uh oh

"etymologynerd" is at it again and this time i do feel i have to say something. the disability advocates have it covered on addressing the impact, but there's also a serious problem with the linguistics.

in a video shared on may 16, adam aleksic begins by saying: "i think we have to accept the fact that the 'r-word' [retard/retarded] is permanently coming back and it's functionally changed meanings to no longer directly refer to disabled people."

this first sentence alone betrays a fundamental misunderstanding of language change in several points.

this word never went away. what we're seeing now is an attempt at re-normalization by people who sense that they will not be socially punished by openly using this term.

we actually don't have to "accept" its return to mainstream use. for decades, disability advocates have worked to inform the public of the harm caused by casual use of this term. the harm has not disappeared, and neither will this advocacy and its impacts.

now i'm just mad. how tf does it NOT refer to disabled people? the entire point of a pejorative term is that it negatively invokes comparison to a person, group, etc. the assertion that the r-word has changed meanings is categorically false. at most, its primary context has changed from clinical to casually pejorative, but the insult fundamentally rests upon the original reference.

he goes on to refer to the "euphemism treadmill," another concept he misrepresents by extending the metaphor to say that terms which have been sufficiently distanced from their original reference are no longer pejorative. to quote: "...once we sufficiently distance a word from its historical usage, it stops taking on the same offensive power and just becomes colloquial instead."

which... what? what the fuck is he talking about? the words he uses as examples – idiot, imbecile, and moron – are definitely still offensive, if perhaps less impactful. "just becomes colloquial instead" is a nonsense phrase. are offensive words not colloquial? the only english word that comes to mind as having changed so much in definition as to no longer be offensive is "nice," which has been shifting in meaning for more than 700 years and was never a weaponized clinical term.

he ends by saying, "it is undeniably true that the people who are afraid to say the r-word right now are going to get old and die out, while younger generations keep saying it with no knowledge of where it came from." again, fundamentally misunderstanding language change in society over time. it rests on the assumption that we're all going to start or re-start using this slur and never have a conversation about its harms, which just completely ignores both the abovementioned disability advocacy and the fact that people tell each other not to use offensive words. you think i'm just not gonna teach my kids that using slurs is bad??

the whole video is devoid of both empathy and an understanding of long-term semantic change.

tl;dr etymologynerd is wrong, we do NOT "have to accept that the 'r-word' is coming back," and we all need to read more crip linguistics.

I know and understand why a lot of allos don't get how big a deal it is to some of us that Ryland Grace is aroace coded, cause it doesn't seem as big as being gay or trans coded. but like. it's a huge fuckin win for us to have a wildly successful, fabulously done movie star a very aromantic asexual coded character. we don't get rep like that. at best, sometimes good shows have aspec characters, but they're like robotic and weird (usually bc only autistic coded characters get ace coded, and often poorly). but yes!! aroace, queerplatonic, (agender,) and autistic coded characters!! in a big-fuckin-deal movie!! it's so cool!!

it's in the book too, which is awesome by itself, but movies often get muuuuch more recognition than novels.

It makes me so happy to see how many people love aroace Ryland Grace. I don’t think I have seen an aroace coded character I have related to quite as much as him.

One thing I wish they kept in the movie was the way they bred the taumoeba.

Don’t get me wrong, I love love love Grace having to wait for Rocky to wake up, and the uncertainty on whether or not he would. I get that they had to gloss over stuff, I do.

But there’s something so visceral about how devastated they were when they learned nitrogen killed the taumoeba, and their diligent work to slowly breed the right resistance into them. It was both of them working together in their peak Grace-and-Rocky way.

The movie feels like maybe if Rocky was awake, it wouldn’t have happened. The book assures you of the fact it happened anyways.

anakin's not allowed to divulge the future so he keeps waxing poetic about his mysterious Master (as wise as master yoda, as powerful as master windu) while obi-wan Seethes

anakin starts trying to reconnect with ♡his friend♡ senator palpatine except the official story is he's fresh out of deep cover as a spy and palpatine is sweating bullets because They're Onto Us

anakin is deeply depressed that padmé is now, like, 3. he periodically makes cryptic (but highly suspicious) remarks about how marriage is an exercise in heartbreak and futility. and paperwork. obi-wan becomes obsessed with figuring out who anakin married. (his old master? senator palpatine??)

dooku hasn't left the order & anakin must endure friendly sparring sessions with the guy who cut off his arm. he's the only councilmember anakin categorically refuses to refer to as "master" for reasons neither of them will divulge. obi-wan adds him to the list of marriage suspects

qui-gon does not understand why this young jedi (and his nasty little padawan) keeps interacting with him as if they have some sort of connection. anakin feels deeply guilty for depriving him of the galaxy's best padawan/jedi/man & keeps contriving ways to foist obi-wan on qui-gon (to their mutual displeasure). obi-wan adds qui-gon to his list of marriage suspects

anakin teaches with a WWOD philosophy. at first obi-wan is just glad to have a master he's so in tune with. eventually it starts to feel a little uncanny; anakin even seems to pluck phrases from his thoughts before he can say them. obi-wan becomes genuinely concerned that anakin is reading his mind.

obi-wan cracks it when anakin stops him from eating hoi-broth because he's allergic. (obi-wan has never had hoi-broth.)

featuring: obi-wan being a spoiled brat, treating anakin as his chauffeur/repairman, and just generally having a great time with a master who thinks he's smart and funny and hung the stars. anakin never tells anyone about qui-gon's chosen one theory, and he finds he fits in much better without the baggage of those expectations. he also finally gets a break to work on that c-ptsd. he builds a mechnoarm that isn't customized for killing people. dooku goes deep undercover as the count of serenno to lure the sith out of hiding. it's a major mindfuck for anakin when it turns out to be palpatine. meanwhile obi-wan is insufferable. "see? i told you there was something wrong with him. you never listen to me."

Also, episodes tend to happen over several days’ time, so if you’re looking for an EXACT date for a little scene in an ep, I mostly don’t have it for you, but you should put it within the week I’ve given, relative to where it went in the ep. Also re: s4. COVID does not work as a good timeline indicator for this show, AT ALL. Its sort of like the whole “do they have regular shifts” debate - the writers wrote the stories they wanted to tell, and then fit COVID in around that. Also it got really screwed by them being done filming before it hit, but not having aired any of s3B yet. And then both bc COVID can’t be used to figure out time, and also bc it wasn’t aired normally, it is a lot more nebulous timeline-wise, I did my best though 😂
