Rin bit his lip, wanting to agree with his half-brother but unsure of whether that would bring consequences. Even though the Exorcists below couldn’t hear him, they were still right below them, and what if this was some sort of test? “I did some horrible things. I’m lucky they didn’t just decide to execute me.”

He was a little bit annoyed that the other demon totally ignored his question. Rin had gone to the trouble of stating his name, why couldn’t whichever King this was? Was he offended that Rin didn’t recognize him right away? Whatever the case, the appearance of the Greenman had given Rin a good hint. They were members of the Earth Kingdom, which meant… “You must be the Earth King!” Rin announced proudly. “Amaimon, that’s your name. Right?”

His proud expression faded into something more neutral when the subject of glamours was brought up. Rin began to fidget, suddenly aware of the odd disconnect between his apparently human fingers and how they still felt like claws underneath the illusion. “Because I was born with a body of my own instead of having to possess a human one, I’m pretty much in my full demon form all the time,” he explained, fiddling with a lock of navy hair. “I’m fine with it, b-but humans think it’s threatening, so I wear a glamour to look more… how we both look like now, I guess.” Full demons often had shapeshifting abilities and could appear human due to the nature of their hosts, so it only made sense that they wouldn’t know much about glamours. They were a last resort, used by half-demons like Rin who had blood too powerful to fit into human society and no shapeshifting ability to speak of.

"Very good, little brother." Amaimon nearly mumbled as he watched Rin's mood shift yet again, wondering how it was so easy for him to drop from that elated high in mere seconds. "Humans are afraid of anything they can't understand. Exorcists are no different. They would rather shoot to kill than negotiate." As he spoke, the Demon King carefully took the Greenman from its perch, lightly tossing the small creature back to the branch above. "They don't have a shred of sympathy for anything that isn't their own kind." After a quick glance to the Exorcists below, Amaimon raised himself quietly from his branch and settled again slowly on the one Rin currently occupied. He was mindful enough to keep his distance, briefly recalling the way the navy haired youth had reacted to his presence earlier. "Someone like you shouldn't have to hide themselves."

The Demon King had clearly heard about Rin, and knew enough to recognize him… but not his name, apparently. “I’m Rin,” he offered gently. Rin took a seat on one of the sturdier branches with a small sigh, running a hand through messy navy locks. “Even with the glamour, I guess it’s kind of obvious who and what I am, isn’t it…” He could make his ears and fangs appear shorter, and make his claws look like human fingernails, but his eyes remained the same— a nearly fluorescent blue, with slit pupils that glinted red in the right light.

“Which Demon King are you? If you don’t mind me asking,” Rin added quickly, flushing. “I’ve only ever met Samael-sama before, so…” He felt like he should be able to guess based on appearances, but he also knew assumptions weren’t always right.

His lips pressed into a thin line as he looked away. Rin knew all too well that guilt and self-sacrifice were concepts full demons couldn’t typically understand, so how could he possibly explain his decision to his half-brother? “I… I tried to protect my family,” he admitted, hands curling into fists. “Multiple times. The first time is what made the Order capture me. The second time is when I told them I would fight for them, so that my family would be safe and together.”

"Sounds like the Exorcists are acting more like demons than you are." Amaimon replied with a quiet snort, head tilting once again as the boyー No. Rin. ーseemingly had a shift in mood. Protecting family he could understand, but fighting for the Exorcists? This was a concept the Demon King could not grasp, even if their older brother had been doing the same for the past two hundred years. Bringing his teeth down hard on the candy in his mouth, the sweet cracked into pieces he could chew at his leisure while he turned his attention to the branch above. Why give the other a straight answer to his identity when he could make a guessing game of it instead? A tap of his nails against bark brought the hiding Greenman down to rest beside him, Amaimon gingerly prodding at the flower atop the tiny demon's head. "You would be surprised how many demons hide among the humans, yet no one seems to notice. You don't stand out as much as you think." Amaimon spoke as the little green demon quickly made its way to the point of his hair, gaze shifting back to Rin as his small brows furrowed. "Glamour? What is that?"

Rin looked equal parts confused and uncomfortable at this realization. “…I do?” He supposed it only made sense, considering his flames contributed significantly to his scent… but it made him wonder about other ways he unknowingly took after his father.

“Y-You’re a Demon King,” he said, doing his best to put a bit more distance between himself and the King. It wasn’t hard to tell that he was a Demon King, but Rin wasn’t entirely sure which one he was. From what little he knew of his half-siblings, he could be too lazy to do much harm— or he could be incredibly violent and destructive. “Does Samael know that you’re here?”

He wasn’t sure what he would do if the answer was ‘yes’, but it couldn’t hurt to ask.

Amaimon’s small brows raised slightly as the younger demon backed away from him, falling back into their normal, unimpressed position at the mention of the Time King.

“Here in Assiah?” he questioned, fingers disappearing into his inner breast pocket momentarily before returning with a small, foil wrapped piece of candy. As he pulled at the wrapper’s ends, he contemplated what exactly he should say to the other that would earn him the least amount of reprimand from his older brother.

“He brought me here to meet you, uhh... Hmm...” Popping the small sweet into his mouth, he realized he hadn’t actually paid that much attention when Mephisto had spoken of their youngest brother. He wondered if he was even talking to the right person. “Why are you running around with Exorcists, anyway?”

The most frustrating thing about ‘shadowing’ Exorcists that didn’t know him was that they somehow managed to over- and underestimate him at the same time. They were terrified of his abilities, and yet were somehow also under the impression that he didn’t know how to use them despite having the blue flames since birth; they knew he could sense things they couldn’t, but dismissed his worries about something feeling ‘off’ as mission jitters. They’d even ignored everything he said about navigating the forest they were currently in— which was hilariously frustrating, because he’d spent most of his life living in a forest.

He would have felt vindicated when they got lost, if it weren’t for the knot of dread currently settling in his gut. There was something— or someone —powerful in this forest, much more powerful than Rin or any of the Exorcists he was supposed to be shadowing. 

Rin at least managed to convince the Exorcists to let him climb up a tree to get a sense of their location. Scaling the tallest tree he could find was something comforting and familiar, and by the time he was halfway up he’d nearly forgotted what he was so worried about… until he came face to face with another humanoid demon.

“Oh no,” he whispered, pale as whitewash.

Once again, Mephisto had grown tired of Amaimon’s constant requests to play, the elder claiming he was buried in too much work to grant the Earth King’s wish. With an insincere apology, the older demon had sent him on his way, almost literally kicking Amaimon from his office window in hopes the younger would find someone else to annoy.

Instead, Amaimon had found himself perched on one of the many branches high in the forest, eyes scanning the varied amounts of Exorcists that ran by every so often. One small group in particular caught his interest; he could sense something familiar, though he couldn’t quite put his finger on it.

Amaimon’s head tilted as the youngest in the group began to separate from the others a moment later, watching as the dark haired boy climbed closer and closer to him. By the time the younger had met him face to face, Amaimon had figured out what exactly it was that felt oh so familiar.

“You smell like Father.” he stated flatly, bored gaze morphing into curiosity as it locked with the boy’s.

Amaimon’s eyes narrowed the moment the girl dared to turn her gaze away, arm raising to allow nimble fingers a grip on the branch he was hanging from as he slowly lowered himself to the ground. Was she ignoring him?

“I asked you a question.” the demon stated around the cherry flavored sucker in his mouth, teeth cracking the hard candy as he awaited her answer. Surely his Japanese wasn’t that bad.
