedly mentions how they were only allowed to eat once a day. It takes the caregiver a few weeks to notice that the whumpee never uses hot water when they’re by themselves, because they’re “not allowed.” The caregiver is horrified as more details come to light, crying themselves to sleep because they don’t know how to make it better.

The details are small at first. The way Jules casually speaks them, as though discussing a trip to the store to get milk, is offhanded, as though he doesn’t recognize it as something out of the ordinary. The first time it happens, Will is taken aback because Jules has only choked out the bare bone details of what happened at night in between strangled sobs as he struggled to free himself from the night terrors. 

“He put hot sauce in my eyes once.” 

Will stills from where he’s forking fajitas onto his plate and feels the blood drain from his face as he turns slowly to find Jules thoughtfully watching hot sauce drip from the bottle and onto his food. The thing that takes Will most aback is that he doesn’t seem upset in the least despite the sympathetic tears pricking the back of Will’s eyes. He could have mentioned that he said hello to the neighbor this morning for all his body language was giving away. 

“He was doing an experiment to see if I’d go blind. I’m glad I didn’t.”

Jules doesn’t notice Will’s horrified expression so he turns back to the stove, putting back the forkful as he suddenly finds his stomach far too tight to even consider food.

They come gradually. Each one makes Will’s skin feel too tight. It wasn’t as though Jules was utterly unaffected save for these outbursts. He screamed his way through nightmares and cried and shook when seemingly small things upset him. That was expected though. The thoughtless way these facts spilled from him was almost worse than what was being said. As though they were nothing. As though the torture he’d endured and survived was nothing. 

They’re watching TV, an innocent show about raising puppies, when the next comes. 

“I had a collar like that sometimes but the spikes were on the inside. Yeah, like that.” Jules nods agreeably as a choke collar, a horrible metal thing with long, dull spikes meant to penetrate a dog’s thick fur and press into their neck to encourage obedience, is demonstrated on screen. 

Jules must have felt his arms tense around him because he looks up and asks, “Everything alright?” 

“Yeah… Yeah, sorry sweetheart. I was just thinking I’d go make some popcorn.” 

“That sounds great.” Jules smiles up at him trustingly as Will stands, making his stomach lurch as he zeroes in with new focus on the pinprick dots circling his darling boy’s neck. 

Will all but throws the popcorn in the microwave and sinks to the cold tile, head between his knees. Jules. His beloved, gentle Julian. Wearing a choke collar. 

If Jules notices that the microwave beeped well past its standard allowance, he doesn’t mention it. Will handed off the full bowl to Jules as he sat back down and resumed his former position, wrapping back around his boyfriend and tightening his embrace, willing away the scars that seemed to glow around his neck. Will heard little more than a lulling buzz from the narrator on the show as his thoughts dwelled on his boy. 

Will’s stomach rolled as Jules leaned away to set the empty bowl on the coffee table, having singlehandedly wolfed down the entire bag even before the next commercial break. What once might have been a negligable bit of hunger leftover after dinner now only served to remind Will that, “I learned how to eat fast since I didn’t know if it’d be taken from me.”

It all crescendoed into catastrophe about a week later when Jules sat gingerly, wincing as he settled into bed. Ever watchful, Will’s brow furrowed in concern as he hurried around the bed, gently asking, “Are you alright?”

“Yeah, I can do it.” Jules reassured, waving away Will’s offered hand as he slowly picked up his legs one by one to maneuver and lay on the bed. “My hip hurts when I’m cold; it never really healed. I think maybe the break would have been alright but not after I hung on it.” 

Will’s heart stopped. “Hung?”

“Yeah.” Jules winced as he pulled his other leg up but the momentary pain seemed to pass, leaving him drowsy and peaceful as he readied for bed. “I’d been bad… Doctor Bowen broke my leg- or maybe my hip I’m not sure which- but he hung me from it to test…” Jules squeezed his eyes shut, trying to recall. “I don’t really remember anything after that, I’m sorry.”

“That’s alright, sweetheart.” Will said faintly, suddenly overcome with lightheadedness. “I’m just gonna finish up in the bathroom and then I’ll come to bed.” Will’s stomach lurched at Jules’ sweet smile and he forced himself to walk calmly to the bathroom and shut the door before throwing on the tap at full capacity just as his vision blurred and he heaved his stomach contents into the toilet. 

The moment he finished, Will pressed his forearm tightly against his mouth, biting down and forcing away the scream that threatened to crawl up his throat. He lurched to the side, leaning against the cabinet as the initial abject horror began to pass and he threw his hand up without looking to flush. 

He realized tears were streaming down his face as he struggled to catch his breath, suddenly feeling as though he’d run for miles as imaged of Jules, screaming, unconscious, sobbing Jules strung up by a broken leg flew through his mind. His dark brown curls that Will took so much comfort from carding his fingers through hanging limply from his head as his face turned red with exertion and blood, begging to be let down. Unconscious and too still. Screaming. Just screaming, able to do nothing more. 

Will sobbed into his hand, muffling the noise. He couldn’t fall apart, not when Jules was right there somehow asleep after revealing the information that was shattering Will. He couldn’t fall apart when he wasn’t the one who lived it. 

Worse. He was the cause. He’d introduced him to Doctor Bowen after all.

So! I was kinda bored lately, so I decided to make my own palette challenge. I wanted to have it WoY temed, so I used the wonderful backgrounds from the intro as inspiration for the various palettes.

You knew she was following you again, she always did when you entered her forest. Silently she would linger just out of sight, never interacting, but always watching. You’d lost count of how long she’d been doing it now.

Normal people would have been justifiably terrified by this, especially given what was known of this forest in particular, and the creatures that roamed it. But you? you had always been just as fascinated by her, as she was by you. It seemed perfectly normal to start leaving behind small gifts for her after a while, and thankfully she seemed to enjoy them, as you soon began to come across gifts that she had left in return, happily accepting them with a smile.

Still, despite the years that had passed, you’d never pushed things further than that….Not until today at least.

Humming quietly to yourself, you laid out the large picnic blanket beside you, carefully unpacking everything inside your basket, a mix of both her favourites and your own. You could feel her curiosity as she subtly lingered closer, vaguely visible behind a tree in the very corner of your eye. 

You knew better than to try and look, focusing instead on finishing setting everything up, before you finally spoke up.

“Will you join me today?”

You called out softly, calmly settling yourself down on the picnic blanket, even as the forest seemed to grow silent in shock around you, even the breeze seeming to hold its breath for a moment. Patiently, you focused on opening the pre-made treats up, giving her time to think and decide.

A large part of you expected her to turn down your offer, something you were prepared to accept graciously. As such, it was no surprise that your heart started to pound the moment you heard the gentle rustling of her approach.

With a racing heart, you focused on the treats as she slowly sat down beside you, the scent of the forest somehow seeming so much stronger now, her body so close that you could feel her warmth. It was only once she had settled completely, that you lifted your gaze to meet hers for the first time, heart skipping a beat at the otherworldly eyes that stared back at you.

For a moment you sat there and simply took in the sight of each other, her powerful gaze slowly roaming over the features she had already come to memorise so well, seeing them up close for the first time. You’d caught faint glimpses of her out of the corner of your eyes for years now, but seeing her up close was a new experience entirely, one that only emphasised her inhuman nature all the more.

She almost appeared as though she had cloaked herself in nature itself, her long black dress slowly turning into trails of moss dotted with small wild flowers, towards the ends, bark and vines adorning her body as though they were the finest of jewels. It was her horns however, which truly caught your attention. 

Arching up high above her, they curved to mimic the twisted and gnarled branches of a dark tree, small blooms growing amongst their slightly shifting branches, where a small shimmering spider had made its home, its web perpetually dotted with small dew drops. Though the spider moved, you had the distinct feeling that it was a part of her, just as the gown that cloaked her skin was. 

You were breathless by the time that your eyes met her own again, and without hesitation, you spoke your thoughts honestly.

“You’re beautiful.”

Much to your delight, you were graced with the sight of her own flushed cheeks, flowers blooming more fruitfully in response to your flattery. To provide both of you a moment to recover from your sudden bashfulness, you held out the lovingly crafted box of treats, willing your heart to finally calm it’s rapid beats.

This picnic was going to be the death of you at this rate.

Your boyfriends always had something about him that was different, something that set him apart from those around him. Many people seem to fear him, staying out of his way and trying not to piss him off, but you were drawn to him the moment you met him. It was rather cute watching a man like him trip over himself to get your attentions. 

Often times people ask you how you can be with someone so dangerous and aggressive, but hes never been anything other than loving and affectionate with you. You can never seem to figure out why he’s so scary to everyone. 

One evening, whilst home alone, a group of strangers break in. They’ve just dragged you from the bed when suddenly they get ripped away from you, the sound of breaking bones and choked gurgles echoing in the air. As you fumble with the light and finally switch it on, you find -much to your shock- your boyfriend, holding up the ring leader by the throat. The broken bodies of the other assailants, lay sprawled in a gruesome fashion around the room. He turns his head to you, giving you a sheepish fanged grin, his eyes pitch black and blood splattered across his cheek.

“I can explain love.”
